This thread is now over 8 years old. It just keeps coming back.
Prior to two days ago I never heard the term âscreamoâ. According to Wikipedia, âscreamo essentially describes a particularly dissonant style of emo influenced by hardcore punk.âMy step-son used to listen to christian screamo music. So I know it exists
This right here. At first the beats and the âfeelâ might make you groove in your seat, but I find what I find striking is that once I listen to the lyrics Iâm often disappointed in them. Not because theyâre badly written, if they are thatâs besides the point, but because the message the song gets out. I use to listen to a lot of Lady Gaga, but until I looked up the lyrics and listened to them I found many songs being dismissed from my playlist. Do you like the song âImagineâ by John Lennon? Yea, at first I was like âThis is a good message, a good song, totally deserving of its legendary statusâ then I actually listened to the lyrics, gained some context and perspective, and I ultimately decided it was just a mass heap of over hyped BS. Lennon was a child in a manâs body when he sang that song.I would say that listening to bands like Slipknot or Deicide (which means God-kill) is sinful if you are aware of the message.
I love a great majority of metal bands out there. I love metal for the instruments. The instruments always come first, especially when I am listening to hardcore evil music. I ignore the lyrics, but sometimes they are hard to ignore. It is hard when listening to bands like Amon Amarth and other viking metal bands not to think âHey, these norse (false) gods sound pretty cool!â My main thing when talking to Catholics who are worried about heavy metal is why do you like it? Like I said I like metal because of the way that the instruments blend together. It wakes me up in a way. It gets me motivated. Or if I am listening to something like dragonforce, the vocals that take you on an epic, non-religious journey are very motivating. It is only when I delved into black metal and bands like Ghost that I began to find that I was having thoughts that I had never had before. So, I guess what I am saying is, what are you getting from metal? Are you turning to Satan because of the lyrics? Or do you simply like the way that it sounds?listen to a lot of metalâŚ
Opeth
Amon Amarth
Iced Earth
Mastodon
In Flames
I was wondering, after listening to a nun, Is heavy metal a sin or wrong to listen to, does it ever become a mortal sin?..
What if the lyrics are less then godly in certain songs, is it still a sin to listen to it yet ignore the lyrics(I do only mean one or two songs)?
Can some one explain the whole view???
I think you realize that the majority of heavy metal musicians are all DADS by now and in some cases even GRANDPARENTS, right? The Big 4 (Anthrax, Metallica, Megadeth, and Slayer) are all in their 50âs and 60âs by now â Ozzy Osbourne (whoâs also also a dad), probably even older than them â which pretty much precludes the notion that heavy metal is mostly snotty little kids who wonât get off your lawn. They own a lot of those lawnsâŚI love a great majority of metal bands out there. I love metal for the instruments. But this thread has a long, proud history of being resurrected after a couple years of inactivity.Hey guys, I love heavy metal too, but weâre not supposed to resurrect old threads. Make a new one and Iâll be happy to discuss.
It is true there are hevey metal bands that have christian members. You point out Megadeth but its also important to note they werenât always christian. I remember reading they will not play some of their own songs now, I think âThe Conjuringâ is one such song. Some Slayer lyrics make my skin craw. I dont know the name of the song but i think it is on âGod Hates Us Allâ , it says âI keep the Bible in a pool of blood so its lies dont affect meâ or something to that affect. If the album title was not bad enough, lyrics like that make me steer clear. I was at Ozzfest one year and i saw a shirt for sale (dont remember the band) on the back it called Jesus a very crude word that rhyms with a certain football play common on 4th down that kicks the ball down field to the other team. I was horroified.I think you realize that the majority of heavy metal musicians are all DADS by now and in some cases even GRANDPARENTS, right? As for âturning to Satan,â the well-corroborated fact of the matter is that many heavy metal musicians arenât Satanist in any shape, matter or form, but rather, MANY OF THEM ARE CHRISTIAN Case in point, Megadeth â for those who donât know this by now:
Megadethâs David Ellefson on Sharing Religious Studies With Dave Mustaine
âWe recently reported on Megadeth bassist David Ellefsonâs journey to become a Lutheran pastor. Now, the bassist has spoken to the Raleigh Evangelical Examiner about his in-depth religious discussions with Megadeth frontman Dave Mustaine.â

The guy from Korn is also Christian.
The guy from Pedro The Lion is also Christian â recently played a huge Christian music festival.
Alice Cooperâs Christian â and he does a LOT of charity work, including a youth center and a yearly benefit concert and frequent golf tournament.

I know that they are mostly Christian. It is not the artists whom I am talking about, rather I am talking to people who are impressionable. If they indulge in Satanist metal, they may begin to think about Satan and maybe even turn to him. I absolutely hate rap and like metal, but Iâm not sure itâs entirely a fair comparison. Every genre has itâs subsection where the lyrics are utter drivel.Anyone think that metal at least is better than most of the rap music today, where the rapper talks about the hood, cars and such and uses the N word. I will take heavy metal over rap any day.
I canât stand rap either. I mainly listen to Gregorian chant, but I also like some metal (AKA non uber satanic metal) and Christian music.I absolutely hate rap and like metal, but Iâm not sure itâs entirely a fair comparison. Every genre has itâs subsection where the lyrics are utter drivel.
50âs yeah, but 60s?? I think Dave Mustaine is mid 50s, but Iâm not sure any of them have hit the big 6-0. Maybe Iâm wrong. Heâs also one of my favorite all time guests on That Metal Show.I think you realize that the majority of heavy metal musicians are all DADS by now and in some cases even GRANDPARENTS, right? Ozzy Osbourne (whoâs married with children) is 68. Still touring. Still rocking â and will be playing âBark At The Moonâ at a heavy metal festival for the eclipse next week. A few years ago, my brother went on a spree of buying Christian metal CDs. There are a tons of them out thereâfar more than there were 15â20 years ago. Some of them are quite good. Iâve long enjoyed Theocracy, Saviour Machine, and Divinefire. Veni Domine and Narnia are generally pretty good. Some newer bands Iâve found I really like are HB, Mehida, ,and Scandinavian Metal Praise. There is also 7days, Adiastasia, Audiovision, Essence Of Sorrow, Golden Resurrection, Harmony, Jacobs Dream, Majestic Vanguard, Random Eyes, Sacrecy, Sacred Warrior, The Sacrificed, Seventh Avenue, Sinbreed, Venia, Wingdom. Lots to choose from.I know there are Christan metal bands.
Ones i have heard are Stryper,Demon Hunter.
