I feel a bit bad coming here to ask for prayer again but I’m not sure what else to do.

I won’t be swayed but I do have a small problem.

The past few months I find myself experiencing the same baffling symptoms at Mass. These symptoms have been making it very difficult for me to focus on the homily, and to pray.

It starts with a headache, leads into dizziness and finally when I kneel to pray it feels as if I can’t breathe (as a result I cannot remain kneeling for very long at all). These symptoms start only once Mass starts and usually disappear the moment Mass has ended. The difficulty breathing persists outside of Mass whenever I attempt to kneel and pray. I ignore the symptoms and plow on through BUT I would appreciate some prayer. If only for some wisdom to figure out what the heck is causing this. I love kneeling when I pray so this is really disappointing for me (when I can’t kneel for long periods - I’m a long pray-er!).

I’m perfectly healthy btw. So this is all a bit odd.

Thank you for your prayers!!!

Prayer offered…

Question. Is incense being uesed regularly at your parish? I don’t mean for every mass, but is it used often?
You might have a sensitivity to the incense…Of course that doesn’t explain the problems at home…
But I just thought I’d mention it.

Peace
James

I know we pray the St Michael prayer after Mass (well some of us do), perhaps you should before Mass starts.

Saint Michael the Archangel,
defend us in battle.
Be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil.
May God rebuke him, we humbly pray;
and do Thou, O Prince of the Heavenly Host -
by the Divine Power of God -
cast into hell, satan and all the evil spirits,
who roam throughout the world seeking the ruin of souls.

Amen.

No incense at Mass. It was used at Midnight Mass and I didn’t seem to have any worse reaction at that time then any other (actually I really enjoyed the incense - and my headache cleared up when they used it, which was another odd little thing because you’d expect something like that to make headaches worse).

It has been suggested to me that perhaps the rug is moldy so when I kneel I get closer to that mold. It was also suggested that perhaps I have a sensitivity to the wood in the walls (we tried sitting near the center of the Church but that just created more problems because the floor actually shakes when people walk forward for the Eucharist - shaking + dizziness + kneeling = Very bad).

I think the first step will be to pop some allergy pills BEFORE Mass. And perhaps to visit another parish and see if I have similar problems.

I only have the breathing problem when I kneel properly (upright, knees on floor, hands on bench ahead of you), no other time. When I sit on my legs I’m fine (but of course that makes the legs lose circulation after a bit).

I dunno. It’s just a weird little phenonmenon that’s getting on my nerves. 🙂

I’ll try the Michael prayer, thank you.

Memorare (Prayer to Our Lady)
Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known that anyone who fled to your protection, implored your help, or sought your intercession, was left unaided.
Inspired by this confidence, I fly unto you, O Virgin of virgins, my Mother. To you do I come, before you I stand, sinful and sorrowful. O Mother of the Word Incarnate, despise not my petitions, but in your mercy, hear and answer me. Amen

When do you eat in relation to when you go to mass? If you go to a 9am mass or a later mass and are accoustomed to eating/sleeping at that time you may be mildly hypoglycemic.

ALSO

Do you drink water throughout the day? People often skip drinking water before mass and become slightly dehidrated.

Oh! I hadn’t thought about that at all! Usually I grab a piece of fruit before I go (I try to have breakfast every morning but on Sunday I sleep in a little bit since it’s my only day off work). I try not to drink too much (so maybe a few sips of water before I go) because I have a pretty weak bladder.

You guys are an awesome trouble shooting team. I’ll keep an eye on these things and take some notes. Maybe we can work this out. 🙂

Of course none of our suggestions should be taken as discounting the possibility of a spiritual attack by satan. But it’s good to seek ways to eliminate other possible sources and irritations.

In any event our thoughts and prayers are with you.

Peace

YES IT IS EXTREMELY ODD!..

Consider this my young friend;

There are ONLY TWO possible sources fo such an event: God and Satan.

