how do we decipher from God own voice or My own mind?

Historically, God has always made it clear when He wants to communicate with us. I think if He really had a message for one of us there would be no mistaking it.

God has never spoken to me so I wouldn’t have a clue

I believe The lord Does speak to us ALL the time, even in ‘our heads’ at times. However He may not speak with an audible voice, but usually in quietude, with a gentle nudge at times, a whisper here, a tiny inspiration or an interior grace or even a 'mini-vision. It is up to ‘us’ to listen, recognize and act accordinly to His voice or interior directions. That doesn’t mean that The Lord can’t or won’t smack us along our 'deaf ears, but He usually does not, but waits for ‘us’ to have open hearts and souls for which to discern and be open to His voice. A few of the great prophets have heard The Lord’s voice and have been open to His voice.

To deffrentiate between being mentally unsound and ‘not off track,’ I guess one could use the Ten Commandments and the Beatitudes as a guide, speak to your priest or a Dr. for and off mental health. Any way you look at it someone is bound to say, "Wait…whaaat!’ so I guess one should approach this subject with a little caution. I hope I didn’t open up a can of worms her.Peace

Are you sure The Lord has not whispered in your ear and spoken to you in various ways? If you are ‘here’ I believe you missed His e-mail to you. Check again. You may find it in your ‘junk box but it is there ‘somewhere.’ Peace.’

I would say that anyone who is hearing voices should first seek medical help to either confirm or dismiss anything physical or mental causing this.
Jumping directly to a conclusion that it must be or even might be a message from God is too far reaching from the get go!

All of us,or most of us have some internal chatter, our own thoughts and sort of dialogue going on in our heads.
When I was very young I was excited realising I could
kind of recreate my mother’s voice in my head “Greenfields!Pick up those socks please” and I had a chuckle that I could hear her voice in my head ,kind of create it .I was about 4 years old. I know when my mother has passed on to the next life I will be able to recreate her voice when ever I wish.
It could be easy to imagine how Jesus spoke and add that to our inner dialogue, but that’s where you have to be a bit careful.
I would think that if ever I hear the voice of God in my mind for real,I would have no doubt. It wouldn’t be a figment of my imagination but a clear voice that would make my very being come to awed attention.
I think it’s fine to be talking with Jesus ,running thoughts by Him often talking to Him as your best friend in your heart ,that is prayer.

I have a lot of “internal chatter”, but I can’t really attribute any of it to God. That said, occasionally (for one example) I might type out a response to something on Facebook (or on this forum), and then get an inkling that maybe I shouldn’t really say that. So I erase it and go on about my business.

To allow a little peak into my own soul, I’m not really happy with where I am at this point in my life. However, there have been many times in my past when I thought that I’ve heard the “voice of God” to go somewhere else, do something else, etc., but it has turned out to be my own imagination. So currently one of my regular prayers to the Father is that I will go anywhere that He says go, do anything that He says do, and change anything that He says change, only the message has to be clear unequivocal, and not subject to misinterpretation, and I have to know without doubt that it is He that is speaking to me. In the absence of any such messages, I’m staying right where I am.

You know what it feels like when you think something vs when you hear something? Like that except without the whole ear part. Or similar, from what I have heard been explained before

Is it fruitful for your soul?
That’s the difference.
Discern what your selfish will is first, or wishful thinking, or justification.
God does not operate in that way.
Holy thoughts are holy.

Mark virkler. 4 keys to hearing god is a method that many have found successful.

And yes. Hearing a spiritual revelation. A spiritual word. A vision .a thought is what will happen.

John Paul Jackson . has a teaching on the difference titled.
Prophets and psychics.

That’s inspiration, not prophecy.
Christ is the fulfillment of all prophecy.

Many people hold that a well formed conscience is in fact the Voice of the Holy Ghost.

Sometimes whisper in 3-00, 4-00 in the morning call to prayer.
The unique ability to hear the voice of God is a very necessary ability for everyone, after all, our biggest problem is the inability to hear the Voice of God, but it seems to me that everything should be checked with God’s Wisdom and Scripture, Catechism, our conscience…

I’ve found that the voice of God springs up from the heart. The thing about God, He’s hard to argue with.

The voices I hear in my head aren’t to be trusted. Usually they’re negative any way. Stuff like ‘you’re not good enough’ or ‘you’ll never make it’. That kind of thing.

When it come to locutions (spiritual voices) you need spiritual direction.

Basically in during prayer a clear thought, or a message from the heart, or a unique voice.

It can be the Holy Spirit, an Angel, or a demon. It also can come from multiple sources sometimes angel sometimes demon from what I read.

Basically if you or anyone you know has that gift then it is like being opened to a new level.

I know someone with locutions and they have to pray on it for a few days and double check it with direction since they can have several voices appear.

Otherwise as far as thoughts go the desert monks who followed St. Anthony of the Desert spoke of how ones thoughts are a mixture. Some are yours some are spiritual.

If you wish to start to learn art of discern your thought my priest recommended to me Heaven Begins Within You by Aslem Gruen. It takes time and one has to think of your mind as a house. Stop letting every thought in and accepting it rather stop each thought at your door and compare it with scripture, church teachings, and also take them to spiritual direction (a good monk or mystic helps).

Peace

people believe they hear the voice of God, they are skipping their meds.
I hope you aren’t Christian then.

That is a 100% unacceptable position for a Christian to take. It renders the Prophets as nothing more than headcases, not prophets.

I like this topic. But I have not read through it as yet.

I would say that God “speaks” to us in many different ways in answer to our prayers and showing us his will for our lives.

Actually hearing a voice of sorts is very rare. Mother Teresa had an interior locution like this once or twice in her life time. And she had a special mission given to her from Jesus.

But God speaks interiorly to us in more subtle ways by bringing things to our minds, and I think he does shape our thoughts during prayer sometimes.

Hearing voices though is something that requires a spiritual director, I would say. The risk for self delusion can be very high in such matters.
