What is meant by the “heavenly things”? also translated as “realities.”
 
That is speaking of the temple in heaven — specifically the Holy of Holies.
 
Jesus’ sacrifice for us is the heavenly reality. The tabernacle and sanctuary being cleansed with animal’s blood, were the copies of heavenly things. Christ’s church, being cleansed by the sacrifice of his blood, is the heavenly thing.

St. Thomas Aquinas, in his commentary on Ephesians, says this specifically on this which you asked…
namely the tabernacle itself, which, as far as we are concerned, is the exemplar, although simply speaking it follows the example and is a figure of it, and so is of less dignity since that which is figured is more noble than the figure, just as the body is more noble than its shadow…