If from God it is bcause He is testing you:

**Phil.2: 8 **“And being found in human form he humbled himself and became obedient unto death, even death on a cross **Luke.9 :23 **And he said to all, "If any man would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me. **Mark.8: 34 **And he called to him the multitude with his disciples, and said to them, "If any man would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. Luke.9: 23 And he said to all, "If any man would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me. **Luke.14: **7 ***Whoever does not bear his own cross and come after me, cannot be my disciple.” ***

**Phil.1: 29 **“For it has been granted to you that for the sake of Christ you should not only believe in him but also suffer for his sake, “

IF, on the other hand it is from Satan: perservere because God WINS! Given all that you [and your roommate] have accomplised recently; in your faith walk with and to Christ; Satan is one unhappy camper! :o

Increase your level of personal piety; TRY to spend time frequently with Christ in the Blesed Sacrament;[Iam aware that your work schedule makes this difficult; but difficult times call for sacrifice] and PRAY a Rosary daily dedicated to our BVM to assist you in this struggle for your soul.

Know that you DO continue in my daily thoughts and prayers,

God’s continud Blessings!
Pat

I don’t necessarily believe that there’s any room for Satan in God’s house so I really don’t think it’s a spiritual attack. Spiritual test? Maybe, who knows! But not an attack.

More then likely there is a physical reason for all of this. That’s why I need some prayer. I’m really daft at figuring out what causes physical symptoms. 🙂 So I need some supernatural wisdom. Haha!

I will take into consideration everyone’s suggestions and thank you for your prayers!!!

the first thing that comes to mind is panic attacks. Have you experienced something similar in the past in other situations?

The scond thought is some problem with the building itself, ventilation, allergens etc, for that reason alone it might be worthwhile to mention your symptoms to the priest and ask if anyone else has reported symptoms that should be investigated.

we just found the (unlikely) source of a long-standing bad odor on our campus which turned out to have nothing to do with the sewer, but affected several people, and has just been corrected. Had people not complained at the specific times the problem occured we could not have found the reason for it.

The headaches are actually fairly common for me, just not a headache that comes and goes within an hour. Usually I get headaches in the morning but they last all day, or a headache at night that lasts all night (when I get headaches they last anywhere from 5-12 hours). These headaches come only at Mass and end the moment I leave the building (so they do seem to be situational headaches). The dizziness seems to be something that happens mostly at Mass (I think everyone gets dizzy spells but usually I only get dizzy spells when I’m over tired and at work - you know, at the end of a 12 hour shift).

I only have difficulty breathing when kneeling and it’s a totally new phenomenon that’s started in just the past few months (I noticed it in Mass first and it gradually started happening at home as well). Before the breathing trouble started I would say nightly prayers on my knees that could last anywhere from a half hour to two hours with no problems at all… except legs that go to sleep of course! Now I can hardly be on my knees for a few minutes before I’m gasping for air.

I’m not sure why Mass would inspire a panic attack (or prayer for that matter)? I suppose it could just be because the rest of the week I’m so high stress and at Mass I relax so it kind of has a negative reaction (when we relax all that stress and exhaustion can settle in properly)? If that makes sense? Maybe?

Ah! So much to consider. Process of elimination is the best way. Like I said I’ll start with the allergy meds and start taking notes as to when the symptoms occur and all that. If it wasn’t so consistent (every Sunday the same symptoms) I probably wouldn’t even be here but it’s getting a bit tiring!

Time for a bullet list with all these lovely suggestions. 🙂

forgot to say, praying for you
none of the symptoms you cite should be ignored, the first place to go is to your doctor, remember we cannot give medical advice here

No worries. I have an appointment to see my doc. 🙂 I just thought prayers can’t hurt in the meantime. Around here it takes weeks to see a doctor so I have awhile to wait.

Thank you everyone. I really appreciate the prayers!

Hail Mary, full of grace.
The Lord is with thee.
Blessed art thou among women,
and blessed is the fruit of thy womb,
Jesus.
Holy Mary, Mother of God,
pray for us sinners,
now and at the hour of our death.
Amen.

PATER NOSTER,
qui es in caelis,
sanctificetur nomen tuum.
Adveniat regnum tuum.
Fiat voluntas tua, sicut in caelo et in terra.
Panem nostrum quotidianum da nobis hodie,
et dimitte nobis debita nostra
sicut et nos dimittimus debitoribus nostris.
Et ne nos inducas in tentationem,
sed libera nos a malo. Amen.

Áve María, grátia pléna, Dóminus técum. Benedícta tu in muliéribus, et benedíctus frúctus véntris túi, Iésus.
Sáncta María, Máter Déi, óra pro nóbis peccatóribus, nunc et in hóra mórtis nóstrae. Ámen.

Gloria Patri, et Filio, et Spiritui Sancto,
Sicut erat in principio, et nunc, et semper, et in saecula saeculorum. Amen.
