WHAAAAAAAAT!!!
:bigyikes: :bigyikes: :bigyikes:

That’s it … I’m going back to Mormonism. They never got involved in my personal hygiene. Oh, wait, I forgot about the long underwear - so much for that. Paganism, anyone? :whacky:

Well that’s certainly…unusual.

Speaking of bookstores, I was browsing in a Christian bookstore once and noticed that they didn’t have any Catholic books. I inquired about Catholic books at the service counter and was told “I think those sorts of things have to be ordered directly from the Church”.

In Christ,
Nancy 🙂
OMGoodness…You must have been in a Borean Bookstore!!! I scared the pants off a lady in there one night just before closing. I went in and was looking for a Catholic Bible and when I couldn’t find it I asked where they were…the lady rolled her eyes at me and said, “If we have any, they will be in the Alternative Bible Section” Well that’s all it took for me to go on a rant that totally embarassed my husband. I asked, “Where do you think your bible came from?” then I answered for her, “The Catholic Bible was the first bible that all other versions were based on. The Catholic Church was the original not the “alternative” bible publishers.” I went on and on…the lady looked so scared that I was some whacko that was going to destroy the place or something. Now, when we pass by the Borean Bookstore my kids and husband always tease me about needing an “alternative” bible. My husband can’t even bring himself to enter the store because he fears someone will recognize me as that “whacko lady” that rants about bibles. waaahaaaaaa…

Someone was debating with my mom about Catholism and he said that during the concecration of the hosts the priest waves his hand over it and says ‘hocus pocus’. At that point we believe it is changed into the Body of Christ. My mom was shocked and took him to Mass, he so fully believed this that he sat there listening carefully the whole time waiting for him to say The magic words. :rolleyes:

This is actually a very old one. “Hocus pocus” is a parody of “Hoc est Corpus (Meus)”, “This is (My) Body”, and was said by early protestants mocking the Catholic belief in transubstantiation.

I (and everyone else on an internet discussion site) recently was told by someone who claimed that he had been a faithfully practising Catholic all his life until he became an adult, that:
  • it is very common in the Midwest USA for a deacons or lay person to celebrate the Mass, consecration and everything, in place of a priest;
  • the Church forbids children being baptised unless their parents are in a valid Catholic marriage;
  • Pope Benedict flatly denies that any priest has ever sexually abused anyone;
  • many priests in the Midwest USA blatantly ignore the Church’s marriage laws and perform marriage ceremonies for divorcees whose first marriages have not been annulled;
    -the Church forbids suicides to be given the “last rites”.
The same guy insisted that when as a 12 year old he asked questions in Confirmation class such as “the ethics of the Crusaders forcibly converting Muslims”, the nun giving the class took him to the priest, who immediately phoned the bishop, who then immediately told the boy over the phone that he would “issue a writ of excommunication” against him if he didn’t stop asking questions! And then the guy got all indignant when I doubted this story!

Another poster insisted that the Church pays massive salaries to priests and pays slave-wages to its other employees.

The strangest one I’ve ever heard is, “Do Catholics have to shave their pubic hair?”
I still laugh when I think of that one.
Yea! I was asked that question, too, by an Air Force OB-GYN. He was trying to persuade me to start using birth control pills, and I was explaining to him how NFP worked.

Not really a “new” one, but the one that always gets to me is the people who say “sorry but you’ll be SHOCKED when you hear this”, preceding a story about someone say getting drunk or fornicating. They seem to seriously believe that the only reason anyone could possibly remain a Catholic is that they have no experience of anything else and aren’t even aware of any alternative belief.

Another one is that the Pope can and does make up any new doctrine or moral rule he feels like. Parts of our secular media here quite seriously canvassed the possibility that the cardinals might elect a Pope who would say that contraception and even abortion are OK, and that the only reason they didn’t is that they basically hate women, homosexuals, young people, and the idea of anyone enjoying themselves.

The biggest piece of ignorant Christian fruitcake I’ve choked on lately is that the Catholic Church rejected true Christianity and co-opted Babylonian Mystery Religions:
  • Easter (aka Pascha in every language except English and German) is a pagan holiday celebrating the goddess Ishtar,
  • Epiphany is an ancient fertility festival.
  • The Virgin Mary was none other than Artemis or Diana of Ephesus that Paul so boldly opposed. Her position as Queen of Heaven was superimposed on the Syrian goddess Tammuz.
And all this is PROOF that the Catholic Church apostatized in the 3rd or 4th century.

