Healing Mass... has anyone been to one?

Does anyone have any advice or comments on how to prepare for one’s first attendance at a healing mass? I plan on being open to whatever God has in mind, but I’d like to be as mentally and spiritually prepared as possible, and would appreciate any comments. I’ve spoken with my priest, who will also be in attendance, and he agreed that I should just be open…

Any other thoughts from anyone who has been to one?

If anyone would like to share his/her experience, I would appreciate it.

I loved every healing Mass ever attended. Father McAlear’s healing Mass frmac.org/ was the last one I attended. You can read about him at his website. Just relax. Everyone needs to be healed. Even the priests attending are prayed for. 🙂
 
Your Priests advise is the very best you will receive.

Most Healing Masses are of the Charismatic flavor.

We just had our first Charismatic Mass in our parish although it was not a healing Mass but rather a Praise and Worship Mass.

First of all, if it is a Charismatic Mass, there might be lots more singing, mostly Praise music. You might see folks raising their hands in prayer. You might even hear some strange language, either spoken or in song.

You will not be expected to take any more part in what is going on around you than you would at regular Sunday Mass. Don’t feel pressured and please do not judge what you see. As your Priest instructs, just be open to the Holy Spirit. Leave the discernment to the Priests present.

When it comes time for prayers of intercession or for healing, just open up to what Jesus might want to do for you. Either leave your mind quiet or say Prayers of Gratitude. I like to say one should expect miracles but if you do not see them happen just remain open.

I went to a healing mass once. At the end of the mass the priest announced that it was time for the annointing of the sick. So we all lined up to go to the front of the church for the annointing. There were two strong men positioned behind each parishoner when it was his/her turn for the annointing. As soon as the person was annointed he/she appeared to faint into the arms of the ushers. Some of the people fell all the way to the floor. I must admit I was not at all comfortable watching the fainting but I stayed in line and received my annointing. Nothing happened to me. I guess I either wasn’t receptive of whatever was supposed to happen or the other people were more blessed. I don’t think I will go to another one.

Actually this isn’t fainting it is called resting in the Holy Spirit.
At the conclusion of the healing Mass, parishioners or priests who have the charism of healing (1 Corinthians 12:9) lay hands on those who come for prayer and pray for their requests. As some people are being prayed over, the power of the Holy Spirit will come over them and they will fall backward and rest in the Spirit. As these people are resting in the Spirit, God will minister to them and they will be filled with peace (one of the fruits of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22)).
Not everyone falls backward and rests. That doesn’t mean the Holy Spirit isn’t working. This can seem a little alarming to some at first. I don’t mind seeing this happen to others or the prospect of it happening to me. There are always select big strong men there to catch people so they don’t hurt themselves. I haven’t seen anyone hurt yet.
 
Before attending a Healing Mass, I like to go to Confession to help prepare me to be as open as possible to the work of the Holy Spirit.
 
Thank you to all who have written. Contemplative… what you described is pretty much what my priest said… he did say it was probably going to be charismatic, and I know that after the Mass there will be the praying over/for individuals.

I appreciate the prayers 🙂 It’s tomorrow evening, a couple of hours’ drive away, and I want to spend some time ahead of time just quieting my mind, etc. They are offering Reconciliation before it too… I think I will do that as well (as someone suggested…)

I went to a talk with healing provided individually afterwards by the priest. My family & I went up and asked the priest to pray for healing of sins which my husband and I may have or may be committing which could affect our children & their spiritual growth. He laughed! I have no idea why; maybe he just wanted us to pray for physical ailments. Confession, forgiveness, & penance have always provided me with all I need.

I really love the healing Masses. I have been to many. They are all different. Sometimes people line up to be anointed with oil and end up falling backward and resting in the Spirit. Sometimes people in the pews join hands and pray for their neighbors. Sometimes there are prayer teams made up of lay people where you can go for individual prayer. This normally happens after Mass.

Be warned that these Masses are usually much longer than the normal Sunday Mass. They can last up to three hours. Don’t plan on getting to bed very early if you stay for the whole thing.

I find these Masses very peaceful and uplifting. I always come away with a tangible sense of rest and peace. You can just sense the presence of the Holy Spirit. Why is this so? Well, I think that all of the people who go to these healing Masses are there because they really want to praise God and they really want to be there. I think many people go to Sunday Mass simply because they are worried that they will go to hell if they don’t go.
They can’t get out of there fast enough.

How should you react if someone gives a word of prophesy or knowledge? I’m sure that this would be in the category of private revelation, so you certainly wouldn’t be required to believe it if you didn’t want to. I think you can just relax and enjoy the peaceful loving atmosphere.

I think people should just go to one. If they are really bugged by it, they don’t have to come back. However, I don’t think they should be critical of people who find them a special blessing.
 
I’m back from my first experience at a healing Mass. It’s almost 1am and I drove 250 miles today there and back and I want to go to sleep! But wanted to say that I had a wonderful experience and would do it again when I have the opportunity…

I have a question also. I not only prayed for myself, but I felt like I wanted to ask for healing for some other people in my life. The priest who prayed over me said I could stand proxy for those people. So I said their names. And then he prayed over me and mantioned their names too.

My question is about letting the people know I prayed for them… I feel like I would like to tell them that they were “at” a healing Mass. They all have something going on in their lives that could use extra prayers. But could it be seen as sort of selfish or conceited to tell them that I did this…? If you had been prayed for during a Healing Mass, would you appreciate knowing? Or feel weird about it?

Incidentally, I learned from the priest that vitamins B6 and E are good for carpal tunnel… 🙂
 
been to several,but follw your priests advice & instuction (if any), because I’ve found that each service is different from others

confession & prayer prior also help (at least can’t hurt)
 
I actually just got home from one about a half an hour ago. It was like a regular mass, with more prayers for forgiveness and healing. Then the priest blessed the oils, and then began to bless the people who needed healing. Yes - I rested in the Spirit, even though I never expected the fainiting to happen because I am so strong willed. It is not that you faint per se, as you are conscious and aware of things happening around you. It just feels like you cannot move, almost as if you are paralyzed. But it is the most peaceful feeling that I have ever experienced in my entire life. It is hard to explain, but something that I will never forget.
For those who ask how to prepare for this, I don’t think you ever can. God is full of surprises, and we do not know when he will send His Holy Spirit to comfort us and heal us.
