How can I heal the wounds and the memories of and from the past???

I know from experience that it is not easy. I got the following prayer from the sermon of a priest and find it helpful:

"Lord Jesus I can’t forgive __________. I can’t, so You have to forgive them for me. You forgive them for me. I am turning all that over to You. I am turning over all those terrible memories, all that pain, to You. Lord Jesus I’m inviting You into those events – each and every one of them, the ones that I remember and the ones I can’t remember. All that pain, all those events. I know You were present and I’m asking You to come into those events and heal me and to forgive __________ for me.

Please rearrange the interior furniture of my soul – my emotions, my imagination, my memories. Please heal the memories and the pain associated with them. Heal the memories, soothe the pain. Please also heal my self-inflicted wounds.

Lord Jesus I can’t forgive myself. I need You to take charge of it for me. You heal my self-hatred. I’m turning this over to You. I’m turning over all the terrible memories, the imaginations, the pain. I’m turning over all of it. Lord Jesus I’ve already confessed my sins and now I’m turning to You and begging You to heal me. I’m inviting You into those events – each and every one of them, all of them. The ones I remember, the ones I don’t remember. All that pain, and all those events. I know You were present and I’m asking You to come into those events and heal me. Forgive me, for me. Please move through my life and rearrange the interior furniture of my soul, heal the memories, and soothe the pain."

**He also suggested pray a healing prayer like this now & especially after Communion - “May Your body O Lord Jesus Christ be unto me a safeguard and a healing remedy both of soul and body. Amen.”

I read something that Jesus told a holy priest who lived last century, in a locution perhaps.

It was that an act of surrender does more than many prayers.

That really stayed with me… maybe that can help 🙂

I was tortured by certain memories for over a decade. The mind tries to console itself by changing what it remembers, so we remember what we wish had happened instead of what actually happened. After making a good confession, I received the grace to remember events accurately. Then I made a second confession and received absolution.

Maybe you aren’t at fault for what is bothering you, as I was, but remember that despair comes from failing to trust God. Confessing despair may be a help to you.

To Dorothy: Thank you for posting those recordings.

Hi Jaysdec,

I can tell you from my own experience that it just takes time to heal. I don’t think that there is any set/particular time frame, because each of us is different and unique.

Be gentle and easy on yourself, and just give yourself time to heal, and allow yourself to grieve.

For me, I went through personal counseling, and I also read self-help books about toxic relationships and abusive relationships, and that helped, too.

You are welcome Wafflenator…most everyone I share that site with is pleased with it. Many other topics on there as well.

This is a matter that is close to my heart.

I have read many articles, listened to audios about this topic, especially from Catholic perspective.

Incidentally, I was listening to a podcast a few hours ago and the host mentioned a book entitled Be Healed by Schuchts. He said it was really good. I read the reviews on Amazon and I’m planning on reading it. jpiihealingcenter.org/index.php/store/detail/be-healed-a-guide-to-encountering-the-powerful-love-of-jesus-in-your-life

Here are some materials that have been helpful to me:

Fully Alive! by Janice Carbon. The author talks about how to live a mature adult life from a Catholic perspective. She talks about how that we as adults should act like adults, but sometimes due to childhood experiences and other wounds, people are ‘stuck’ in a particular stage, such as childhood or adolescence.

The audio materials from the Baars Institute. baarsinstitute.com/product-category/audio/

The books from Baars Institute such as Born Only Once and Healing the Unafffirmed have also been valuable.

I also read articles from The Raphael Remedy website.

I’ve struggled with this too! What has helped me was Saint ignatius spiritual exercises and finding a support group, I hear celebrate recovery is awesome, trying that out myself tomorrow! God bless your not alone, the struggle is real but we can do it! Oh and group therapy and individual therapy helps also!
