Looking through pictures of Pope Benedict XVI’s mass at Nationals’ Stadium in Washington, D.C., I saw something in a picture of some Eastern Catholic Bishops processing in. Among the eastern bishops, one was wearing what looked like a cross between a Latin and an Eastern mitre, shaped like a heart.

It has a cross on top, so I know it is Eastern, and the bishop appears to be wearing the vestments of one of the syrian rites, rather than the byzantine-rite bishops ahead of him in the procession.

So, i’m hoping someone on this forum can tell me what rite he belongs to, whether all the mitres of that rite are shaped that way or he just has a particularily fun-looking one, and just maaaaybe, if i’m lucky, who that bishop is.

Anyone?

I’m no expert in such matters, but Irish Melkite (one of the moderators at ByzCath) has said that it’s His Grace Mar Jacob Angadiath of the Eparchy of St Thomas of the Syro-Malabars in Chicago. That style of mitre is the common usage for the Malabarese.

You can see a photo here of Mar Jacob with His Eminence Major-Archbishop Mar Varkey Cardinal Vithayathil, the primatial hierarch of the Malabarese. His Eminence is the one in the red heart-shaped mitre and a check of photos of the prayers of the Eastern & Oriental Catholic hierarchs at Pope John Paul’s funeral will show His Eminence there, vested in the same headgear.

Hope that helps.
-Peter.
