I have currently been arguing to an extent with someone who claims that “Marriage is medieval” “Marriage is just a label” and “Marriage is pointless” Can someone help me formulate some arguments against this. He’s an agnostic. Thanks.

With an agnostic? That would be very rough! You would have to say there are tax benefits! 😉

Well, I find that most agnostics are more interested in “converting” people to their way of thinking than learning what the other side thinks, and respecting their point of view. The “tolerance” crowd tends to be the most intolerant.

But if your friend is serious about learning why Christians and other groups want to protect traditional marriage, I would suggest the links that buffalo posted. 👍

On what basis does he assert the dogma “marriage is pointless”? I mean where is he coming from?

I came across some biological indicators that demonstrate that the body itself tends toward singular male-female relationships and stable rearing of children. For example:*All persons are the fruit of one man and one woman, which points to the natural order of a child raised by his or her parents, a family unit, a natural foundation for humanity. Properly functioning biology admits to no exceptions to this reality. In fact, once the female egg is fertilized by a sperm, a “cortical reaction” occurs which ensures only one sperm fertilizes the egg. Biology itself is a signpost to the order of one man and one woman, to its potency, that it is only this arrangement which “bears fruit.” … There is also science lending evidence to support the idea that sexual activity belongs to a committed relationship. For instance, a University of California-San Francisco study concluded that during such activity, the body releases chemicals like oxytocin, vasopressin, and endorphines that tend toward fortifying monogamous relationships.*More info here. 😉
