Health Risks of Common Communion Cup

Honestly, you’re in Mass, with all those people around you, breathing out their germs, touching the pews, perhaps even shaking their hand at the sign of peace. So, if you’re going to catch something you’ll probably do it, whether you take the cup or not. To me it’s not worth worrying about. But, that’s me. If it bothers anyone, don’t do it.

It’s the Blood of Christ and I have never, ever got sick from receiving this way and I have been receiving that way for ages.
I really have never even considered that I could get sick from receiving Him in this manner. Flu season or not, I will continue to receive in this manner. Personally I think it’s ridiclous that anyone would think that they could get sick from receiving Jesus. Just my :twocents:
I wish I could feel the same way…
I have a hangup about this which I rarely talk about.

I feel bad for choosing not too. I am torn. I feel bad passing the cup and I feel bad taking from the cup. :whacky: not a pleasant feeling…

Perhaps it’s not a hangup at all. Perhaps it’s God speaking to your heart telling you not to take the cup.

Actually I have confused feelings. God would not wish to confuse me.

exchanging the sign of peace, especially when the hand you are shaking has just been using a tissue to catch a sneeze, is a far more likely route of infection than the cup. I have not been receiving from the cup for several weeks as I am still fighting off the effects of a bad cold. I usually refrain for most of the winter months for that reason, out of consideration for others. If I do sneeze, I smile warmly and keep my hands in my pocket for the peace sign.

I do all this too…I hate this blasted cold and flu season…already had my first cold a couple weeks but recovered faster than you did.

This I do agree with, IF I were sick, sneezing, using kleenex at Mass, etc, like a runny nose or something, or if I had a cold sore or something that I could give to someone else, I wouldn’t receive the Precious Blood then, out of consideration to others. (I wouldnt want to gross anyone out or make them uncomfortable.)
I’m sorry too that I said you were ridiclous for feeling that you could get sick from receiving Jesus in this manner, (especially to you contemplative), I didn’t mean to say something so unkind, I just mean that I had never considered that I could get sick this way. I didn’t mean to hurt anyone’s feelings or make anyone uncomfortable.

Not if you are careful not to touch your face/mouth with your hands before washing them.

If there are any germs on the chalice they are coming into direct contact with your mouth. Much riskier in my opinion.

No problem of yours…
just mine…and some others…
things will work out for me…sometime or another…I will figure it out…with God’s Grace.

Contemplative, I didn’t realize how serious an issue this is for you. I’m sorry if I appeared flippant. I hope that God will give you some guidance!

Thankyou
There doesn’t seem to be anything I read or hear to change my situation.

I think the responsible thing to do is avoid the blood of Christ if you are sick, just getting over sickness, or even feeling a little “under the weather.” Keep the community in mind and pray that others do the same. 🙂

Well Feanaro’s Wife, think about this for a minute here, o.k.? If you just shook hands with someone who had a cold, and they had just sneezed into their hands, and then shook hands with you at the “sign of peace” and then you received Holy Communion in your hands, hummmm, do you really think that they are going to go wash their hands right then at that part in the Mass first? (I don’t think so.)

I pay attention to the people around me at mass. If someone sneezes into their hand during mass, I don’t shake hands with them at the time. Goes along with rubbing their nose, picking a body part, etc.

No, I obviously wouldn’t be able to go and wash my hands, but I could use a waterless hand sanitizer.

Maybe I am just tired, but I felt a bit of an antagonizing tone when I read your post. Please forgive me if that was not your intention…

I previously provided a link from the AAA forum about germs and the chalice. I think it is a valid concern of many and am only trying to point out that it is ok not to receive from the common chalice (you can reconcile your reasons with God).

I don’t know, all I know is that I got very sick in the middle of July, and I am normally robust, and I always took the chalice. I like receiving Christ blood, not only does it go well with the host, but it feels more complete. But, I was so sick…
A few months back, and it could also have been easily in the month of July, was that I became very sick with a terrible cough, sore throat, ear infection, you name it. I was told that there was some virus going around. Well, I got it alright. To prevent others from getting what I had, I stopped receiving the Blood of Christ.

Once in a great while, when there are not too many people ahead of me, I might commune from the cup. But, since Jesus is wholly present in the Host, I have no problem when I opt not to receive from the cup. However, when I pass the cup I do stop and bow my head to acknowledge Jesus’ presence.

Why would God tell him/her not to do something that Jesus commanded us to do? Is the Trinity confused?

Maybe that is why the person behind me in Mass this weekend whipped out the hand sanitizer right after the sign of peace 🙂 How did I know, I heard the purse open/close and the little snap of the cap - then that Purell hand sanitizer smell 🙂
