I have heard the term “healing mass” and never really knew what it was about. My sister was telling me that a friend of hers recently went to one. Her daughter died earlier this year and she has really been struggling. She started talking with a priest in her area. She says he is psychic and told her things about her daughter’s death that no one else knew. This is the priest who does the healing masses. I looked him up online and it seems he does them all the time. I was just wondering what they were all about and if they were legitimate or not. She said her friend’s other child was “knocked out” for about 10 minutes. This sounds strange and kinda scary to me. Reminds you of the kind of things you see televangelists doing! Any information provided would be appreciated. I tried looking it up online and didn’t really find anything helpful. Thanks

Rudy,
I hope to dispel some of your fears.
The priest is not “psychic,” although he may have received a word of knowledge. This is a charism by which the Lord reveals something that he/she could not otherwise have known. A charism is a special gift of God’s grace.
Charisms have been active within the Church since its very beginning. St. John Vianney, for instance, was given the charism to read a person’s heart. He is the patron saint of priests and would spend long hours in the Confessional, When a penitent came to him, he often revealed their hidden sins.

Healing Masses are legitimate. There are actually two types. In the first, the celebrant anoints individuals with the Sacrament of the Sick.
The second, the type that you are probably wondering about is often associated with the Charismatic Renewal within the Catholic Church.
After Mass, individuals come forward to be prayed over for healing.
When your sister’s friend was “knocked out,” she was experiencing what is known as “being slain in the Spirit,” or “resting in the Spirit.” She was overpowered by the Holy Spirit. Healing was taking place during those 10 minutes.

It is nothing to fear. I have a friend who wasn’t sure what to make of things the first time she saw somebody slain in the Spirit. She had gone to a healing Mass. When this woman went to the floor, she wondered why everybody just kept walking around her. After all, she knew these where good people. Were it a medical emergency, they would be the first to call 911.

Thanks for the information. It was very helpful. But the priest holds himself out as “psychic” which has nothing to do with the masses. I suppose he sees people for just this reason.

This is problematic. I would recommend talking to his bishop or religious superior.

Deb’s info on Healing Masses is spot-on.

I agree with Spirithound that this is problematic. I can see a person asking how he knew something and his responding “I guess I’m just psychic” in order to downplay the gift. Saying “I received a Word of knowledge,” or “The Lord revealed it to me” can lead to questions of sanity if not adequately explained. It is still better than using a term that can definitely be misconstrued.

On the few occasions when I have received a Word of Knowledge, the reaction was “Don’t do that!” when I said something based on that knowledge. It can be scary when somebody has knowledge that you never revealed.

If he truly considers himself a psychic, he is dabbling in the occult- his “gifts” come from the devil, not from God. If that is the case, avoid him like the plague. And yes, it has everything to do with the Masses- the Eucharist (the Mass) should shape everything the priest says and does. He can’t just do something outside of that that is in total contradiction to the ways of God, and expect to be a good priest.

I had just lost my uncle ( favorite) last september , and my mom and dad both had surgeries done. So I went to a healing mass, It was awesome, My old Priest, who use to work with the healing masses around my area ( or who did) said a healing mass begins with confession, because your confession is part of your healing . Then we did the St Michael prayer ( archangel) for protection , then a rosary, then they asked us to empty our minds of all things, Because only God knows what we need…Then they laid hands on you/ me , and God gives you /me what’s needed, could be of the spirit , mind, or body. And yes you can go into what they call " resting in the spirit" Its a awesome experience and I would encourage all to go to a healing mass, Its really enjoyable. I was so in peace when i left there , I never have experience the peace like that in years. But now I know how to obtain my peace, before my priest left ( moved on) he said you have that peace in you and you know what you must do.

My experience of a Healing mass.

“My resting of the Spirit” came to me at morning mass the next day" the light I seen around my priest and myself, yes it scared me cause I wasn’t sure what was going on but I was so at peace.

They told us after the healing mass, that more then likely you would experience the Resting in spirit , anytime. Not just at the Healing masses.

Hello rudy,

I have been a Chrismatic for almost 40 years, and firmly believe that all of God’s revelation is contained in the Bible. It is written: "For I testify unto every man that heareth the words of this book, If any man shall add unto these thing, God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book: (Revelation 22:18)

Here is an example of a valid Prophetic word delivered to the Buring Bush News Letter that was sent to me from the Diocese of Oakland, California:

Begining of Prophetic Word:

PROCLAIM GOOD NEWS!!

The Spirit of the Lord is upon you, My people, to proclaim Good News to heal, to give sight to the blind, casue the deaf to hear and the lame to leap for joy as you announce the favor of the Lord who loves you with Power-filled Love.

Let your words be filled with Grace and Mercy to bring Hope and Courage to those who hear! My Word of Peace, Protection and Provision have the Power to produce what I promise. When you see a negative, proclaim My positive opposite and watch Me turn it inside out for greater good! Encourage one anouther while it is still today. Proclaim Good News and stay alert to see Me accomplish My purpose in many lives!

END of Prophetic Word.

