In discussion with a protestant friend, the word “saved” is flying around a whole lot. I was wondering if anyone has any insight into the original hebrew word(s) and what they mean? i.e. saved by faith alone.

For example this individual holds to a young earth believe interpreting Genesis 1 literally, this is focussed on the word “day” where I have head when you go back into the Hebrew, the word can mean period of time.

Thanks!

There are several meanings for the word saved in the Strong’s concordance depending the verse it is in

saved–,to live, to revive–keep (leave,make) alive, give(promise)life (let suffer to live, nourish up, preserve life—

If you tell me the exact verse you are looking for I will look up the exact meaning for that word. In the Strong’s there are 10 or more meanings depending on the verse.

For example,

Exodus 14:30
“Thus the LORD **saved **Israel that day
out of the hand of the Egyptians…”
saved = ויושע (vyousha)

Deuteronomy 33:29
“Happy art thou, O Israel: who is like unto thee,
O people **saved **by the LORD…”
saved = נושע (nousha)

both from ישע (yasha) to help, save, rescue

the name Joshua יהושע (yehoshua)
meaning, "the LORD is salvation
