my condolences on your loss. i will say a Rosary for you both…

there are modest clothing groups on many of the social chat forums (liek Livejournal) so if you belong to any of them, look around…
i got tons of advice and resources from modest_clothing on LJ.

and yeah… i suppose i would have thought the uber repressed subservient thing too… but i know too many really outgoing Orthodox Jewish women!

I’ve been reading here for awhile and just decided to go ahead and register! 🙂

I am fascinated by this thread and am wondering why women feel called to cover their heads? I am not trying to mock or be sarcastic - I am truly wondering what the basis for head covering is?

Thank you, Liza, for the sympathy and the information! In my area, places like Hobby Lobby also sell very inexpensive bandanas. They’re usually plain, though, as I guess most people buy them to decorate them their own way. Miz
I was just at Hobby Lobby a few days ago… I was in the ‘bandana aisle’ and thinking about headcoverings! It’s so interesting you mentioned that :p.
I started head covering during Lent several years ago. I always wore something–hat, bandana, or a more formal covering–in public. I stopped covering when Lent was over.
And again something else you mentioned: head covering during Lent… it seems I was just thinking about this a few days ago too! If memory serves, I was thinking about Lent, and how would seem like such a wonderful thing to wear a daily head covering.

And whether during Lent or throughout the year, I think it would also be a good thing to offer it up in reparation for all the immodesty in women’s fashion these days. I was actually thinking about that too (the subject of daily covering has been on my mind for the last few weeks, my soul is stirred by it as of late it seems). I was thinking about how wonderful it would be if such a thing took off and more Catholic ladies chose to voluntarily wear a daily head covering (for Jesus, number one), and as an inspirational model amidst the grevious impurity of fashions that have sadly become the so prevalent today.

I’m so sorry about your fiance, may he rest in the arms of Our Lord.
ac claire:
What you said about mantillas, Mrs Sally, is right on. We think of them as being “traditional” across the board, but really they are more of a Spanish tradition that has become global over the past half-century or so.

I am of Irish descent, and Irish ladies back in the day never wore mantillas. They wore hats and sometimes scarves or a kerchief.
It’s such an odd thing to think about things all week, and see the very things I was thinking about being mentioned pretty much straight down this forum. Yes! I was thinking about mantillas and the head coverings of Irish women of days past. (Are you all in my head :p? Seriously, I feel like Malkovich. See, this is why I’m searching to know if this is something that God is wanting for me. There are even more things that have happened… I know I’m getting off topic, but I have to say it because as it relates to my amazement in all this… My mother and I had a very brief conversation about head coverings. That very Sunday when she went to church a row - not one, not two, but a whole entire big huge row of ladies -all visitors never seen before - sat in front of her, and every one had head coverings. And appearing of all the Sunday’s too, because only few days before that I had prayed to Jesus asking Him that if it was His will for me to truly wear a head covering every day, to please somehow reveal it through my mother and make it undeniably obvious . I don’t want to take the thread with this, but I’d love to know everyone’s thoughts about if it is as obvious as I’m thinking. -Just put your message on my little profile wall, that’ll be fine - Oh, I’m excited!)

Back to headcoverings and your statement ac claire, I was wondering about the head coverings of Irish ladies of days past, because I’ve been interested in something not as formal as a mantilla (although beautiful) for throughout the week, and if I wore a covering on Sundays, I would wear the mantilla then because it’s more formal. At the same time, I don’t know if the bandana is exactly what I’m looking for throughout the week, although it is a possibility. I had found this style (picture)(page). I’m interested in all of the options available.

Anyway, as it is probably quite obvious by my post, I am so excited about this. And for so many wonderful reasons. I’m also intrigued by the posts here of other women who are wondering if perhaps this is something Our Lord is wanting for them. Before I saw this thread, I don’t know if I knew that other Catholic ladies out there were feeling led by the Lord in such a way. God bless you all :).

Do you have any questions?

Oh - and Chiara80 - if you have questions regarding why, just do a search of the forum and you will find countless discussions about the why part. I think this thread is mostly about how. 😉

Chiara, as I mentioned in my original post, the ‘seed was planted’ by talking to a woman online who covers all the time, and seeing that she was a normal, rational person who just feels the call to do so. Our conversation stuck in my mind for weeks.

Most people give up something for Lent, but I was already so strict (no smoking, drinking, drugs; and I was a raw vegan at the time–so no candy, coffee, etc.) that I couldn’t think of anything. I’m pretty low-maintenance and easy going, but one thing I am absolutely anal about is my hair. So I figured what I would ‘give up’ was my pride in my hair, so I decided to cover for Lent.

I did get one very nice comment from a co-worker, who said it was a great idea–that head covering was so ‘out there’ (obvious) and that she admired my commitment to my faith. Now, it was never my intention to be noticed for what I was doing for Lent; I think what she meant was that I was brave to choose something so noticeable as my personal ‘pennace.’

I’ve always felt like covering in a Catholic church (I have no idea why; I never covered in my own church). When I rejoined RCIA last month, I just started covering more and more often, until I’m doing it 99% of the time in public (I don’t cover in the privacy of my home).

