Healing Mass Question

I have a question about an upcoming Healing Mass i will be attending. I know at the end when the Priest annoints you you are supposed to ask for healing about something. The thing is i dont know how to go about this so if you could just an example of what i oculd ask that would help me greatlythink of somehting personal to me to ask healing for. Thank you.
 
The sacrament of anointing of the sick is for those who are sick, and especially those who are near the time of death.

The sacrament unites the suffering of the sick person to the passion of Christ, grants strength, peace and courage to endure suffering or old age, forgives sins if the person is not able to go to confession, and God may physically heal you if it is required for the salvation of your soul.

But if you don’t have an actual physical or mental condition, something more than just anxiety over a job or the common cold, then you should not be recieving the sacrament. If you are not sick then you should refrain from going forward and just sit or kneel in prayer for those who are recieving the sacrament.

OK thanks for your reply i was just wondering because i read an older post before i joined the site and he described it as many people who werent actually physically sick went and were anointed and fainted. I was just wondering but thank you for your help
 
To the OP:

I went to my first healing Mass this month. At those, the annointing of the sick is allowed for other then the most dire. I went to my priest…who knows what I need healing for and didn’t ask. I noticed that others whispered it to the other priest that was there.

One of the things I will not tell…but the other was a back issue that I’m in physical therapy for. Of course if you can walk and stand…it is polite to let others go ahead of you in line. We had quite a few elderly people that had trouble standing that long and I let them in ahead of me.

It was quite a blessing for me…and I hope it is for you as well!
 
Thank you Anabelle so this i take it this Healing Mass is just for physical conditions?
 
no…the other thing that I went for has nothing to do with physical. And it was what the priest was praying for…

You may be going to a healing Mass where the sacrament of anointing of the sick is not given, but since you mention anointing with oil, it sounds like it is.

It is best to ask the priest. Don’t take my word for it. Ask the priest if this is the sacrament. There is some ignorance about the sacrament, and I don’t mean that in a bad way, just that some are not aware.

I was an altar server at a healing Mass two weeks ago where the sacrament was administered. The priest did not mention that it was just for those who were sick and almost everyone came forward. I don’t know if everyone was sick or not and maybe they were. I have no way to tell. I do know at least one couple who was there and both recieved the sacrament, and running into them last week asked if they were OK and they were fine, no illness. They were not aware that the sacrament was reserved for those with serious illness.

Again, ask the priest. Don’t take my word for it.

Thank you for all your answers. So if it is the sacrament of annointing the sick am i still allowed to attend the mass but just not go up for the sacrament.
 
BTW…I had asked the priest if my back was enough for the sacrament. I said it’s painful but doesn’t require surgery or anything. His response was that it was enough for an annointing. BTW…if you asked me I would say I was fine too…some things are not everyones business.

This is at a healing Mass…not calling out a priest to do an annointing for the common cold…

Yes…you can go to the Mass…and the annointing…I would still ask your priest. They are there already…it’s not like they are going out somewhere special to do an annointing on you.

It helps when the priest explains to the congregation what they are receiving. Usually at
Masses that are called healing Masses it has nothing to do with the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick.
People are going up for a blessing in which the priest uses blessed oil, but it is not the oil that is consecrated for the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick.
 
Thank you Dorothy so just as an example how would i ask for healing. I know what i want healing for i just dont know how to for it to the priest.

I believe that what you are describing is not the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick. A healing Mass is where people pray for healing of physical ailments, emotional problems, and spiritual problems.

Actually all Masses are healing Masses, in that we receive the Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity of Our Lord Jesus Christ. We can ask Him to grant us all that we need to follow Him more closely. Healng Masses put a spotlight on the healing aspect that is really always there at every Mass.

When they go up in faith to be blessed by the priest they should be going in the hope of receiving from the Holy Spirit a grace that they need. Usually it is not necessary to ask for a particular healing unless the priest requests that you verbalize that. Most of the time the congregation goes up and says nothing to the priest, but jus presents themselves for prayer. Sometimes they are “overshelmed in the spirit” and do fall down for a few moments.
 
Would an example of Spiriual healing be asking for healing because i havent been to church in two years and a void has grown between me and God because i neglected his teachings and i am now tryign to get in touch with him again by going to confession, praying, and going to every mass. And if that does count how could i summarize that shortly for the priest if he asks.

If you are encouraged to verbalize what you desire, you can say that you would like a closer relationship with the Lord. (with the fortitude to pray, receive the Sacraments frequently, and focus on Him in all that you do.)

It doesn’t sound like the sacrament. They do some “healing” after the sermon at a hospital chapel I sometimes attend and most, even visitors, go up, even though they all appear healthy.

All I know is I was anointed with oil on my forehead and hands as the priest prayed over me.🤷

We can all “appear” healthy but that does not normally tell you what is going on…right…

When I lived up north, for many years I attended a Day of Reflection once a month that included two conferences, a “healing” Mass (all Masses are healing if we are receptive!), sharing with others of their healings.

The greatest healings are spiritual healings. People shared about being healed of resentment, anger, and unforgiveness of what others had done to hurt them. There are healings we need that we do not even understand about, but the Holy Spirit does. Many have been hurt in various ways in their childhood, and need healing from that…with the grace of forgiveness.

The Carmelite priest that gave these retreats had a great charism of spiritual direction. His conferences were on the mystical doctors of the Church, St. John of the Cross, St. Teresa of Avila, and St. Therese of Lisieux.
Over a period of about seven years, he monthly gave retreats on other subjects as well, such as the gifts and fruits of the Holy Spirit.

He also blessed oil, water, and salt for us to bring home and use these sacramentals. This oil that he blessed was a sacramental, not a Sacrament. The oil used for the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick is blessed annually at the Cathedral for that purpose alone, along with others oils such as for Confirmation and Baptism. He made sure that we understood this.
