Hi everyone, I need help choosing godparents. There aren’t many Catholics in my family, and the only one who could possibly be a godparent had a vasectomy. Should I not choose him despite the drama that might cause in my family? And the only other options that I have are acquaintances from church whom I know are solidly Catholic. Any advice?

You don’t have to tell them why you aren’t choosing them.

One of our parishioners put it to her relatives this way, “Family, you all have a very special role in our child’s life by virtue of being her auntie, uncle, cousin, etc. We want to give her two more special people in her life and that’s why we’ve asked A & B to be her godparents. We want to enlarge her circle of special people so I hope you’ll be happy for her and see it as a good thing.”

I don’t know if you’re in RCIA, so my experience is only good for that, but I thought I’d share it anyway.

I didn’t know many Catholics either when I started RCIA, and the ones I did know were a bit lukewarm, and I did not want lukewarm Godparents. So I prayed to God and asked Him to give me good, devout Godparents. My Godfather ended up being the first person I became acquainted with at my Church, and my Godmother is a fellow Sacristan (an experience I would recommend for any convert to experience).

In RCIA we have until a few weeks before Easter Vigil to find a sponsor/Godparents, so if this is your situation, you have time. But either way, pray!
