If you teach a kid things from when he’s young he might also grow up believing silly things like 2+2=4 and that electrons carry a negative charge and can be annihilated by stellar nucleosynthesis.
Yes, but he’s not taught that if later in life he has strong reasons to doubt that electrons carry a negative charge he will cause immense grief for his family, risk being disowned, and probably face an eternity in hell. He can feel free to explore his hypothesis without those fears.

You could be right. Here are some other possibilities:

Many non-believers had painful or humiliating experiences with religious groups. I know people who because of their doubts or questions as kids were publicly shamed, beaten, disowned, and even had exorcisms performed on them.

This is indeed very sad (but I don’t think that’s the reason most atheists leave the faith). Were you one of those children?

They fear the tyranny of the majority. Non-believers are a minority group, and one of the very few remaining where it is not only accepted but fashionable to try to dehumanize and denigrate.

It’s funny but most of history shows that it is the minority (those who consolidate power over the masses) that we should fear. I don’t know what exact part of the world you live in (somewhere in the U.S. I believe), but culturally speaking (T.V., movies, media and such) it is Christians who are denigrated the most.

Many Christians show precious little respect for how non-believers and even people of other faith choose to teach their kids. I wouldn’t dream of teaching someone else’s kids all the reasons I reject their parents’ religion. Yet all too many Christians have no problem whatsoever telling children of non-believers or other faiths all the reasons why Christianity is the one true religion or why they are going to hell if they don’t do things their way.
You must be living in the Bible belt because that’s the only explanation I can think of wherein I would see such behaviour executed (telling your kids they are going to Hell). Are Fundamentalists the ones doing this? Because you can’t stereotype Christianity for Fundamentalists (who view even Catholics negatively) of this kind.

And furthermore, where I live Atheists have precious little respect for believers even to the point of trampling on our rights.

Please do not equate disagreeing with disrespecting. Non-believers should not be expected to treat creeds and dogmas with kid gloves, nor should we mock people because they believe them. I have respect for you and the good works that the RCC and more generally the Christian faith promote, and I dislike some aspects of the RCC and Christianity as well.

Yes, what a utopia we enjoyed when faith in God was nearly universal in Western societies – slavery, genocides, killing of innocents on a massive scale, attempts to completely destroy indigenous peoples’ art, music, and culture, the list goes on. I’m not going to argue that faith in God caused these things, but faith in God certainly didn’t stop any of them either.
Honestly, do you really believe this? I think you are basing yourself more on emotion (and to an extent an inaccurate view of history) than reason, for historically, it was the 20th century that contained within it the worst athrocities against humanity (all the centuries before it could not achieve the horrors witnessed in that one century). And if I’m not mistaken you are refering to the Aztecs (genocide), a brutal civilization that killed more than 20 000 or so a year through sacrifice (they also practiced cannibalism). They were wiped out by the way because of disease (more than 80% died this way) not murder. As for slavery, that was condemned by the CC. And what are you refering to when you say “killing of innocents on a massive scale”? I cannot think of anything in the Church’s history (while the West was as you say under God) to which you could be refering to. It’s ironic that you say this though because abortion kills more than 1 000 000 innocents a year in the U.S. alone. There has been up to date 45 000 000 killed in this manner since 1973. Would you consider that death on a massive scale?

I have been an atheist all of my life and was lucky enough never to have been baptized.
This seems like a strange statement for a person to make who does not believe that baptism leaves any permanent changes on the soul. 🤷

If you believe baptism is an empty ritual, devoid of spiritual consequence, why would you be lucky to avoid it?
Code:
I still have empathy, morality, love, and care for other people. And I may not be 100% that there is no higher power but I am 100% certain that there is no Yahweh/Jesus whatever you want to call him.
Does that mean that you believe our concept of Jesus isd not one of a Higher Power?
And it is ignorant statements like this that have turned me into an antitheist. You have deeply offended me jam and josie to say that I am incapable of love and morality.
No one is saying that you are incapable of love and morality. The assertion was that the ability to be this way is part of what it is to be made in the image and likeness of God. It is part of who we are created to be. When you act in accordance with love and morality, you are fulfilling the purpose for which God created you.

Is that why you are offended?

The other question is, if you are convinced that there is no Yahweh or Jesus, why would you be offended if some people who are under the delusion that you are created in their image would bother you?

I think you need to take a look at why this is offensive to you. People don’t bother to be “anti” or get “offended” by things they don’t care about.

Yet every time our leaders start fabricating reasons for war, it never fails that some people tell us God wants us to stay at peace and some people tell us God wants us to go to war. It is the latter group that I worry about.
I can respect and appreciate this. And my priest today spoke on this very issue, so it’s ironic in light of your comments. He’s very anti-war and anti-violence.
He said those that promote war are not living the spirit of Christ. He even mentioned, the “Great war” …stating, it was not Great, Christian nations were killing each other!

