A very good friend of mine who is a Jehovah’s Witness, with whom I frequently have fruitful discussions of morality and religion with, has invited me to attend a JW conference this weekend. In the past, she’s given me many books and pamphlets about JW beliefs (all of which have–praise God–only served to bolster my faith in the Catholic Church. However, I think it’s about time I begin introducing her to Catholic theology, and I could use a little advice, especially if you’ve talked with JW’s before yourself or if you’ve ever attended any of their events.
  1. What kind of questions can I ask her to get her thinking and questioning her beliefs?
  2. What JW beliefs are easiest to debunk and/or which ought to be addressed first?
  3. How can I introduce Catholic thought to her effectively?
  4. What kind of stereotypes and misbeliefs do JW’s usually have about Catholics?
  5. What resources should I point her to so she can get more answers?
  6. Are there any books you know of answering JW beliefs from a Catholic perspective? (She’s not especially web-savvy, so I’d rather not send her to a website if I can avoid it.)
Any other tips, ideas, warnings, or anecdotes you can share would be greatly appreciated! I want to represent well what Catholicism teaches, defending the truth with charity, but I need to be well-prepared!

I think you are wasting your time. Her sole goal is to convert you. You took the bait by going to one of their assemblies, and you can be sure that she will never set foot in a Catholic church, let alone attend Mass with you.

You’d be better off talking about the weather.

Honestly.

And don’t return to any more of their assemblies.

I disagree with the above. If it’s God’s will, she’ll come to find the truth.

I’m at work so I have to make this brief, but check one of the threads I started about my daughter giving info to a JW friend. They gave me a LOT of info on that thread that really helped.

Whatever you do, just heed this advice from the Apostle Paul:
*
“Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone.*” (Colossians 4:6)

My next statement to her would be: 1. What you are trying to tell me, is that God would allow the lie of the teachings of the Catholic Church to exist for 1800 or so years until your guy came along? Sorry, but I’m not buying it. 2.Your faith is agaist participating in war. I believe in a just war, like WW2 and that God will use the good people of this world to fight evil. 3. They do not believe in the Trinity. How can you deny this? You could go on and on. I do think though, that like the other person said, you are wasting your time. As for going to her church outing, I wouldn’t go. Not interested. Nothing for me there. I have it all in my own church.
