listen to a lot of metal…

Opeth
Amon Amarth
Iced Earth
Mastodon
In Flames

I was wondering, after listening to a nun, Is heavy metal a sin or wrong to listen to, does it ever become a mortal sin?..
What if the lyrics are less then godly in certain songs, is it still a sin to listen to it yet ignore the lyrics(I do only mean one or two songs)?
Can some one explain the whole view???

I’m no authority on what is a sin and what isn’t, but I can’t imagine that listening to metal would be. Even with the hardcore “Satanic” death-metal stuff, you know the vast majority of these musicians aren’t being serious. It’s entertainment for a rebellious youth, much like hip-hop music is – well, was, before mom and dad started listening to Eminem. 🙂

I wouldn’t worry too much.

No I can see gangster rap and satanic death metal being something on the avoidable list for christians, but I listen to the most melodic forms of metal and hardly any of it is anti christian, I’m only in it for the music so to speak, thats all I’m concerned with being wrong…

Oh wow!
I HAVE caught myself alone in my car turning UP the radio when eminem comes on 😃

I think what needs to be considered is…how is the music affecting you? Are the lyrics affecting your beliefs? Your relationship with God?

I, also, listen to heavy metal (Metallica, Living Sacrifice, System of a Down, Demon Hunter). Some of them are christian (like Demon Hunter and Living Sacrifice), some aren’t. I wouldn’t say that heavy metal in and of itself is a sin, but it can be sinful, depending on what the message is. Not all heavy metal gives a negative message. In fact, a whole lot of it has a positive (or at least, not a negative) message (witness songs like “Hero of the Day,” “Nothing Else Matters,” “Wasting My Hate on You,” and the whole album “St. Anger” from Metallica).

I would say that listening to bands like Slipknot or Deicide (which means God-kill) is sinful if you are aware of the message.

All that said . . . rock on, man.

Use caution. There can be an insidious effect this music has upon the listener(s) that even the most cautious could be missing.

No, I see nothing wrong with that at all.

I had one guy try to argue that the mere use of distorted guitars was sinful because it distorts truth. He was a country fan who had a bias against metal. Needless to say, he did not convince many people.

Im a devout catholic , TLM, rosary, latin, vespers, ect. but Im a huge metal head:

Metallica, anthrax, megadeth, iron maiden, slayer, black sabbath, ac/dc, ect. I dont take any of it serious its just damn heavy and awsome tunes!

Heavy metal is a type of music, so it being a type it doesn’t necessarily mean it is Satanic, though there are quite a number of bands (Slayer comes to mind) who seem to be (I say seem because I only heard a few of their songs, and then quickly dismissed them). There are a few good old ones such as Stryper (already disbanded, and I remember band leader Michael Sweet bemoaning Fundamentalist leaders attacking them for their type of music; ironic now since those same leaders seem to embrace the music with the new ones coming out) and even Bon Jovi (which isn’t really that hard, but good enough).

A lot of it is Satanic. Fr. Corapi has talked about it before. He used to hang out in the recording studios back in his “sex, drugs, and rock and roll” days. He has said that what goes on in those studios is sinister. I would stay away from that stuff. Would you listen to that stuff if Mary and Jesus were in the room?

Whether it’s sinful would depend on the content of the lyrics.

For example, I think a lot of rap is definitely sinful to listen to because the lyrics tend to be somewhat pornographic. Similar things can be said about other popular music.

I don’t know about heavy metal specifically.

I agree: listen to the lyrics (subliminal messages barring).

That’s funny. Back in the late 1950s you would probably be one of those people branding Elvis Presley and Jerry Lee Lewis as “the Devil’s music.”

Don’t be such a Protestant. 😉

I have an extremely easy way to answer this and it works…

Pretend Jesus is standing next to you as you listen to your music, what would he think about it?

I love heavy metal, but I think that as long as the lyrics are ok with minimal-to-no swearing, it’s fine.

There IS Christian metal!:dancing:

Long live rock!!!

Peace.

PS: But if you want to do christian metal, “Kutless” definitely jams.

I agree with you, Genesis. Of course my post is going to trigger angry responses, but I think that if you have Jesus in your heart, you would have no desire for such dark-sounding music. You know Church fathers, especially in the middle ages, viewed music as being inseperable from God–music was made by God for no other purpose than for us to use it to worship Him. It’s obvious that certain music brings about certain feelings in one’s body/mind; St Augustine says in his writings that the beautiful music of the Catholic Church at his time was a key role in his conversion to belief in God. The music inspired his soul to search for God. I don’t think death metal–whether “christian” or not–can claim that it glorifies God or inspires souls–besides possibly inspiring teens to shoot their classmates. thats all for now . . . let the anmgry responses begin!

Music definitely has a bigger effect on people than they think. It is a definite psychological, physical, emotional and spiritual mystery.

I know there are genres of music warned against like New Age music and stuff

Too true… Actually, since I started listening to country music, I’ve:
  1. Moved into a trailer park
  2. Married my sister
  3. Killed a bunch of swarthy people who speak bad English
  4. convinced myself that pro wrestling and NASCAR are legitimate sports.
Seriously though, music is what you make it. If you have a weak will, you can be influenced by almost anything (ask any diehard “dittohead” how that works).

Peace, Hot Damn and YEEEEEHAAWWWW! 😃
