Dear Friends,
My dear husband is not a Christian, and tells me he has no real belief, that he will find out when he dies.
He is a good, generous and kind man, and deeply loves me, and our family and friends.
He is in all ways what a good christian should be, however without the aspect of faith.
He was brought up in a totally secular household, with no religious instruction, and was never baptised as a baby.
He would not undertake to be baptised now, as he would consider this to be irreverent. As far as he is concerned this would be fine if you believe, but not if you have no faith. He would view it as an act of hypocrisy, being an unbeliever, purely to satisy my concerns.
It is not that he does not believe, (hence I say he is an unbeliever, as opposed to a non believer) rather that he is yet to discover, what “it” is all about.
We married before my conversion to the catholic faith, in the Church of England, which did not require him to be baptised.
I was brought up in the c of e, and was baptised, attended sunday school and a c of e school but did not get confirmed.
This was a choice my parents left me to make myself.
My husband did not have the benefit of even this meagre spriritual direction.
He is however fully supportive of my faith journey, although professes to have no interest in it for himself.
I pray often for him, that he will find God in his heart, and yet, I know that God is truly in him, as he is a good man.
This is a question that has bothered me since I began my own journey into faith, as I would be heartbroken to find that heaven would hold no place for him, simply because his family failed to have him baptised!
Would he not therefore be like one who has never had the wonderful experience of knowing God, rather than one who has turned his back on Our Lord?
I try to let him have “snippets” of Jesus - which in the main he often accepts ( I think!)
I would be so grateful if some one could please answer the question of what would happen to him when he dies. I have asked my priest, and I am not sure that I fully understood his answer. I just hope that I have not chosen NOT to understand, if I do not like the answer.
This has kept me awake many nights, and I have come to the belief in my heart that Jesus would not turn against someone who was good, even if they have not had the wonderful benefit of our faith.
I hope I am right, even though the catechism seems to say different, but then again, I am new to the faith, and you are experts.
May God bless you, and perhaps you will pray for my husband, that he will find God in his heart.
Much love in Christ our Saviour.
Sue
