In each religion the concept of an afterlife (in some form or another) existed. Of course, some exist with the concept of justice where the evil are punished. Yet, how can they say it is a pagan concept, when Christ preached it. If it wasn’t from Him wouldn’t Christ have followed the Jewish afterlife beliefs of not really justice or heaven(correct me if I’m wrong though havent really researched this)? If not wouldn’t He have followed Roman pagan beliefs of no real punishment or reward unless you do something horrible/great to the gods? Yet, the belief in Hell and Heaven aren’t really found in any culture in a similar fashion. The pagan beliefs I have heard of you have to feed your kid to the gods to receive Hell, yet Christ criticized hypocrites and sinners which the pagans would have ignored unless they killed someone. So, the Christian Hell reflects only what Christ preaches and not any pagan concepts.

well what i was taught wheni was doing theology was that jews only beleived in sheol the land of the dead and the concept of a firery afterlife and eternal punnishment comes from greek mythology. people would say the actual jesus never preached it but it was a later beleif of the hellenised gospel communities. anyone else have any views on this ?

Well from my knowledge of Greek mythology, the only truly punished people were those who did something like kill their son and feed them to the gods and that didn’t result in a firey punishment but something like having a tree with a single apple out of your reach and a pool of water at your feet which always retreated out of his reach. This just left him infinitely starving and dehydrated. Outside of Christianity, I dont think there is a firey punishment but once again correct me if I’m wrong.
