Headcovering question- would this have cut it back in the day?

Maybe the reason that covering my head doesn’t matter to me is that I saw too many Kleenexes at Mass. Covering our heads wasn’t special, or reverent - it was just what we were supposed to do. Maybe if I was 25 years younger, I’d want to do wear something on my head, and if it’s ever mandated I will. But I’ll always remember thinking I had to put something – ANYTHING – my head to go into church.
 
I juat have a qucik question to our Mennonite friend. I cover always because of the headship principle and that I feel God has lead me and convected me to cover. I’m Catholic by choice I converted as a teen and my Husband Is the head of my household so I follow the faith with him. I do however have a question as the Mennonites and their customs. I have many mennonite friends that I asscoiate with but I would not consider converting first off because my husband is Catholic but also because I see so many squables here over little things. In reference to Covering there are many mennoites who will were Caps, others Veils, others doilys some wear white others black others blue also as to womens dress some churches will wear Cape Dresses others not and different styles. I understand the Cape dresses are done due to Modesty as well as other dresses I myself wear dresses most days. Is this done for a reason for the different Bonnets,Caps.Scarves,Veils Etc? DO the individual churches decide? Is it personal Perference? I was just wondering because my understanding of the scriptutres say I’m to be Modest and Covered… I do see in there that a Vield Chirstian is going to get into heaven faster than one with a Cap or a Snood. It simply says to Cover your head. please explain to me why Mennonites have such variation in this. Thanks and God Bless you.

My husband definitely has an opinion on what I cover my head with. I bought a beautiful cloche style hat with a partially turned up brim, black wool with a black satin bow, that I was going to wear for Christmas. He loved the hat, but was a bit disappointed. He prefers lace veils on me - he feels that it makes it special for Mass and not just a hat. He doesn’t pick them out, but he does notice and has an opinion - it’s very nice actually! 🙂

Sorry had an ADD moment… LoL:D Just wondering why the arugements of the what kind to wear. I think its an invidual prefrence just as weather or not to cover what to cover with is up to each person. I personally would not feel 'covered" enough in just a headband but if someone is convortable with that to each her own.

I want to respond to a remark made by a poster that we women from “back in the day” covered our heads when we entered the House of God because “we were told to” and not because we knew why we did it.

I resent that remark.😦 I was born in 1930 and grew up under the guidance of the Holy Sisters at a Catholic grade school. We most certainly knew why we covered our heads; out of respect for the House of God and not out of fear of the Sisters.:nun2:

I have worn hats, babuskas, mantillas, etc. as a head covering. As I grew older and my hair thinned I found that the mantillas would slip so I purchased a chapel cap online from Devorah.:heaven:

I now wear a Buchari Style Kippah whenever I enter a Church whether for Mass or for Adoration and I carry it with me at all times so I can make quick visits if I am near a Catholic Church. Because it is shaped to the head it does not slip and distract me. That is what I intend to wear from now on. I bought one in ivory color but intend to purchase another in black.

Nothing sexier in this Trads mind then a properly dressed women with a scantily clad head covering.

I love it. To bad this tradition is just about dead.

I saw a video of that catholic/orthodox church in Jerusalem. Can’t remeber what it is called(Holy sepulcre or something like that). There was a pic of this young lady with a full head covering… smokin! I don’t know if it is the outward manifestation of humility or the hiding of a treasure.

I love the head covering. For me please don’t wear them so I don’t think an impure thought.

Dang it - you can’t even have a conversation with people - even when you LOAD your post with caveats - without people getting all in a bunch.

That was me. There’s nothing for you to resent. I wasn’t including people I don’t know in my “we”. Your day and my day were 20 years and several hundred miles apart. I described my experience, along with my sister and our friends. My other sister is 12 years younger than me, and didn’t have the same experience either.

My point was that I thought I had to put something on my head, even if it was a dried up old maple leaf or a rumpled Kleenex, to step in the door of the church, and perhaps that’s why covering my head isn’t important to me.

IMO, that’s not a headcovering, it is just a headband. It doesn’t cover anything. Look at the description “Beautiful Wide headband”.

I am a pre-Vatican II-er but I never remember any time that women wore a veil to Mass. What I DO remember are hats… and fancy ones at that, and very stylish. My mother always wore either a hat or head-covering, like a scarf, even with Novus Ordo. But, just to answer your question with an opinion, no, I do not believe that a wide headband would be considered a valid covering back in the “old days.”

That would come more under the bandana catagory.
The point I made about the wide head band covering as much as the round chapel veil or cap makes sense to me. When you compare pictures, and think of how chapel caps are worn now days at the back of the head and hardly seen from the front; and most of them I’ve seen are black and hardly stand out as covering anything.

sample shown stands out more then a black one, but still hardly counts as covering except for the top of your head. I imagine if you had short hair it would work better, just as a wide head band would.
