Hey, I haven’t even mentioned PA in this thread but while we’re on the subject, have you read it yet? 😉

In your MM design, would you also include a pager system so we can locate them all easier? There’s 5 gals in the house so far.

I don’t know if the technical glitches are mine or the forums. I see that there are 37 messages but 42 show up and I also show T was the last person who posted but when I look I see mine. It seems when I post again all of the problems go away so here goes. Sorry!

I know it’s no longer an obligation for women to wear a headcovering during Mass…
Why is it that mostly non-Catholic women wear one when visiting the Vatican in an official event? Is it because of protocol? I noticed that those who are Catholic do not wear one then.

But on the subject, I find it a pious practice. Too bad I’ve never seen a woman younger than 60 wearing one in the Roman Rite.

:blessyou:

I am male, and attend the TLM and the so-called Novus Ordo. I personally find veils very attractive and feminine. They are quite beautiful.

Of course, no one is shocked to see women with their heads covered in the TLM, but it would be shocking and distracting in the ‘regular’ Mass. You will find no veiling in the ‘regular’ Mass, here.

Having visited with females on the subject locally, I found that many would love to wear some form of veil, but are afraid to, for fear of standing out. Most have said that they would be glad to if only there were others who did it first.

Even the ‘alpha females’ are afraid to adopt veiling, hoping that some ‘super alpha female’ will do it first. I’m fairly certain that in any given parish if a few of the really ‘cool’ females started doing it, others would, as well. It takes guts to initiate something like that.

BTW, I was told that the obligation to veil was never overturned, but through errant news reporting, back in the day, it was somehow reported that way. Does anyone have some knowlege on the history of the fall of the veil?

I loved wearing the headcovering, the veil at Mass when I was young. I missed them at first but don’t even think about it now. I would wear a veil again if men had a head covering too. I think that would be nice.

It is just my opinion, but anyone under the age of 70 wearing a veil is simply because they want to, not because they feel naked. It was a long time ago, very long.

cargopilot,

I don’t have the source, but I know I read this on one of the many other “headcovering/veil, etc” threads here!

From what I understand, during Vatican II, a correspondant stopped a Cardinal and asked him about whether veils were going to continue to be required.

He looked at her and told her that it was not on the adjenda.

She ran and told the world that veils were no longer required and of course veils went out the window with the rest of modesty in the sexual revolution.

As an aside, I actually have been thinking a lot of why I wear the veil and recently articulated this to a pastor I know who was “ordained” a minister for an evangelical parish.

Anyway, here is what I have realized (although I don’t think this necessarily applies to all women):

I am all about my hair, as many women are. I love to play with my hair by changing colors, etc. I love getting a new cut and showing it off. Overall, I don’t consider myself to be a good looking woman, however when my hair looks good I feel attractive.

I have often been complimented on my hair and how thick it is, how healthy, etc.

When I cover my hair at Mass, I am making an offering and a sacrifice. I am acknowledging my vanity to God and saying that this does not belong at Mass, where people need to be focused on Jesus.

Maybe it sounds stupid, but the other day when I went to Adoration immediately after I had my hair cut, I realized that at a time when I wanted to be noticed the most, I was covering what would cause me to stand out in deference and respect to the Lord and Savior of us all.

:o

I’m not sure where other women stand on this, but I know for a FACT that we are ALL ABOUT OUR HAIR. It’s a girl thing.

I just read on the web some views of the wearing (or not) of head coverings, or veils in Church. I was surprised to be classed as thinking I was repressed as a reason for not wearing a head covering. Not at all true. I loved the veils and only stopped wearing them because it was phased out. I missed wearing them but I am sure God doesn’t mind whether I am wearing a veil or not. I rather wish there was something to say do or don’t because some doing and some don’ting is probably worse.

I have to tell you that as a man who’s got used to sinning for many years, I still fall in the sin of lust towards women. I still turn my head towards a passing beautiful woman, but instead I restrict my gaze to her neck and up.

That been said, I wish that women would at least be more mindful at Mass about modesty. It’s not their fault that some of us are repeating sinners, but they would do us a great spiritual favor by making it harder for us men to sin.

Again, I have to confess that I’ve spent a good deal of time contemplating a woman’s hair at Mass. It’s no accident that women pay so much attention to their hair, we do take notice.

In this sense, the veil would help, but perhaps it would only make sense in this day and age if everything else is as modest. Thus, the hair is the least of our occasions for sin, in Mass or out of it.

:blessyou:

Just an interesting aside:

My boyfriend grew up in Nigeria. Apparently all the women there wear some kind of headcovering when they go to church.
I would like to wear a headcovering to church but I guess I’ve been too afraid to stand out. Silly isn’t it?

On a sudden whim I bought two quite beautiful veils recently and now find myself hesitant about wearing them since I certainly have not been. I feel kind of bashful about it. :o I thought perhaps a good way to break myself into the idea/habit would be to wear them when I go to Adoration each week. Or maybe I could suggest to Father to give it to me as a penance so I would have to!

Or – maybe all of us who would like to see it become customary again should choose a Sunday – say, Feast of Corpus Christi – and wear them to honor our Lord. What do you think?

p.s. I’m not really suggesting some kind of national movement or anything.

I wear a shawl like mantilla to every mass I go to. Yes I have gotten a few looks from wearing it. To me the veil is a sign of humility and respect. No ones opinion or stare will keep me from wearing it 🙂

As a young Catholic man, I think that women look beautiful wearing chapel veils during Mass. A true expression of modesty and femininity.
