im back with my silly questions.

my friend told me that catholic killed the 1st Christians. the trinity was never a doctrine till a certain king approves it. the teaching of wearing proper dress while attending the mass was issued only near the year 2000. we worship images (friend:“Cant you worship god without that images? god even forbid us to use images from heaven earth or under water”) or something like that. when a person die, the spirit goes back to the hands of God, the body is buried together with the soul.

Well you are right. They are silly questions! I hope nobody tries to answer them. We do not discuss baseless claims here. It is up to you or your friend to provide evidence to support these claims and then we can read them and discuss them.

Its like me claiming you sleep under your bed every night because you are scared of the monster on the ceiling. Its a ridiculous claim and why should you have to deny it and prove its untrue. The burden of proof is on me, the one making the claim. Thats how it is with your friend’s claims. Its up to him/her to give documentary support for the claims and not up to us to rebutt baseless assertions.

Your questions aren’t silly, jersen. You would help yourself greatly, though, by getting some good Catholic books on history and basic theology. Frank Sheed’s Theology for Beginners would be a good place to start.

The first Christian martyrs were Catholics and were put to death by the order of the Roman Emperor Nero who was decidedly NOT a Catholic. It’s not uncommon for anti-Catholics to be ignorant of history and to think that anything done to Christians by the Roman Empire was done by the Church of Rome, since they confuse the two.

Q: How can you deny that Constantine was the first pope and that he personally instituted the Roman Catholic Church at the Council of Nicaea (where he also invented the unbiblical doctrine of the Trinity)? It’s a matter of historical fact.

A: We deny it on the excellent ground that it isn’t true.

Flavius Valerius Constantinus (275-337) reigned as the Roman emperor between 306 and 337. He never was pope–he wasn’t even baptized a Christian until he lay on his deathbed. He attributed to Christ his winning a decisive battle in Rome at the Milvian Bridge.

Legend has it that a large cross appeared in the sky over his troops, and superimposed on the cross were the words In hoc signo vinces, “In this sign you conquer.” As a result of his victory, he promptly lifted the empire-wide ban on Catholicism (Edict of Milan, 313). Although he didn’t make Christianity the state religion, it achieved that status by the end of the century.

In 325 the Emperor convoked the First Council of Nicaea to deal with the Arian heresy. The pope at the time of the Nicaean council was Sylvester I; reigned from January 1, 314 to December 31, 335. He was the thirty-third bishop of Rome (and therefore pope), which means Constantine hardly could have been the first pope.

The charge that Constantine invented the doctrine of the Trinity can be disproved by studying the writings of the Church Fathers. They taught the doctrine and even used the word “Trinity” as early as the year 181. (For citations see “The Fathers Know Best,” This Rock, July 1991, 23-24).

This is a belief typical of Seventh-Day Adventists and Jehovah’s Witnesses, and Manolo’s Filipino cult which draws much of its belief from the first two.

I see we took different approaches. I do agree with you that jersen should learn to ask for back-up for such typically ignorant claims and put the onus on his friend. jersen, though, perhaps is young and in the process of learning his faith via CAF. I hope he expands his reading on the Faith beyond this forum.