Here are some samples. Enjoy - if you don’t wind up choking, too! :rotfl:

Steven Merten:
Hello Catholic4areason,

I was at a party one time. In Wisconsin of all places (go Packers). Anyway they were trying to remember the ten commandments. The group effort had come up with three or four. It was funny but sad. I stated the ten commandments for them.

Afterward, a woman came up to me and started preaching to me as to how I really did not know ALL the commandments. She told me, “What good was it to follow some of the commandments when you don’t really know ALL the commandments.” I looked at her in great surprise and asked, “What are you talking about?” She replied, “Well, when Moses came down the moutain, he droped one of the stone tablets and it broke. There were really fifteen commandments but five were lost when Moses droped one of the stone tablets. Its all right there in the bible.” She meant it in all sinsarity.

I responed, “You have been watching too many Mel Brooks movies.”
Ohh… there wern’t fifteen. Well there goes my doctrate in theology thesis. :rotfl:

Well, apparently the use of pine cones in any Catholic art makes us pagans:

Well now this would certainly explain why the decor in my home is “woodsy” and I have pine cones all over the place!! All this time I thought it was just my personal preference. :rotfl:

That is just TOO much!!! 😃

In Christ,
Nancy 🙂

I didn’t know that! It makes more sense now why he thought. Thanks 🙂

The Blessed Mother is the godess Isis.

Uh huh. According to the little booklet she must be the goddess Isis because she looks like her…right…well…I look a tad bit like the Pillsbury Dough Boy, however, I am not him.

IHS really stands for Isis Horus, and Rhea.

Or it could stand for “Idiots Here Speak”. Or maybe it’s a Greek form of Christ. Hmmm…

Thank you Jack Chick for those deee-lightful interprtations of Catholic beliefs. And don’t forget, that Bible you’re thumping, came from us! 😃

At one of our first RCIA classes this year we had just finished a rather lengthy discussion on St. Paul, his travels, and his writings, when one of the inquirers said “Wow, I didn’t know Catholics even believed in the bible.” 🙂

I used to work at a Christian bookstore. One night we got a call from a lady wanting to know how to baptize her cat. She was serious too.
A priest told me recently that someone asked him to say a Mass for their dog who had just died

I didn’t actually “hear” this idea as much as read it on the internet: that pope JPII was showing the world his connection to the occult/paganism by being buried in a trapezoidal coffin. I thought this was just a little too much.

I got a good one!! My friend who is Baptist-- mentioned to me that, did I know they found a lot of babies buried under the Rome church which were from the nuns having babies by the priests & then burying them ( I guess they killed them b/c they are not supposed to have sex) All I could do was sit there & look at her, I thought oboy her preacher has been talking about the Catholics again! I told her, that ‘story’ has been around since I was in grade school in Washinton about the monestary 40 years ago!!! She didn’t know what to say, she thought it was a new bit of info on the Catholics!!

I really like this forum.
Ignorance is really something isn’t it!!!

Wow, guess we should restrict ourselves to using only modern materials such as plastics and styrofoam. Surely all those good, non-Pagan Fundamentalist churches out there don’t use wood or iron or plaster in any part of their churches or their homes. :rotfl:

I went to that site. What is it?? That is really sad that the people on that site are so ignorant. They sure need a lot of prayer, I will say a Rosary for them at Adoration. They sure sound like they are possessed. That’s truly sad. I would say that they take the cake when it comes to misconceptions about the Catholic Church. Everything they said about us is a misconception.

I suppose this really isn’t a new one, but there is a common idea that Catholics can’t really love God. I had many Protestant friends, and I didn’t hide my Catholicism, but I didn’t advertise it, either. When they found out I was a Catholic, they asked, “Really? We thought that they weren’t on fire for God.” I told them that just as in other churches, some members are more committed than others, but they were shocked to find out that Catholics might actually care about God!
Apparently we also believe that unless your good deeds outweigh your bad deeds, you go straight to hell.
I’ve heard lots of others, but they’re all old.

Maybe this should be classed as just “pig-ignorance” instead of a misconception, but I overheard a non-practising Protestant in his 20s, who had been to Sunday school etc, ask “Is it the Catholics or the Jews who don’t believe in Jesus?”

One which was newly discovered by me recently was “Catholics have to believe that no Pope has ever committed a sin.”
