Heaven and earth shall pass away?

i recently read an article with pope francis who said that all things shall pass away espiecally heaven and earth, i know its in the bible as jesus said this, but what does this mean, i thought heaven was the eternal home for us ? is there something else, dont we have life eternal?

Heaven has at least two meanings; the physical “sky,” and the spiritual Heaven.

The Spiritual Heaven is eternal; the physical sky is not.

2 Cor. 12: 2 I know a man in Christ above fourteen years ago (whether in the body, I know not, or out of the body, I know not; God knoweth), such a one caught up to the third heaven.

There is also heaven’t heaven, the third heaven, where God dwels. See: Deuteronomy 10:14; 1 Kings 8:27; Psalms 115:16; 148:4.
 
Is it not true (in scripture) that there will be a “new heaven and a new earth” or something similar, and that Jesus will reign on the earth?
I distinctly recall reading that in the bible, and I thought that was the whole point in the second coming of Christ: to establish an actual kingdom.

i am still very confusedd and i dont have the time to read the catechism right now, the second coming means a new world and kingdom is this right? so is heaven then a temporary place where everyone goes until this is complete? and a third heaven? never heard that one before?
 
Heaven really is God himself-the Beatific vision.
Its better to think along those lines rather than a place in the clouds.
However, what will happen at the end of the world is that Jesus will come down with all his saints and renew the entire Universe. Then after the resurrection of all the dead, the saved will take possession of the new renewed earth. So yes, we will all (God willing) live on this earth again forever with the Most Holy Trinity. In a sense the world doesnt actually “end” rather it is divinized and transformed into a new Garden of Eden on a universal scale. The entire creation will share in this new eternal life-so that includes animals.

2 Peter 3:10

10 But the day of the Lord shall come as a thief, in which the heavens shall pass away with great violence, and the elements shall be melted with heat, and the earth and the works which are in it, shall be burnt up.
 
this makes no sense, i was always taught that the dead were in a place of limbo in order to get judged, how does that equate to going to heaven at the end, that makes no sense, eternal salvation should be eternal and one place, the new heaven and new earth thing makes no sense to me sorry

The particular judgement occurs at death of the body, and the final judgement, called the Parousia (the second coming), in the end. Hell or heaven are determined at the particular judgement.

There is also that verse that says the nations will try to make war on the Christ when he returns so Im not sure how any of this could happen if the physical world was destroyed right away.

Its likely things will not be happening in the version of time we now live in though.

Well “when he returns” seems inaccurate, rather it would be before he returns.

The Catholic teaching is that Christ will return to the Kingdom of Heaven, the New Jerusalem. We already have the Kingdom of heaven on earth.

Lumen Gentium (1964) Excerpt

To carry out the will of the Father, Christ inaugurated the Kingdom of heaven on earth and revealed to us the mystery of that kingdom. By His obedience He brought about redemption. The Church, or, in other words, the kingdom of Christ now present in mystery, grows visibly through the power of God in the world. This inauguration and this growth are both symbolized by the blood and water which flowed from the open side of a crucified Jesus,(5) and are foretold in the words of the Lord referring to His death on the Cross: “And I, if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw all things to myself”.(6)

Catechism on destiny of the material world and man.

1046 For the cosmos, Revelation affirms the profound common destiny of the material world and man:

For the creation waits with eager longing for the revealing of the sons of God . . . in hope because the creation itself will be set free from its bondage to decay. . . . We know that the whole creation has been groaning in travail together until now; and not only the creation, but we ourselves, who have the first fruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait for adoption as sons, the redemption of our bodies.639

1047 The visible universe, then, is itself destined to be transformed, “so that the world itself, restored to its original state, facing no further obstacles, should be at the service of the just,” sharing their glorification in the risen Jesus Christ.640
