I had a post written and my internet connection went bad so my post got deleted. Right now I will only say this. The changes to the Maronite liturgy largely occured before the Jesuits were suppressed. Shortly after Trent the Jesuits were sent to update the Maronite Church and make some changes. They did, and they burned the old books.

I am glad they were suppressed, other wise there might have been greater destruction of our tradition.

Jimmy,

I’ll have to disagree with you as to the over=riding role of the Jesuits in the latinization of your Church. That long preceeded any Jesuit presence in Lebanon, although Fathers Eliano and Raggio certainly didm’t help the situation and indeed destroyed some of the holy texts…

The Society was founded in 1534, by which time the Maronites had already and regretably been latinized for 3 centuries - since the incursion of French missioners (principally Franciscans) accompanying 12th century Crusaders. See here for a decently detailed, albeit brief, history and another here by Chorbishop Beggiani. The latter takes note of the Jesuit contribution to the problems that exist still.

Regretably, the Maronites themselves were also complicit as contributors to the problem. In a similar vein to what Eastern Catholics did centuries later in the US; much was surrendered in the goal of showing the Latins just how very Catholic - how very loyal - the Maronites were.

Many years,

Neil

What is the definition for de-centralize ?
  1. To distribute the administrative functions or powers of (a central authority) among several local authorities. Within the Catholic Church this would set a dangerous precedent for even more people (East and West) to question and or reject the Pope’s authority. We have nothing at all to gain by it, and it still would not be enough to satisfy many in the Orthodox world. The idea of a universal Catholic Church, which has an infallible Pope in some parts and a fallible Pope in others, yet is still supposedly one, is an alien concept.

I don’t think that the East will ever accept the Chair of Peter unless God intervenes to show them that it is His will for His Church.

**This is beginning to look like a non-Catholic topic.

Orthodox have no problem with the chair of Peter, as far as that goes, never have. Saint Peter is one of Holy Orthodoxy’s most beloved saints! But Orthodox have a big problem with all of the novel ideas surrounding it these days.

When the western church makes some badly needed corrections, I am sure that the Orthodox will be very warm and welcoming.

However I don’t think the west will ever restore itself to Orthodoxy ****unless God intervenes to show them that it is His will for His Church.

If you have any further comments along this line, feel free to start another thread…in the non-Catholic section.

Pope Innocent III excommunicated those who took part in the sack of Constantinople (I refuse to call it a Crusade)
