Iāve known him as a friend for a few years and I can honestly say heās one of the most straightforwward, genuine and considerate people Iāve ever known. We share lots of interests in common and if I had to list all the qualities Iād look for in a man - heād have them all.
Heās a really close friend and the last thing I want to do is lead him on, or date him āfor funā without actually trying to discern whether heās a likely future husband. I used to think that thinking like that was silly and old fashioned:blush: Maybe aged 40 I am finally either growing up or turning into my mum
Anyway - am I being too picky about the age thing? Iāve been single such a long time that Iām actualy quite scared of taking the risk again, but this is one man who I think Iām safe with. However - thinking of the practical side of things: I am 40 years old and I have a Mirena fitted on the advice of my doctor. It was fitted after I had an operation to remove a non-cancerous growth from my womb, which had been the cause of a lot of problems. I was advised that this was the best solution and as I was not in a relationship at the time, itās definitely not a contraceptive!
Realistically though - letās say we date for a year or so, to really get to work out if we have a future and then I get the Mirena removed after weāve married. It can take several months to regain fertility and during that time, I have no idea if all my problems will come back again. So, even looking at it positively, I could be 42-43 before I had a child. I know older mums arenāt uncommon nowadays but it does carry extra risks and Iām not prepared to even consider abortion. I just wonder if heās really thought all this through?
Fortunately, he is someone who I can really talk honestly and openly too - but whenās a good time to mention this?!
I know dating is the time to find out if you are truly compatible and I know we can do it properly and respectfully (I hope
SOā¦should I be worrying? Does an age difference matter? Weāre both working adults and both well out of our 20s, so itās not like Iām preying on a young lad! (heās the one that did all the chasing) Weāre not bothered about peopleās comments of they want to make an issue out of it - but itās really hard for me to get any perspective right now because it was such a surprise; Iāve been single for 11 years and the whole thought of dating again is just plain scary
Having said that, one of my aunts was happilly married to a man 5 years younger than her and at that time - it was a huge deal for some people. One of my friends and former colleagues is very happy with his wife, who is 11 years his senior and she has just had their first child - aged 48: a healthy baby boy.
Iām not saying it will lead anywhere - but heās such a good friend, I would feel quite disrespectful towards him if I were to start dating him knowing that itās not a good idea. I canāt figure out whether Iāve got cold feet a bit because itās been such a long time, or whether Iām scared of getting carried away because Iām just so happy that finally a really amazing man is interested - so Iām trying to be mega-analytical
Any advice gratefully received (unless of course anyone suggests this is a scandal
