A priest said the existence of hell is necessary because it gives us a real opportunity to choose between good :yup: and evil :nope: , but he also said he believes hell is empty because God will not send anyone there and no one would want to go there since it would imply to live forever without God, without love, without joy, etc.-:crying: and we were all created to long for Him.:gopray2:

Is he right?

…boy i sure wish he was, but that is not what the church teaches…

first and foremost, God will not send anyone to Hell (so he’s probably right there) but, we sure can choose to go there by not doing as he ask us to do…

… you might want to ask the Priest where in scripture or in the CCC does he find the documentation for that jewel of wisdom…

Peace:thumbsup:

The fact is that we must make the choice prior to death, and there are plenty of people who die without choosing to love their Creator. We don’t know if specific souls are in hell, but it would be foolish to assume no one goes there.

Also, consider Christ’s words:

“Enter through the narrow gate; for the gate is wide and the road broad that leads to destruction, and those who enter through it are many.” Matthew 7:13

I wish everyone would choose Heaven, but I see so many folks who seem to be committed to evil. Maybe they all end up in Purgatory for an extended stay, but Jesus and the saints say that there are souls down there. I tend to believe them.

No Hell is not empty. It is full, but there is always room. Hell is the place complete void of God, void of love, where souls go for eternity. My mom used to always say, ‘There’s no comradery in Hell.’

People chose to go to Hell by constantly refusing God, by not chosing His way, by turning away from Him, and not wanting to get back right with God. Sometime we do it on a grand scale (cheating on our spouse), sometimes we do it quietly (taking home some office supplies), and sometimes do it and are completely numb to the fact they are turning away from God (giving our parents a hard time on a minor matter, which directly conflicts with ‘Honor thy Father and Mother’).

We cannot assume with confidence who is going to Hell and who isn’t. Though God is the judge and authority of our souls, God does not send anyone to Hell, just as God doesn’t send anyone to Heaven. People chose whether they are going Heaven or Hell by the way they live their life, and God shows us our decision through his Judgement.

Our Mother, Mary, has shown Hell to children, and all have stated it was terrible and horrifying.

I’m surprised something your priest is so mistaken on such a topic.

Thank you.

 Believe it or not this priest is guilty of idolatry. He is making a God to fit his belief system. Hell is for those who reject Gods mercy.Once Gods judgement has been set its to late to repent. It breaks Gods heart and He continues to love even those in Hell. Every person has been given a free will. Its our choice. Heaven or Hell. Scripture is full of verses that describes what Hell is like. Its full of torment, pain, suffering screaming, foul smelling, full of worms, darkness, glooming, ect. Not a place one wants to be for eternity… God Bless

You have a good point. The way the OP put it, I see how you can get that.

Since this priest “believes” hell is empty, then he has made a prediction about God. If he firmly and obstinately holds this belief, then I certainly see how this can be idolatrous. I would think it would be idolatrous to the extent that he clung to that belief in order to have a false sense of peace.

i do not think so, neither did dietrich von hildebrand who said, if i remember well,
that it would be foolish to assume that a man like hitler was not in hell

though the opinion is fairly widespread, even among priests; i heard it several times, even publicly
a strong example, that I have from hear-saying, is that the German theologian and priest Urs von Balthasar was stating: hell exists but no one is in there.
now this man was highly reputed , also by the former holy father jpii.
he even had already announced that he would create him a cardinal. but before he could do so solemny, Urs von Balthasar died.

All I know, Alma, is I am going to work very dilligently to AVOID FINDING OUT THE HARD WAY…lololol:dancing:

Alma, that is what the devil wants you to think. If hell is empty then there is no reason why we should resist temptations.

Thank you for your comments, I agree with what you all said.🙂
I went back to talk to that priest and told him what St Agustin said: ‘God created you without you but He will not save you without you’, and I also told him he cannot deny there are many who willingly reject God and all that is related to Him (perfect love, perfect justice, perfect truth, etc). He replied that in this world we are conditioned by our bad experiencies, (bad parents, lack of love, etc) but that when we die we will be able to contemplate our whole life freely and in the light of God, realize the consequences of our bad actions, feel sorry for them, :crying:and want to enter into Heaven.:dancing:
I told him nothing guarantees that a person who has lived a life of sin will feel sorry for it. :nope:
He said that a sinner is conditioned by his or her past but at the time of his or her death will be free of all that. I said the angels were not conditioned by anything and still some of them had chosen to reject God.
He did not know what to answer.:whacky:
What do you think?

Alma, you did a great job talking to this priest. He is misinformed.
Through private revelations and Saints, when a soul with mortal sins is about to die, they have a few minutes to feel remorse and turn to God. Some refuse and keep their anger and hatred and so they actually choose where they go. Of course, Hell is so horrendous that it must be a decision they immediately regret, I don’t know.
God is so merciful that He really tries, but it is the soul who takes themselves there. It’s complicated and I’m sure I haven’t explained it well, so I appologize.