Want proof?
Look at a tree, or a dragon fly. See all the tiny details? Then think about how it has an internal system to make it live too. A heart, veins, brain, et cetera. Now think how literally EVERYTHING in this world is so complex and how it runs together perfectly. You think all the little details in the world is merely from a random explosion of nothing? Think about how our heart beats everyday, I can listen to it beat every night when I lay down in my bed, I’m always in awe of how amazing it is.

Consider this. There’s no such thing as a true artist. A true artist creates out of nothing. You’ll never find one of those. Only God is a true artist. Everything is recycled from something else, it draws influence from something that will always originally draw back to what God has created. Fashion, music, airplanes, boats, all of it came from somewhere. I’ve noticed that music artists are always stealing ideas from something else, as a fiction writer I’ve never had a completely original thought. It always came from someone else or something else. Nothing comes out of nothing. Only God can truly create. God exists! We should rejoice!

Yes, there are nice atheist and mean atheist, just as there’s nice christians and mean christians. We’re all flawed and sinful. But that’s not the point of christianity, the point is that we are trying to love and serve the Lord through forgiveness and repentence.

You should check out the story of juan diego, there’s books about it and the miracles that surround him are amazing. You can go see the cloth with the image of Mary today if you went to Mexico to see it. I’ve read that scientist with NASA equipment looked at the cloth and saw in Mary’s eyes Juan Diego’s reflection. I hope that maybe I’ll go there one day myself. But yes, you should read about this miracle, it’s simply inspiring. =]

If you don’t like being “preached” to, then don’t join a site full of christians. We aren’t preaching. We’re trying to answer your questions the best we can, just as you wanted us to. So why complain?

I hope you have a blessed sunday! you seem very intelligent for your age! I’m honestly impressed.

But let me just say something, faith is believing even through doubt. In my opinion, and I hope you don’t find me rude for saying it, you have faith but you’ve only buried it. Otherwise why work so hard to argue against it? Why join this site? Why bother at all? Listening to atheists who are trying to convince you that their is no hope, no God, is never going to help your faith. And I doubt you’ll find it listening to us. You’ll find it when YOU decide to open your heart and ask for God to come to you with humble patience.

Correction:
Christianity is a religion on which the followers rely on an afterlife, if it isn’t there…then they would have spent a 7th or more of their life worshipping something that wasn’t there.
Atheism offers a different look at the world and freedom. Atheists are not limited to what a book tells them what they can and can’t do. They are more self independent. Yet, they are also mature, you do not see atheists coming up in the paper because they are on a mass murder spree. There are so many more Christians in jails than atheists. Yes, there are a lot more Christians, but there are also a lot of atheists believe it or not. And still, it doesn’t even out the charts. The atheists in prisons are more like 0.01% or something and Christians being like 85%. Its crazy.
Don’t know if this hasn’t already been said or not, if so, my apologies. I’m still reading this thread.

You need to realize that ALOT of the population are christians! There’s more christians in america than atheist. Naturally, there’d be more chrisians in jail rather than atheist because there’s generally more christians. Just because you say you’re a christian doesn’t mean you’ll act like one and act perfect. Everyone is flawed and everyone commits sins. We don’t have the right to judge. To me that statistic only says something about the human race, not what the church teaches.

Well, christianity teaches you to be satisfied with the answers found in the Bible, whereas an atheist would rather encourage you to question everything you don’t know, and find out why things are the way they are instead.

If the Vatican didn’t lose their grip on Europe during the era of enlightement (not sure of the English name), we’d probably still believe the earth was flat and that the sun revolved around us.
The bible gives you peace in the word of God while giving you the freedom to live your life. God has given you free will.

Again, those are PEOPLE. Why do you keep attacking the people of the church? To me that just shows me you don’t understand what the bible teaches! Study the bible! There’s so much to it.

If anything, the bible encourages you to study the world God has given to man. We are to have DOMINION over earth, how is that not encouraging to know about the earth? The more complicated the earth is, the more I’m sure it’s from creation rather than some random explosion.