La-Petite-Fleur and Fabricdragon, thank you both for your prayers. 🙂

I second this 😃

Unless the original poster or anyone else has an objection to me talking about this here, I just thought I’d say that I found La-Petite-Fleur’s sign through her mother to be very interesting and wouldn’t mind hearing about such things in this thread 🙂 or we could create a new thread for rambling about hair covering discernment 😉 (or even just about discerning our Lord’s will in general, whether through signs or feelings etc.) I’m interested in all of that. Anyone else?

I for one would love to see hats come back into fashion, I love hats. Until WW2 many women still wore a cap or scarf inside the house, for religious reasons like the Jews, or simply custom, to keep the hair clean as much as for modesty. You see houswives in 50s shows like Lucy wearing what we call in Detroit “do rags”, a scarf to keep the hair clean. There is a link somebody has posted here before to suppliers of patterns and ready made caps such as the “Martha Washington” style, my grandmother and her contemporaries still wore such caps in the house. Even when I was a child most women still put on a hat or scarf to go out of the house to run errands.

Our old neighborhood in Cleveland was in the center of an Orthodox Jewish area–synagogues within walking distance, real Jewish delis and meat markets–and those women wore wigs inside the home to keep the prescription on head covering, so that must be another good option. Do whatever works for your own circumstance, tradition presents a lot of choices, but a simple scarf tied behind the head at the nape of the neck, or sewn with velcro to make it easier and more secure, seems the best and least expensive. Don’t feel the need to justify or defend or explain your choices either, if it is right, just do it.

I found this site: christiancoverings.com/catalog.html?category=7
The only payment option for Canadians appears to be Paypal (which I know :confused:nothing about), so that problem remains.
But I see that all her veils are made with a snap closure. (If anyone wanted anything else, it rerquires a special order…which makes me think that there are those who use something other than a tied scarf, as a regular thing).

Paypal (which I know :confused:nothing about)
Paypal has a good reputation as far as I know. I use them and I have no complaints. It is quite easy to set up an account, similar to setting up an ebay account etc. Paypal verifies your information with your bank and is basically a layer of security between your bank account and the person you are buying from. It also assures the seller that you will in fact pay up.

I love this forum already! I know this post is old, but still thanks for the great links everyone. I am also feeling called to wear a head covering, as well as more simple and modest clothing. 🙂
I am so glad I found this thread!! I too, am feeling a calling for more modest dress and head coverings full time. I wasnt sure if it was noraml, or “OK” in the Catholic church, but I see that God has a devine plan for everyone and that for some of us it is His will that we cover our heads!

In Christ,
NIcole

No, I didn’t have any questions. I have followed all these headcovering threads with interest. The first time I attended a TLM I wore a borrowed mantilla, never dreaming I would need one. I had no idea they were worn. Later I attended the TLML with a simple black scarf or a hat on the few other occasions. My own parish is very small and rural with no TLM and this is not a Catholic area so I feel very conspicuous in a headcovering. Last winter I wore a hat that was warm and stylish. I did it to cover, but when spring came I lost the nerve to stand out. I love hats and I love refurbishing and remodeling second hand and vintage hats. Adding a touch or removing something and restyling a little is so much fun! I like to get ideas looking at the hat sites on the internet. I have become very interested in dressing femininely and modestly over the past decade. I always wear dresses to Mass, but I guess I feel a little old at 56 to appear too different in my parish by wearing the hats. But YET, I still do want to cover, just can’t get going. I will do the hats now that it is time for warm coats again. My church is very cold, so it is very comfortable to wear a hat if only for that reason alone.

I think that would be interesting too :). If you decide to form a new thread about discernment of covering full time, please let me know. I really believe God answered my prayer, and since I started I’ve just felt such, such peace. I could talk about it for hours :o.

I feel the same way! I’m just fascinated that there are other Catholic ladies who are feeling led to do this daily. It’s also nice to be able to talk to you all as we seem like we’re kind of going through similar things. When I have a private time for prayer, I’ll remember to pray for the ladies on this thread (please say a little prayer for me too!) God bless you 🎉.

Ok, I created Headcovering Women’s Clubhouse inside of the “Clubhouse” section of the “Water cooler” section, so it can be a more laid back thread. I’m hoping that you all, and any women from the other headcovering threads would come there for a little fellowship. Since it’s a clubhouse it doesn’t need to stay on topic at all times. Pretty much the only requirement is that you be a woman who feels called to cover her head 😃

For example, our first discussion could be about La-Petite-Fleur’s sign, and how each of us felt the call 🙂

I also had that exact same picture of a head covering in my mind when I was moved by the Lord to wear a headcovering. It came out of no where I had no prior knowledge of women wearing headcovering today, until I searched ofr it here! What a great idea to wera a headcovering as an offering for all the in modest dress that women and men wear laelty. This is a great support system for women who feel called to this. Thanks for everyones posts!!

Oh wow, I really like that one too! I think something like that could be simple enough that I could buy my own fabric and just finish the edges. (I’m a very very amateur seamstress 😊)

I hope Devorah will continue to make that style, and in many different prints. I do like it as well.

I live how versatile it is. You can lay it over your head mantilla-style or tie it around like a scarf, any number of ways.
