Would I go to hell if I engaged in non-procreative sex with my spouse?

In other words, is marital, non-procreative sex a venial or mortal sin?

Using natural methods to avoid conception are not sinful if the reasons for not having children are not selfish.

Sure, there are a lot of qualifications. Check out the “sin of Onan” in the bible. Look up Genesis chapter 38. Skim over Humana Vitae online after that.

The church teaching is that sex without the possibility of procreation is grave matter. If you know it is grave matter and do it anyway (most are in this category), then it is mortal sin.

To my knowledge furstrating the procreative aspect of the marital embrace deliberately is a mortal sin which should be confessed and forgiven.

Wait a minute. Are you saying that a woman who has gone through menopause, therefore knowing sex will not result in procreation, is sinning? I thought if you were open to having children, at any age it is ok.

No, she is not sinning. If she can’t conceive at all, well then if she has marital relations, even though it won’t result in children, it is not sinful, as she isn’t deliberately doing it to not have children. If she is, well then it’s a grave sin. The Church teaches it is both unitive and procreative. But remember, miracles do happen and you should be open to having more children if you are going to have marital relations. To use any form of birth control is sinful, and if a couple uses them they are committing a mortal sin. But, NFP (Natural Family Planning) is the only way to prevent having children, only if it’s not for selfish reasons as others have said. God Bless :signofcross::byzsoc:

So, giving a husband oral sex and him not finishing in the vagina will send me hell?

If the oral sex didn’t end up in vaginal sex then yes it would be sinful. Every act of sex needs to be open to life. If the woman cannot conceive then she just can’t.

So, what happens if the husband has been sterilized (before they knew it was sinful). It’s been confessed and forgiven…but now what?

It was my understanding that now if you are open to procreation…i.e.not having oral sex…that you are not sinning as long as you are still open to it…the chances are not good…but hey…He is God…He can do anything he wants.

I’d be curious to hear the responses to this…

It’s grave matter, which means it CAN rise to the level of a mortal sin. But as with any issue, only God (and maybe the person himself with an informed conscience and sanctifying Grace) knows if any particular individual act is a mortal sin.

Remember, sins aren’t just things on an arbitrary list. They are things that, by their very nature damage our ability to give and receive love. Intentionally sterilized sex is fundamentally altered from the way God designed it. We play with matches in the powder shed when we mess with God’s design for our sexuality (the way we most closely are the image and likeness of God himself - able to bring forth new life).

Can the husband’s sterlization be reversed? If so he must do so. Otherwise it is not complete repentance
.if it can not be reversed then i agree with what else you have written here.

If it was the intent of both of yous to finish this way and having full knowledge that finishing this way was gravely disordered, without confessing you both are endangered.

Source?
I find it hard to believe that the Church would require elective surgery. Who pays for it?

This is not true according to what I’ve read. Repentance never requires surgery to be valid. It might be a good idea and helpful to one’s self-discipline to restore the natural regulations God built into our sexuality, but sincere repentence (which by definition includes regret for having done it without any remaining satisfaction that the effects continue) is all we need to be forgiven and be restored to Grace.

But the reader should take neither of our words for it. If this applies to you, seek authoritative advice.

Well…I’ve heard priests say that a reversal is NOT required. They did say however that one should not take advantage of that state… I.e…just have sex whenever because you won’t conceive…that would be the repentent part I’m guessing.

I want to be clear about what you think as “non-procreative sex”. Catholics are not allowed to use artificial means of birth control. That would be considered non-procreative. So, condoms, IUDs, birth control pills, are all not allowed.

Catholics are allowed to space, delay (temorarily or permanently) having children, (with serious reasons, such as financial, medical, emotional, etc) by using natural family planning. That means, you learn signs of fertility and track them and not have sex during fertile times. This the church allows. Some people may think this is “non-procreative sex”, but this is not true. And the reason why is not “non-procreative sex” is that you still have to be open to life. In other words, if you don’t follow the signs of fertility correctly, or chance it because you can’t control yourself, and you become pregnant, you have to accept that pregnancy.

That doesn’t mean you have to intend to conceive every single time you have sex with your spouse. That means that when having sex with your spouse, you have to be open to life, and only use natural means to prevent pregnancy.

Correct…but the OP later talks about oral sex, which by itself is ALWAYS non-procreative.

Oral sex is not forbidden by the Church. Married couples can have oral sex as long as it’s used as foreplay, and as long as sex ends in the marital embrace.

Where did Jesus say this

The Church does NOT require reversal of sterilization, at all. Nor does the Church require celebacy after sterilization for married couples. However, they must go to confession and get absolution.