Did you notice that every word of that revelation is contained in the Bible? I would suggest that you test the Spirits to see whether Word of Knowlege that you have mentioned is from the Bible, because I never read anything like that in the Bible.

Your old priest is right. The Sacrament of Reconciliation is a healing Sacrament. What were the first words that Jesus usually said when he healed somebody. "Your sins are forgiven you."Healing can be emotional, physical, or spiritual. You will often hear a person talk about “inner healing.” That is the healing, especially spiritual healing that is not seen. Often only the person being healed will be aware of it. What other people see is the change in the person’s behavior as a result of an improved attitude. Inner healing generally precedes physical healing.
Two major reasons that Christ healed were as a reward for faith or to bring a person to faith.
Although not required, I like the return of the Confiteor in the Mass.
You are right. Resting in the Spirit is not limited to a healing Mass. The Peace of Christ is beyond understanding, as you have experienced.

I attended a healing Mass a few weeks ago and took my daughter who has a problem. The priest must have laid hands on 150 people and spoke to each of us. Although the music was so loud it was difficult to hear him. I used to be involved in the Chrismatic movement at a Catholic Church before becoming Catholic.

I believe that there can be healings if God so wills it. Only one person was slain in the Spirit that I saw.

The only problem I see with the movement is that the one I used to go to many years ago was led by a layman. He left the Church and started his own and took many Catholics with him.

I feel that you must always have a priest in charge at these Masses. The one I went to, the Church was run by an order of religious and they were not into the movement, but celebrated the Mass. Because there was no guidelines by a priest it created this man to interpret the Bible on his own and I feel he felt that he had so much influence over the group that he could decide what was the correct teaching and not the Church.

Yours in the Hearts of Jesus and Mary

Dear Bernadette,

I got started into the chrismatic Movement about the same way you did, but with a Nun on the Catholic side and a very handsom young Protestant leader on the other side. Why our Parish allowed these inner faith prayer meetings I will never know? We Catholics were so impressed with the fake, “Spiritual Gifts” of the Protestants, that many of us ended up leaving the Catholic Church. As I look back at it all, I have to concluded that the Catholic Laity simply wanted more power to participate in the worship than what the new Catholic Mass was giving them. Being liberated from the strict Latin Mass simply lead us into wanting more and more freedom to worship. I will always be a Chrismatic, but I put it on the back burner.

How can we get better healing than through the Body and Blood of Christ?

ALL Eucharistic Liturgies are healing.

I don’t understood this at all either, even when I was Catholic it sounded dangerous. It juxtaposes the liturgy with an alternative that is “better” because it will offer “healing.” What could possibly be better than making use of the Sacraments, especially Christ Himself in the Eucharist? After all, Christ did give them to us. No priest, no matter whether they have these charisms or not can give someones soul the nourishment that the Sacraments can.

I pray I don’t offend anyone, but I think that the great Saints of the Roman Church were able to do just fine without falling on the floor, singing in gibberish, dancing around and other things that the modern Charismatic Movement offers, which seems quite foreign to the early Church. I believe that the Charismatic Movement in the Catholic Church is dangerous as it seems to be a large, large bridge to Protestantism. However, people are free to discount what I said. It is the internet after all.🤷

my parish has a Healing Ministry where after mass people pray for those who are in need of prayer.

The Charismatic Renewal takes nothing away from the Sacraments. To the contrary, members of the Renewal come to a greater love and appreciation of these Sacraments. Many attend daily Mass and rediscover the rosary.
Is the Mass the only time that we pray? Of course not. Our very life is to be a life of prayer.
This begins with the Sacrament of Reconciliation as mentioned in post #7. We are call to repentance, to a lifelong journey of conversion leading to Christ. Our healing process has begun.
We receive Christ when we receive the Eucharist, the source and summit of our faith. Christ is the source of our healing.
Were the Sacrament of the Eucharist all that were needed for individuals to be healed, would the Church have need of the Sacrament of the Sick? This Sacrament can be administered during the Mass to those in need.
Even when the Sacrament of Anointing is not part of the day’s Liturgy, why not make use of the power that each of us has received through the Sacrament of the Eucharist to pray for one another immediately after Mass? As scripture says, “Where two or more are gathered, there am I.” When Peter told the cripple to stand, he did not take credit for the healing. He gave credit where it belongs. Any healing that takes place when we pray for one another gives honor, glory and praise to our Creator.

Unlike non-Catholic denominations who did not recognize the power of the Holy Spirit at work in the lives of Pentecostals during the late nineteenth and early twentieth century, the Catholic Church has recognized the charisms for what they are, a special grace. Saints from the earliest days of the Church (see Acts) have continued to enjoy God’s favor throughout the history of His Church. God does what He wills in Heaven and on Earth.

The gift of tongues is mentioned specifically by St. Paul (as the lowest of gifts, but still). It was practiced by the Apostles at Pentecost, and the Apostles were all healers. It has been well-established in the Roman Rite that dancing is not to be done in a liturgical setting, but in extra-missal events, I see nothing against it. The gifts that we see are nothing new.

Yes I have been there at these masses, so beautiful, so peaceful, so warm and resting in the spirit is a taste of heaven. We should all want to experience it
