My vet, who is Jewish, just lost his mother. For those who know the culture and language, what would be an appropriate thing to say to them?

Shalom? (I know that means peace, at least in both greeting and good-byes)

TIA

There is no need to say anything in Hebrew. Your vet knows you’re not Jewish, so just say you are sorry for his loss in your own words and your own way. That will mean a lot to him, I’m sure.

The traditional greeting in this circumstance is to say “May the memory of your mother be for a blessing.” I know this sounds rather formal, and I’m sure, as Della suggests, if you simply say “I’m sorry for your loss,” that would be appreciated as well.
