My son came to me and said that a woman could get $5000 for selling her eggs. He thought that this was a good idea because it helped someone who otherwise could not have a child, to become pregnant. I know this is wrong, but had a hard time explaining why it’s wrong. Can anyone direct me to authoritative articles on this subject and others like it?

Thank you.

From the Compendium of the Catechism – issued by Pope Benedict XVI
  1. Why are artificial insemination and artificial fertilization immoral?
2373-2377

They are immoral because they dissociate procreation from the act with which the spouses give themselves to each other and so introduce the domination of technology over the origin and destiny of the human person. Furthermore, heterologous insemination and fertilization with the use of techniques that involve a person other than the married couple infringe upon the right of a child to be born of a father and mother known to him, bound to each other by marriage and having the exclusive right to become parents only through each another.

Donation is already gravely wrong (for such is not something we can donate and for the reasons above etc) and of course “selling” such is further wrong …(as is “selling babies”)

How old is your son?

Full explanations of the immorality of this can be found in the Vatican documents Donum Vitae and Dignitas Personae. Might be over his head if it is a youngster we are talking about.

Reducing a child to a commodity that is bought and sold is wrong. Children are gifts from God, not a product to be manufactured and purchased. That is, in its essence, slavery by a different name regardless of whether or not the child is treated like a prince. The child has a right to be born from and grow up with its natural parents in its natural family, not to be sold away to someone else.
