Hell doesn't scare me enough

I know I should be terrified of it, but popular depictions of Hell seem far more terrifying than the Hell described by philosophers and theologians. I just finished watching a video on the benefits of meditating on Hell, and the Hell he described was frightening, but far different from simply eternal separation from God. Granted, his Hell would prove more problematic in regards to God’s mercy and justice, but Hell doesn’t seem as scary if it doesn’t violate these divine attributes. How can I fear Hell more?

Focus on loving God. Let that be your motivation instead of fearing Hell.

Whoa, whoa, whoa! I think you’re going a bit far with that diagnosis, doc.

The defining characteristic of sociopaths is that they lack empathy, and I didn’t read anything that indicated this is true of the OP.

Seriously, you can’t go around saying things like that: it’s dangerous. If you make it a habit, sooner or later you’ll ascribe a blatantly incorrect “diagnosis” to someone who’s already on the edge, and that could be just enough to push them over. Maybe it seems silly to you, but there are people who will hang themselves because of comments like that.

Give spiritual advice if you feel that you’re knowledgeable, but don’t diagnose someone you’ve never met as a sociopath.

Catechism of the Catholic Church 1035 has … The chief punishment of hell is eternal separation from God, in whom alone man can possess the life and happiness for which he was created and for which he longs.
 
Pray for this grace, to understand the terror of hell. It is real and we should be aware of that fact. Pray for understanding.

It helps to think of things with God as a marriage, I find that whenever I cannot understand something especially in the Bible I try to think of it in terms of a marriage and most of the time that helps.

So imagine you are madly in love with someone, more so than you ever have been in your whole life. They embody everything to you, all you desire, truly you want to die, suffer, obey, and do anything for them. A single glance from this person would truly make you weak and fall to your knees.

In essence they are love, and there is nothing that you desire more, that you would not do for them.

Now imagine this person turns from you and says away from me, because of your actions we cannot be together. So now besides the physical pains of life you must endure with the knowledge that you lost your one true and only love because you hurt them.

Now imagine that you must endure not only the pains of hell, but the eternal separation from God, one who we as humans in this form cannot even begin to imagine how intimate and how much love we will feel when we are united to Him. It is said that we’re it not that our souls be immortal then Gods love would literally melt them away. We cannot fathom the love that we will experience in heaven, and those that are in hell will know what they are missing…

You may also enjoy a book called Forty Dreams of St Bosco. In this book he describes hell and damnation and also his own visit to hell where he was escorted through hell and was even given an experience of the pains of hell, however brief and limited it was.

Yet, I join the others who have posted similarly and say do not love merely out of the fear of hell, but try to think more of God and heaven. Remember the act of contrition when we say not just because of the fear of hell but because God deserves our love.
 
It is eternal, and just the fact that there is no escape is harrowing.

You understand you will have The Devil for company.

There is no love to be found.

The problem is, no one knows exactly. Ive read more than a few descriptions from NDEs and other sources, but no way to determine if thats true or not.

Hell could be very different for each person, it could be nothing like anyone has ever imagined.

Most of what we were taught about hell, came out of Dante’s fictional account in his book, Inferno.

As other’s have said, hell is separation from God.

Keep in mind what St Pope John Paul II said, “God doesn’t send souls to hell, they go there on their own when they reject God.”

Those of us who have faith in Jesus Christ, are saved from Hell providing they remain faithful and do as he commanded, i,e, love one another.
