Greetings I am gathering information for a paper for nursing school regarding different religions and how it impacts health care.

I am hoping someone here can answer my questions regarding the Catholic Churches views on the following topics. As this is a paper I am looking for historical/biblical references- I am an Episcopalian so I’m not versed in the Catholic with the BIG C, just the little c! 🙂 I know that these a sensitive issues and I appreciate the help. I’m not here to judge I am here for information!

Assisted-suicide and suicide:
Abortion:
Assisted Pregnancy/Infertility Treatments:

Thanks,
Susanna

Susana,

For Catholic teachings, you can check out the Catechism of the Catholic Church. The topics you posted would be discussed under the Fifth Commandment (assisted suicide, euthanasia, abortion) and the Sixth Commandment (assisted reproductive technology).

For a lengthier treatement of assisted reproductive technology, see these two Church documents:

Donum Vitae
Dignitas Personae

For documents on abortion:

Declaration on Procured Abortion
Humanae Vitae
Evangelium Vitae

On Euthanasia and related topics:

Evangelium Vitae
Declaration on Euthanasia
JPII address on Life-Sustaining Treatments and Vegetative State

For more extensive research, I suggest you go to the EWTN document library and do keyword searches. There are numerous other documents on these topics.

Wow,

You just got a superb bibliography in a nutshell. School was never so easy when I was in it!

I agree, I’m 34 and back in school for my 2cd degree and I cannot tell you how easy the internet has made studying. In a matter of a day from this post I was able to visit the Vatican’s webite and have the ULTIMATE in references…it would have taken me a VERY long time to get this much detail 18 years ago!!

I appreciate the help and as a person who always has questions I’m sure I’ll be back.

Thanks again for the support!:dancing:

Yeah, definitely the Catechism and the Commandments. And the Gospel shows Jesus’ compassion, which clearly indicates what He would and would not want in healthcare, like abortion, euthanasia, etc.