You must be living in the Bible belt because that’s the only explanation I can think of wherein I would see such behaviour executed (telling your kids they are going to Hell). Yes, I live in the Bible Belt. Yes, it is almost exclusively the Fundamentalists who perform these actions.
And furthermore, where I live Atheists have precious little respect for believers even to the point of trampling on our rights.
Sorry to hear that. There are “fundie” atheists too

, for historically, it was the 20th century that contained within it the worst athrocities against humanity (all the centuries before it could not achieve the horrors witnessed in that one century).
It was just a matter of scale. We had effective technology for committing atrocities on a mass scale in the the 20th century. So far in the 21st century however, despite the ever present menace of atheism there have been no atrocities committed on the scales of even several centuries ago.
And if I’m not mistaken you are refering to the Aztecs (genocide), a brutal civilization that killed more than 20 000 or so a year through sacrifice (they also practiced cannibalism).
Aztecs, Maya, Inca. To be honest, I don’t see how Western culture at the time was less brutal. How many witches did Westerners burn? Nobody knows for sure, but estimates of the number of witches killed range from a hundred thousand to millions.
As for slavery, that was condemned by the CC.
…Many centuries after it was officially sanctified by several Papal Bulls. I do; however, appreciate that the RCC leadership was among the first major Christian denominations to support abolition.
And what are you refering to when you say “killing of innocents on a massive scale”? I cannot think of anything in the Church’s history (while the West was as you say under God) to which you could be refering to.
There are Papal Bulls I wrote about earlier in this thread, but the larger point is this: When faith in God was nearly universal in Western culture, it did not stop people from committing horrible atrocities. So the claim that it was a small fraction of Western population rejecting Christianity that led to such and such atrocities is nonsense. These types of events were being practiced for many centuries before atheism was a blip on the radar. That they were larger in scale in the 20th century had more to do with technology than additional malice.
It’s ironic that you say this though because abortion kills more than 1 000 000 innocents a year in the U.S. alone.
There has been up to date 45 000 000 killed in this manner since 1973. Would you consider that death on a massive scale?
Well, Catholics aren’t exactly practicing what they preach here. Catholics represent 24% of the US population but have 31% of abortions in the US. So this goes back to the point I’m trying to make. Faith in God is apparently not stopping people from doing these things.

LOVE IS NOT GOD! Love is an emotion! Just a very strong one. Depression is an emotion, it is very strong. You are proving nothing with love. Love is a reaction to something we see or feel. Is god a reaction!!! Sorry, I’m on the edge of the plank right now, give me some time to cool off.
*1 Corinthians 13:1-8a and 13 *
…Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres…

What I bolded is what I want to focus on in this post. All the normal emotions, such as depression, hunger, boredom, they are all selfish emotions- whether innocent or not. They are needed for survival or for our knowing for what’s best for US. Human are selfish by nature, by original sin.
But real love is not selfish, it’s the sacrifices we make for others everyday. It’s Jesus being nailed to a cross. Surely, we people can not have real love without God.

God is love and love is real! 😃

Now, how did I know that? Is there a way you can move somewhere else?
Yes, we live in the Bible Belt and like it here. We do have the occasional problem with the generally well meaning but meddling fundamentalist. Still, it’s a nice part of the country and in general the people are very friendly.
You don’t believe me?
Yes, I believe you. Many atheists have taken to calling some atheists 'fundie atheists". They go around bad mouthing everything about religion and religious people indiscriminately. There’s good and bad in just about everything on earth, but some people for whatever reason are very selective in what they internalize.

I’m not going to argue that faith in God caused these things, but faith in God certainly didn’t stop any of them either.
Then it should be clear to you that the people who were the cause of these atrocities either did not understand the Will of God, mainly due to the times in which they lived, or their faith was only rhetoric.

Faith in God and God’s Will can be easily misunderstood by our finite minds and will. It takes a great maturity of understanding to follow God’s truths. We have evolved a great deal in human understanding and compassion from ancient and medieval days, not perfectly, but somewhat improved.

If anything, people who know me claim I need to let emotion more into my thinking than the other way round.

I think your reasons for rejecting God are emotionally-based (but I’m not sure).

It was just a matter of scale. We had effective technology for committing atrocities on a mass scale in the the 20th century. So far in the 21st century however, despite the ever present menace of atheism there have been no atrocities committed on the scales of even several centuries ago.

Yes, and we used that technology effectively and efficiently knowing it would kill so many. And no it was not just a matter of scale, but a matter of how many people were explicitly and implicitly involved with an evil so tangible, one would think Hell had taken over. And to think they were supposed to be a people enlightened by reason. Make no mistake, posterity will view the twentieth century as by far the worst century for brutality and tyranny.

Aztecs, Maya, Inca. To be honest, I don’t see how Western culture at the time was less brutal. How many witches did Westerners burn? Nobody knows for sure, but estimates of the number of witches killed range from a hundred thousand to millions.

There were about 110 000 to 120 000 people killed in the witch hunts (this was mostly a Protestant phenomenon) in Europe. The estimates were not nor ever in the millions.

