I believe we Catholics should give all of our attention to Heavenly Father, and quit talking so much about what the pope in Rome is saying, has said, is doing, has done.

The pope in Rome is just a man. The pope in Rome we can even say is a sinner, since Holy Scripture says “all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God.” (Romans 3:23).

The words “pope” has the same root word as “papa,” and really just means “father.”

We have a Father in Heaven, the first person of the Holy Triune God.

It is our Father in Heaven we should be talking about and thinking about all the time. It is our Father in Heaven we need to listen to, obey, and love with our whole heart and mind and soul.

Why? Because that’s exactly** what Jesus did**, as can be seen in the four Gospels. Jesus was constantly talking to His and our Heavenly Father, and was constantly talking about his and our Heavenly Father. Jesus proclaimed over and over again that his mission on earth was to glorify the Name of His and our Heavenly Father.

Right now I am listening to EWTN radio. Then are interviewing a man who has written a book called “Benedict of Bavaria.”’ They were discussing what Pope Benedict’s favorite opera is. I say: Who cares?! Why are such things even being discussed? Oh, now the author just said that when Pope Benedict was in seminary he was smarter than all of his professors! Really? Even if he was, so what? He is still just a man.

In most of the history of the Church, average Catholics paid very little attention to the pope. Most did not even know the name of the pope.

I believe all this intense focus on the pope is very harmful.

First, it takes away time that could be spent on talking about our Heavenly Father, who is the “pope” (father) that REALLY matters.

Secondly, all this attention on a mere human being (the earthly pope, the vicar of Christ), comes close to being cult-like and idolatrous.
I am the first who needs to repent! I have spent so much time talking about popes!

We should not hate or disrespect the Vicar of Christ. But, he is, after all, just a vicar. Vicar just means he is a servant of God, essentially just like you and me. The pope is not God or Christ. I repeat: according to standard Catholic theology, popes can sin, and can sin badly. Let us pray for popes, but stop treating them like they are the Messiah. They are not! ****We have a God! We have a Messiah! **** The pope is neither!

Catholics, let us talk about, think about, and listen to, and obey our glorious Heavenly Father!

(Humbly submitted for consideration, for the Glory of God and the salvation of souls. If I am wrong, may God forgive me, and may you forgive me.)

Last time I was at Mass, we were not worshiping the Holy Father, Pope Benedict…so…I think you are way off base.

In fact, I think that I may report your post.

God bless.

The man that sits in the Chair of Peter has been given the "keys’ to the kingdom of heaven. We must listen to what he has said and what he is doing.

A man with an incredible responsibility. A man who has been chosen by the Holy Spirit to lead His Church.

Not true

No one prays to the Pope or adores the Pope. They recognize that he has been honored by God Himself to be the Vicar of Christ.
We should not hate or disrespect the Vicar of Christ. But, he is, after all, just a vicar. Vicar just means he is a servant of God, essentially just like you and me.
Not like you or me. He has been commanded by God to feed His sheep.

Obey our glorious Heavenly Father by listening to the Pope who has been given the power by God to bind and to loose.

You are wrong but we forgive you.

I find your post to be very polite and respectful, and I thank you for that. But you are indeed entirely wrong.

Perhaps the primary error in your thinking is your idea that loving the Pope is opposed to loving God, as if you can only love so much, and the Pope might be taking up too much of that love.

I love all the priests I know, even as mere aquaintences, becaue they bring me the Holy Sacrifice of Mass and Pennance–God works through them. All told, I probably love my Bishop more, even though he live forty miles away–because he ordains the priests who bring me those things.

I love the Pope perhaps even more than the Bishop because the Pope is the visible sign of unity in the Church, and becuase He was chosen by the Holy Spirit, and becuase God speaks through him in a special way: namely, the Holy Spirit will not allow him to lead us into error in matters of faith or morals. So long ago, when I was still using birth control, I could look to the Pope and say “Oh, he condemns using bc. That means God condemns using bc, so I know it is to be avoided.” Or when the question came up as to whether it was permissable to drink, we could look at the CCC or some document promulgated by a pope and say “Oh, so it is permissable to drink moderately.”

Love is not a zero sum game. There is not only NOT a limit to the amount of love we can give, but LOVING ONE PERSON DEEPLY HELPS US LOVE OTHERS DEEPLY. I guess you could say love begets love.

Of course there are many other reasons to love my Priests, Bishop, and Pope; for one, they are holy and lovable men. But that, I think, falls outside our discussion.