"Oh Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to Thee:.

The only way to know whether he is right about Hell’s being empty, is to go there.

Then it won’t be 😃

IMO, that is all one can usefully say on the matter. Anything else is prying into what is no business of ours; for our business is to love God with all our hearts, souls, minds, and strength; and our neighbour in and for Christ.

If we needed to know about Hell’s population, we would have been told. We have not - so we don’t. ##

If one does not practice virtue in this life, how will they be able to accept it in the next? Mary said to the children at Fatima that she sees souls falling into hell like snowflakes.

Your priest doesnt have to be Logical to be a priest.

Your priest is not logical. And your Priest is bordering on being a HERITIC. Read the Bible. Read St. Tomas Aquinas. Read St Pio. There are souls of former living humans in hell. Your priest has been influenced by the Far Left crowd. He is wrong. He actually is offending God. God who made Heaven and Hell plus our Earth.

Hello Alma,

Well we know Korah is in hell for attempting to schism from God’s authorized leaders of the Israelite Church. Scripture tells us Korah is in hell. We also know that Satan is in hell because Jesus tells us this. Pope Benedict XIV believes that Judas Iscariot is in hell. So there are at least three which defeats your priests theory that hell is empty.

AnathamaBenedict XIV (1740-58–De Synodo dioecesana X, i) cites the anathema maranatha formulated by the Fathers of the Fourth Council of Toledo against those who were guilty of the crime of high treason: "He who dares to despise our decision, let him be stricken with anathema maranatha, i.e. may he be damned at the coming of the Lord, may he have his place with Judas Iscariot, he and his companions.

Quoted from New Advent Catholic Encyclopedia newadvent.org/cathen/01455e.htm

NAB MAT 25:41

Then he will say to those on his left, 'Depart from me, you accursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels.
NAB NUM 16:16
Korah. Moses said to Korah, “You and all your band shall appear before the LORD tomorrow–you and they and Aaron too. Then each of your two hundred and fifty followers shall take his own censer, put incense in it, and offer it to the LORD; and you and Aaron, each with his own censer, shall do the same.” So then all took their censers, and laying incense on the fire they had put in them, they took their stand by the entrance of the meeting tent, the glory of the LORD appeared to the entire community, and the LORD said to Moses and Aaron, “Stand apart from this band, that I may consume them at once.” But they fell prostrate and cried out, “O God, God of the spirits of all mankind, will one man’s sin make you angry with the whole community?” The LORD answered Moses, “Speak to the community and tell them: Withdraw from the space around the Dwelling” [of Korah, Dathan and Abiram].

**Punishment of Dathan and Abiram. **Moses, followed by the elders of Israel, arose and went to Dathan and Abrim. Then he warned the community, “Keep away from the tents of these wicked men and do not touch anything that is theirs: otherwise you too will be swept away because of all their sins.” When Dathan and Abiram had come out and were standing at the entrance of their tents with their wives and sons and little ones, Moses said, "This is how you shall know that it was the LORD who sent me to do all that I have done, and that it was not I who planned it: if these men die an ordinary death, merely suffering the fate common to all mankind, then it was not the LORD who sent me. But if the LORD does something entirely new, and the ground opens its mouth and swallows them alive down into the nether world, with all belonging to them, then you will know that these men have defied the LORD." No sooner had he finished saying all this than the ground beneath them split open, and the earth opened its mouth and swallowed them and their families [and all of Korah’s men] and all their possessions. They went down alive to the nether world with all belonging to them; the earth closed over them, and they perished from the community. But all the Israelites near them fled at their shrieks, saying, “The earth might swallow us too!”

**NAB JUD 1:10 **

These people, however, not only revile what they have no knowledge of but are corrupted through the very things they know by instinct, like brute animals. So much the worse for them! They have taken the road Cain took. They have abandoned themselves to Balaam’s error for pay, and like Korah they perish in rebellion. These men are blotches on your Christian banquets. They are wild ocean waves, splashing their shameless deeds abroad like foam, or shooting stars for whom the thick gloom of darkness has been reserved forever.

As far as I know, hell was created for satan but even he isn’t there because he is here tempting all of us every day of our lives. And I have no idea how full hell is because I haven’t been there. A person might guess though.😉

No. Read the Gospels. Read the writings of the canonized saints and doctors of the Church. Consider the vision of the children of Fatima. Your priest has “itching ears.”

This priest is utterly irrational. All we have to do is want to enter into heaven to get there. How simple! We don’t need priests to say mass, or hear confessions, or spread the gospel, or …

Why even have priests? Why doesn’t he go out and get a real job? :hmmm:
