Hi!

I’m actually writing this for my boyfriend, who is converting from Baptist to Catholic on Saturday. We have been dating for over a year and this is a big step for us both as we are a very spiritual couple. To finally be able to share a common faith that we both feel strongly about will be a wonderful experience and we are both looking forward to it!

His biggest problem is choosing his confirmation saint. He already has two good saints in his given names, Gregory and Stephen.

Some info on him:

He is working on becoming a math teacher (we are both sophomores - almost juniors - in college). He enjoys playing guitar, music in general, reading, researching, logic, philosophy, video games, skateboarding, martial arts, acrobatics, hiking, and physical activities in general. He is a really funny, sweet, silly guy but he sometimes battles with feelings of depression or worthlessness, which I sometimes think may have been caused by his somewhat rocky family background. He is really into the idea of strong families, despite the fact that he hasn’t had the strongest of families himself; he always tells me that one thing he dreams of is having a strong family of our own someday.

Any saint ideas will be greatly appreciated! 🙂

An outstanding saint of the 20th century is St Pio. Padre Pio was a most extraordinarily gifted saint who promised ongoing care to those who asked his intercession. His prayers have great intercessory power with God and obtained numerous conversions and healings during life and after his death.

St Joseph…the man chosen by God to provide for the child Jesus and His mother had to be an amazing person to be chosen for this trust.

**St John **the Apostle, the beloved disciple, rested his head against Jesus’ heart at the Last Supper…and he was the only one of the twelve apostles who came to stand near Jesus at the foot of the Cross, the rest of them hid in fear. From the cross before He died, Jesus entrusted His mother into John’s care.

Please convey my congratulations to your boyfriend, and my prayers for his future life as Catholic.
Regards, Trishie

One idea is to find a Saint who’s “feast” is on his birthday. There are several on mine. Well, they are only “blessed” as of right now, but I still consider them as my patron saints. Actually, they were Carmelite nuns put to death during the French Revolutions. And, it’s the day after the feast of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel. So, I sort of consider all carmelites as my saints. Plus all of those who are named Elizabeth (my middle name).

Does that help any?

Congratulation to your boyfriend. My husband converted from Southern Baptist in 202. I second the recomendation of Joseph, a good husband and father. He will help your boyfriend in his desire for a strong family.

He sounds a little like me. Maybe a franciscan saint? - St.Francis, St.Clare, St.Bonaventure (because of philosophy).

Okay, here are some ideas.

Saint Juniper - you will not find much info on him on the web. If you get the book Little Flowers of St. Francis you can read about him. The book is written in an old English and it takes a while to get used to that.

Saint Maximilian Kolbe - he gave his life in exchange for a man who cried out, “My wife! My children! I will never see them again.” The man had been selected to die in a starvation chamber at the death camp of Auschwitz. The book Kolbe: Saint of the Immaculate is a good read.

St. Patrick - the saint is more than his day (by the way St. Patrick’s Day is the day he died). St. Patrick was kidnapped as a teenage boy and taken to Ireland. He then spent 6 years as a slave shepherd. With plenty of time to pray he would often pray 100 times in the morning and again 100 times at night. He walked away after a vision from God and found his way home. Later, after becoming a bishop, he returned to the land of his captivity and the results continue until today in Ireland.

Saint Daniel the Stylite - this saint, at age 42, decided to live atop a pillar. You can read more about him hear: saints.sqpn.com/saintd41.htm

Saint John Vianney - is a very admirable preist. The road he took to become a priest was a long and difficult one. He would sometimes hear confessions for over 20 hours a day. The devil would actually attack him at times.
marianland.com/saints024.html (The third book down is the one I read; very good read.)

Those are a few. Right now I have to go to Holy Thursday mass.

God bless

p.s. Please let us know which names he choses.

St. Isidore of Sevilla. wrote many text books. made schools. and monastaries. a head full of knowing. feast day April 4. He is a good Saint for being holy and learning. together. as one.

Thanks for all your suggestions! He ended up choosing St. Joseph.

Please continue to pray for him, though, as some people in his family are unexpectedly not taking too kindly to his decision.

St. Joseph is a wonderful saint. Your boyfriend will be under strong guidance and St. Joseph’s prayers are powerful. I will pray for him and for those that disagree with his decision. May he shed light on the Truth of the Catholic faith to them.

To anyone else who is ever in need of a patron saint, I recommend praying and listening. I truly believe that if we just listen, the saint will choose us.

My dear friend

It’s great to hear you are both spiritual people and embracing a common faith which is the true faith. I’ll pray for you both. As suggested it’s good to choose based on your name or birthday, but you can choose any you like. A great website you can peruse to choose one is catholic.org/saints/
It’s great to have devotion to your Blessed Mother, St Joseph and Blessed Michael the Archangel as well.
Be sure to name your guardian angels and pray and talk to them continually throughout the day. All the best and God bless you both:)
