OP, based on what you’ve said (the bad themes don’t tempt you; you’re listening for the music, not the lyrics), I’m not seeing a problem.

I’ve been a metalhead for 30 years (mostly into power/prog/symphonic now). When I became Catholic, I ended up drifting away from some of the metal of my younger years, just because the themes weren’t conducive to my spiritual growth. I think each one of us has to discern that based on our personality. But I see no red flags for you, based on what you’ve said so far.

The lead singer of Slayer is a devoted Catholic. If the founding member the most influential metal groups around can remain Catholic, you’ll be fine.

Don’t think about the headline grabbing antics of groups like Ghost, they’re just doing it for publicity.

I am partial to a bit of heavy metal. Probably wouldn’t recommend most of it during mass though.

To be fair most popular music genres don’t tend to have lyrics that fit with Catholic teaching, I don’t think metal is especially bad.

Ghost is horrible. The lead singer who is basically styled after a satanic version of the pope, treats his band members like garbage.

I want to discuss this, so please be kind to my understanding. Is it not quite clear what music is good for the soul and what is at best a challenge… I see most modern music including metal challenging. I await the onslaught 🙂

What is a “challenge” for one person might not be a “challenge” for the other.

If you don’t want to listen to “most modern music” because you feel it causes you to sin, then you can simply avoid it, while accepting that it does not motivate everyone else in the same way and letting others set their own boundaries.

It’s the same for reading books, looking at artwork, watching movies, etc.

I personally think many forms of “modern” music (as you call it) are simply people using their God-given talents and those of us who enjoy those forms of music can appreciate their talent and be happy that God gave us the opportunity to hear and enjoy it and even thoughtfully contemplate it in many cases. YMMV

Okay, I have to post this song. Notice the Roman collar on the keyboardist/grunt vocalist. 😜

The lyrics are not in English.

I’m a Catholic and I’m a bit of a rocker. Was just listening to Sevendust (Alternative Metal band). I think we should be more worried about the content than the type of music. That said, I avoid most death metal and black metal entirely. I simply don’t like death metal, and black metal usually leans anti Christian.

I love sevendust, I was just listening to their first album the other day

It’s their best album! For nostalgia reasons, I think Home is a very close second.

that and their music is garbage, anyways. people say they are getting worse and worse, lol. i think they aren’t metal, but are just satanic alt rock. just putting that out there for catholic/ christian people who are curious. do not waste yer time.

there are a couple christian black metal bands ☺️. it’s actually called unblack metal (rebeling against what traditional black metal stands for). i think one band is called horde, but i could be wrong.

Som times it’s called white metal too, I know about it, I just don’t like it. if you like it, and it’s not something that’s going to harm your faith, then by all means listen to it

There’s an outrageously good and catchy metal band called Powerwolf. I bring them up because: 1. I enjoy their music and the technicality of their Romanian opera-trained singer and 2. the content of their songs and even the inspiration of their musical choices is outright sacrilege. So in some cases it’s a larger discussion about how much we should tolerate of media that is an attack on us (e.g. South Park)… I don’t think I have an answer.

I do believe there is music that does more harm than good, regardless. Cradle of Filth comes to mind.
And this is a special meditation that I use during Lent
That’s an awful lot of treble! 😛
