Wow, now when I have a spare $30 I’ll buy one to wear (I wasn’t sure about a headcovering b/c all the ones I’ve seen are ornate and lacey - which I felt was opposite of all that is stated in the Bible due to their ornateness - if that is even a word). I have been wanting to wear a head covering but the only thing I’ve found to be modest in the past is a hijab (isn’t that what Muslim women wear?) Now, with this sight I can buy a headcovering that isn’t black or isn’t white/ivory (both colors around my facemake me look sick). Thank you for posting this site.👍
 
Consignment,thrift and vintage clothing stores often have mantillas, lovely scarves and occasionally hats if one does not have 30.00 to spend.
I have many pretty scarves bought for no more than $6.00 to as little as .25. If you like the ties shown on Devorah’s Headcovering that can be added to scarves. How to tie the scarves (tieschels) sites are available too.

Today I had a large square silk scarf (still waiting for my delivery from Devorah) folded into a triangle. I pulled it under the back of my hair, crossed the ends, then up over the top of the scarf with my pony tail sandwiched inside, and tied it once. Just as the tiechel in the photos. It stayed all through Mass, and was really very comfortable! I think another fabric other than the silk though would stay better on the front of my hair, this one wanted to let my bangs slip out. But I’m happy with how I tied it - so now I know I have options! 🙂

After reading the recent threads about head covering, I got a mantilla. I’m going to wear it to Adoration tomorrow and perhaps from there work up the courage to wear it at Mass. (I attend a NO Mass on a liberal college campus–I’d definitely be the only one there wearing one.)

I should be receiving my delivery from Devorah next week, I can’t wait to see it. And in the mean time I’ve bought a couple of scarves on eBay too so I have some variety.

Okay, all, I’m a closet veiler. A couple of years ago, I re-vamped my wardrobe after reading “Dressing With Dignity” (although I still have some issues with the book), and fell into the habit of wearing veils to Mass.

About that time, I ordered two reversible ones from Wendy’s and they were great, one grey and white and the other tan and white. I like the tan one, but wearing these particular styles made me look like a nun, so I keep them for 40 Hours and not Mass.

I have found parishes where it’s acceptable, and parishes where I’ve been verbally discouraged from wearing one.

Try googling “tznius” for many sites that sell wonderful headcoverings.(Tznius is an actual site, but that is also the Hebrew word for modesty, and you will find all kinds of wonderful things on the Jewish sites that come up in your search…)

Actually, really well. No hostility, though definitely a few curious looks at Mass. 🙂 This is a parish more used to short-shorts than mantillas. 😛 I’m so happy that I feel free to do this!

Good for you! I’m glad you had a positive experience!

We are going to have a whole bunch of friends with us at Mass today at our new parish, and one of my friends is going to cover her head for the first time! I’m so excited for her, and she is excited as well. We will have a couple with us who are in the process of converting to the Catholic Faith, and will have their two young children with them. It should be a wonderful Mass for everyone today - and it’s such a beautiful day here on top of it! So excited!!

This thread has been quiet for a while, but I think it’s just what I was looking for. Other threads are geared more toward debating whether a woman has to cover or not, but I just had a question for the sisters who do already cover (especially day-to-day):

What styles have you chosen to wear? I know there have been pictures and links posted to sites/styles that are both Christian and Jewish - but I have heard (on only a few instances, but I have heard) of some Catholic sisters covering in styles that look much closer to Muslim-style hijabs. I wonder - is this appropriate? At least for me, I tried it about a day or two, mostly just as an experiment to see what kind of reactions true hijabis get and see if people would treat me differently…a sort of “day in the life”…but I actually came away from the experience feeling empowered to live out my faith 24/7. In my everyday life, there’s nothing about my appearance that would lead anyone to believe I’m at all religious, let alone Catholic - and I found that the simple piece of fabric scarf around my head reminded me that I am called to be Christian everywhere - at church as well as the supermarket, at school, running errands, etc. It helped me keep myself, my words, my actions, my attitude and disposition in check. (I have since started wearing my St. Benedict medal/crucifix, which has helped tremendously and I absolutely love, yet I still feel a calling to cover in some way…which is part of the reason I’m asking. While I experiment with different styles, I’ve tended to go for more of a bun wrap, like this.)

So I asked some Catholic folks - some give the thumbs up and think it’s a very respectable thing to do, while others are concerned that looking like a Muslim sister would hinder one’s ability to witness to Christ and the Gospel, as we are called to do. I can *definitely *understand their reasoning and concern, so I just wanted to know if anyone’s ever heard of or seen Catholic young women in hijab-style headcoverings? And what do you think?

And again, I’m not looking to start any angry arguments, just hear any opinions and any possible experiences. Thanks a bunch! 🙂
 
To my self its a blessing to wearing lace veils for masses, keeps me concentrated on prayer and its tradition for masses the awareness around me . But i also know since vatican 2 its not require, back in the older tradition it was to keep men from looking at woman in a lustful way.

However I really enjoy wearing mine and I really Dont care what other say or think. ITs my head not theres, and as long as my deacon and Priest says its ok to wear it i will continue.
I have a sheer veil with lace trim and its oval shape its such a privilage to wear one, Most people i have talked to up here in the north didn’t even know what one was til i wore it sunday. Now they all want to know where i got lol.

Never let anyone put you down for the being the true catholic you are continue to wear your veil, Teach those around you,

In my church they forget when your in church its suppose to be quiet. This helps me to focus more to Mary and Christ, then to listen to them.

as a brethren i HAD to cover my head perminently when i converted to catholasism i noticed that in my parish the only people who wair vails were widows (and the nuns of couse) . i fealt uneasy in church with my head uncovered but didnt want to offend so i made a “demi veil” .
a demi veil is wide enough to cover from your forhead to the nape of you neck and is long enought that you can tigh it under neith your hair (this has the advantage of not worying about it slipping or loosing pins.) when worn properly it covers your fringe and ears (usefull in cold weather and dosnt impead your hearing ) .
i found that this head gear is accepted in every church i have been in from traditionalcatholic to low presbyterian.

I have recently started wearing headcoverings (about six months ago, and not on a regular basis at first). I started with wide headbands and now have a lot of coverings that I got on the etsy.com site (a site where people who handmake items can sell them). I have been to many of the coverings sites mentioned, and I also feel that maybe I am being led to cover more of my hair (most of my coverings are about 6-8" wide and I have very fine, long hair). I have tried to do some of the “bun” styles with a tichel (long scarf) but haven’t had any luck. I currently wear the smaller styles about every day.
As odd as this sounds, the place I feel the most uncomfortable covering is at Mass! Am I strange or what? I don’t feel odd at adoration because there are only a few people there so I always cover there and it does help keep me focused. But something about being in a room with 500 other people, none of them covering, is intimidating. So I continue to just wear the smaller coverings. I do have a beautiful black veil but I haven’t yet had the guts to wear it!😦
 
I am a fairly new Catholic and once I read 1 Corinthians 11:3-10,16 I was convinced that what I felt in my heart (lead by the Holy Spirit) about veiling was okay. I first veiled at Easter this past Spring and I thought my heart would beat out of my chest I was so scared of being scorned by my sister (who is Catholic) and others but so excited that I took a stand for Christ and His angels. I have never been sorry that I made this decision and I veil for Eucharistic Adoration also. I wear a long scarf over my head when I pray the Rosary and the Divine Mercy Chaplet each evening in my home. The above led me to wearing only skirts or dresses to Mass also. (another choice laid on my heart)

I would love to see the veil come back to all parishes along with more modest dress.