To recap: I love the Pope because he brings us word from God, and because he ordains the Bishops; and I love my Bishop because he ordains the men who bring us, well, God–Christ in the Eucharist. And who exactly is the source and the summit of this love for Priest, Bishop, and Pope?

God.

Heavenly Father versus Holy Father?
As if the relationship between God the Father and the Holy Father is ADVERSARIAL?

I have to wonder why some people call themselves Catholic.

Jesus could not stop talking about his Father, his Abba, his Papa, and our Father, our Abba, our Papa. Practically speaking, Jesus spoke about almost nothing and no one else but his beloved Heavenly Father. Here are just a few of the quotations of Him doing so:

John 12:28
Father, glorify your name!"
John 16:25

"Though I have been speaking figuratively, a time is coming when I will no longer use this kind of language but will tell you plainly about my Father.

Matthew 6:9
"This, then, is how you should pray: " 'Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name,

Matthew 10:32
"Whoever acknowledges me before men, I will also acknowledge him before my Father in heaven

Matthew 11:25
At that time Jesus said, "I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and learned, and revealed them to little children.

Matthew 11:26
Yes, Father, for this was your good pleasure.

Matthew 11:27
"All things have been committed to me by my Father. No one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.

Matthew 12:50
For whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother."

Matthew 15:13
He replied, "Every plant that my heavenly Father has not planted will be pulled up by the roots.

Matthew 16:17
Jesus replied, "Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for this was not revealed to you by man, but by my Father in heaven.

Matthew 18:10 "See that you do not look down on one of these little ones. For I tell you that their angels in heaven always see the face of my Father in heaven.

Matthew 18:14 In the same way your Father in heaven is not willing that any of these little ones should be lost.

Matthew 18:19
"Again, I tell you that if two of you on earth agree about anything you ask for, it will be done for you by my Father in heaven.

Matthew 18:35
“This is how my heavenly Father will treat each of you unless you forgive your brother from your heart.”

Matthew 20:23
Jesus said to them, “You will indeed drink from my cup, but to sit at my right or left is not for me to grant. These places belong to those for whom they have been prepared by my Father.”

Matthew 23:9
And do not call anyone on earth ‘father,’ for you have one Father, and he is in heaven.

Matthew 24:36
"No one knows about that day or hour, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father.

Matthew 25:34
"Then the King will say to those on his right, 'Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world.

Matthew 26:39
Going a little farther, he fell with his face to the ground and prayed, “My Father, if it is possible, may this cup be taken from me. Yet not as I will, but as you will.”

Matthew 26:42
He went away a second time and prayed, “My Father, if it is not possible for this cup to be taken away unless I drink it, may your will be done.”

Matthew 26:53
Do you think I cannot call on my Father, and he will at once put at my disposal more than twelve legions of angels?

Luke 6:36
Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful.

Luke 10:21
At that time Jesus, full of joy through the Holy Spirit, said, "I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and learned, and revealed them to little children. Yes, Father, for this was your good pleasure.

Luke 12:30
For the pagan world runs after all such things, and your Father knows that you need them.

Luke 12:32
"Do not be afraid, little flock, for your Father has been pleased to give you the kingdom.

Luke 22:29
And I confer on you a kingdom, just as my Father conferred one on me,

John 5:17
Jesus said to them, “My Father is always at his work to this very day, and I, too, am working.”

John 5:18
For this reason the Jews tried all the harder to kill him; not only was he breaking the Sabbath, but he was even calling God his own Father, making himself equal with God.

John 5:19
Jesus gave them this answer: "I tell you the truth, the Son can do nothing by himself; he can do only what he sees his Father doing, because whatever the Father does the Son also does.

John 5:20
For the Father loves the Son and shows him all he does. Yes, to your amazement he will show him even greater things than these.

John 5:21
For just as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, even so the Son gives life to whom he is pleased to give it.

John 5:22
Moreover, the Father judges no one, but has entrusted all judgment to the Son,

John 5:23
that all may honor the Son just as they honor the Father. He who does not honor the Son does not honor the Father, who sent him.

John 5:26
For as the Father has life in himself, so he has granted the Son to have life in himself.

John 5:36
"I have testimony weightier than that of John. For the very work that the Father has given me to finish, and which I am doing, testifies that the Father has sent me.

John 5:37
And the Father who sent me has himself testified concerning me. You have never heard his voice nor seen his form,

John 5:45
"But do not think I will accuse you before the Father. Your accuser is Moses, on whom your hopes are set.