The Catholic faith/Church although an integral part of Western culture during that time, was still dealing with man’s proclivity to sin, I mean human nature is what it is, as such, kings and queens, and men of all ilk were still greedy, still power hungry and seeking to dominate, so yes, atrocities to an extent were going to be committed. However, the Church acted somewhat like a buffer in tempering these men (although She herself made mistakes) whereas from the time of the Reformation till the present day we see how man has made himself a “god”. It is due to this heigthened sense of self and the rejection of the true God, that we witnessed the evils that we did. The godlessness of Nazism and Communism reaped a godless society. It was this mentality that led to the brutality, more so than the technology that made it possible to kill so many.

Well, Catholics aren’t exactly practicing what they preach here. Catholics represent 24% of the US population but have 31% of abortions in the US. So this goes back to the point I’m trying to make. Faith in God is apparently not stopping people from doing these things.
Are Catholics acting out their faith? Are they being inundated with temptations that they are pervasively subjected to? Could it be that the moral relativism inherent in our modern times be the cause that has led to a decrease in morality? And is the culture we are surrounded by conducive to christian morality?

I would say you’ve been brain molded not brainwashed. When you’re started out very young, there’s nothing much to wash out of one’s brain.

At the time people start exposing their kids to dogma, they could equally be convinced that carnivorous elephants live in the woods of North America or a jolly magical elf delivers toys with flying reindeer.
And these words of comparison to my Faith were not at all disrespectful?

At the time people start exposing their kids to dogma, they could equally be convinced that carnivorous elephants live in the woods of North America or a jolly magical elf delivers toys with flying reindeer.

I think your reasons for rejecting God are emotionally-based (but I’m not sure).
I don’t reject God. I reject people’s claim of God. This wording is important. Since the idea of God is imbued with perfection, some religious people try to make atheism’s rejecting God instead of people’s claim of God somewhat akin to rejecting love, world peace, etc. I do not reject God. I reject people’s claim of God.
There were about 110 000 to 120 000 people killed in the witch hunts (this was mostly a Protestant phenomenon) in Europe.
Where is your evidence for it being mostly a Protestant phenomenon? Roman Catholics were hunting witches over a century before the Reformation. There were several Papal Bulls ordering witch inquisitions spanning centuries, and other documents from leading clergy warning of the danger posed by witches. There is evidence that the schism of the Reformation sent both sides hunting witches more than anywhere else in the fuzzy boundaries between Catholic and non Catholic lands.
However, the Church acted somewhat like a buffer in tempering these men (although She herself made mistakes)
In other words, there was no requirement for loss of religious belief or moral relativism to lead to such events.
The godlessness of Nazism and Communism reaped a godless society. It was this mentality that led to the brutality, more so than the technology that made it possible to kill so many.
It doesn’t seem like anyone wants the Nazi’s or the Communists on their team. They’re passed around like a hot potato. It’s more subtle than that, but it’s pointless to bicker about whose team they were on. Personally, I just see it as a shift in people’s casus belli. In previous centuries, if you were a power hungry brute, the best way to remain safe while others killed and died for you was to whip up religious xenophobia. Tell them that their enemy was evil in the eyes of God, maybe even throw in a promise of heaven to those who died in combat and you could start one of many crusades.

When Europeans got smart to that trick and were not so willing to kill or die for it, political ideology took its place. People killed and died in the name of fascism, communism, and democracy. Decades later after some victor’s justice and victor’s history, we’re ready to fight war after war to protect freedom and democracy. Exactly how we protect freedom and democracy with what we’re doing I don’t fathom.
Are Catholics acting out their faith? Are they being inundated with temptations that they are pervasively subjected to? Could it be that the moral relativism inherent in our modern times be the cause that has led to a decrease in morality? And is the culture we are surrounded by conducive to christian morality?
Moral relativism allows us to improve morals over time. We humans used to think it was perfectly acceptable to wage a war of conquest. A stronger nation would simply set its sights on a weaker one that was minding its own business. After killing and maiming a few tends of thousands or millions, the stronger nation would control or absorb the smaller nation. It was not that long ago that this conduct was not only considered acceptable, but noble and glorious. Today, no nation on earth would claim they are starting a war to control another nation, much less absorb it into their territory. That’s moral relativism.

Only some decades ago we thought it was a perfectly legitimate conduct of war to terror bomb civilian population centers. We killed innocent women, children, and elderly by the millions. We don’t do this today. Moral relativism. Centuries ago we considered chattel slavery perfectly OK. Now it’s an unpardonable crime. Moral relativism. Not so long ago we considered dueling to the death a reasonable way to settle some disputes. Today, not so much. Moral relativism.