John 6:27
Do not work for food that spoils, but for food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you. On him God the Father has placed his seal of approval."

All that the Father gives me will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never drive away.

John 6:44
"No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him, and I will raise him up at the last day.

John 6:45
It is written in the Prophets: ‘They will all be taught by God.’ Everyone who listens to the Father and learns from him comes to me.

John 6:46
No one has seen the Father except the one who is from God; only he has seen the Father.

John 6:57
Just as the living Father sent me and I live because of the Father, so the one who feeds on me will live because of me.

John 6:65
He went on to say, “This is why I told you that no one can come to me unless the Father has enabled him.”

John 8:16
But if I do judge, my decisions are right, because I am not alone. I stand with the Father, who sent me.

John 14:8
Philip said, “Lord, show us the Father and that will be enough for us.”

John 14:9
Jesus answered: "Don’t you know me, Philip, even after I have been among you such a long time? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’?

John 14:10
Don’t you believe that I am in the Father, and that the Father is in me? The words I say to you are not just my own. Rather, it is the Father, living in me, who is doing his work.

John 14:12
I tell you the truth, anyone who has faith in me will do what I have been doing. He will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father.

John 14:13
And I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Son may bring glory to the Father.

And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Counselor to be with you forever—

John 14:20
On that day you will realize that I am in my Father, and you are in me, and I am in you.

John 14:28
"You heard me say, ‘I am going away and I am coming back to you.’ If you loved me, you would be glad that I am going to the Father, for the Father is greater than I.

John 15:1
"I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener.

John 15:9
"As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Now remain in my love.

John 15:23
He who hates me hates my Father as well.

John 16:15
All that belongs to the Father is mine. That is why I said the Spirit will take from what is mine and make it known to you.

John 16:17
Some of his disciples said to one another, “What does he mean by saying, ‘In a little while you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me,’ and ‘Because I am going to the Father’?”

John 16:23
In that day you will no longer ask me anything. I tell you the truth, my Father will give you whatever you ask in my name.

John 17:2
"Father, the time has come. Glorify your Son, that your Son may glorify you. For you granted him authority over all people that he might give eternal life to all those you have given him.

John 14:8
Philip said, “Lord, show us the Father and that will be enough for us.”

John 14:10
Don’t you believe that I am in the Father, and that the Father is in me? The words I say to you are not just my own. Rather, it is the Father, living in me, who is doing his work.

You can quote the entire Bible but you are still wrong.

If you’re Catholic, I’m a frog.

If you are Catholic, you really, really need to understand your faith and stop listening to Protestants (hint, they came later, and are not Catholic. Thus they are very, very bad at explaining Christian, especially Catholic, theology).

You sound just like the protestants i deal with at www.faithfreaks.com, their belief is that we consider the pope to be the head of our church. Our catholic instruction manual called the ‘Catechism of the Catholic Church’ (which i suggest you read) strictly says ‘Christ is the head of the body, the Church. He is the principle of creation and redemption. Raised to the Fathers glory, especially in the Church, through whom he extends his reign over all things’

To me the pope is very important, if he wasnt there to oversee that all the Catholic Churches around the world uphold the SAME Catholic teachings, then every church would be like a protestant, interpreting scriptures and twisting words to support their own misinterpreted views.

Very Protestant thinking…Either/Or…

I don’t think the OP is Catholic at all.

I think one thing that our friend has failed to recognize is that the pope is The Vicar of Christ on Earth. We do not worship the pope. He is our Vicar chosen by the Holy Spirit to lead us, through Jesus, to the Father. Thus the circle is complete. He is chosen by the Holy Spirit, to lead us to the Father through Jesus Christ, our Lord, Savior and Redeemer. Nothing more, nothing less. I too question his motives for such a post. If he is Catholic, he is a very ill informed Catholic and getting his information about our relationship with the Holy Father from non Catholic sources.

So Jesus talked to and about his father constantly? I would imagine he talked to Peter fairly often too. Maybe even more frequently. Pope Peter that is. I have to believe that the Gospels captured only a minute part of what Jesus said and did each day. The high points so to speak.

Isaac, don’t you think you should stop posting and concentrate more on talking to God? Or is your judgemental attitude just for us and the pope?

Isaac’s positioning of God the Father in opposition to the Pope is flawed in itself.
If he is Catholic, he should realize that beyond any doubt.
