Help Finding Modest Clothes

When I was a teenager one of those shirts would’ve cost me half a paycheck. The only kids I knew of that spent that much money on clothes were the ones with very well-off parents (who paid for them).

Truly. I just got back from Wally World where I bought a couple new summer plaid shirts for nine bucks each. Nothing in the least bit sleazy or even frumpy. Just cute, casual. And I saw plenty more where that came from. Bottoms for the same price or up to fifteen. You have to search but it’s worth it.

Wally World even has some of those floaty blouses very similar to the ones on the Way Expensive But Beautiful site. With a cami underneath, no problem at all.

If you don’t buy a lot of clothing, it’s worth spending more money on quality, non-trendy, staples (ie: blazers, LBD, skirts, shoes, etc). You’ll wear them often, and they’ll last you several years. (I cannot stress how much high quality shoes are worth the investment. My black leather pumps from Sofft, are sooo comfy I can stand forever during Mass with them.)

look for thrift stores, garage sales, and church rummage sales in affluent neighborhoods where people give away or sell on consignment good quality clothing, you would be surprised how far you can stretch your clothing dollar, again, look for basics from quality brands, that fit, or take them to the dry cleaner for tailoring, you will look like you spend thousands on clothing.

I’m 17, which is probably close to the same age as you so I figure I’ll offer my thoughts as well.

I’m not sure exactly why you find dressing modestly to be so difficult? I know it may not always be easy, but I’ve never found it to be too much of a challange?

Here’s a quick run down of where my clothing is from -

Since I pay for my clothes myself, I tend to be pretty picky when it comes to prices. If I buy something new then it usually comes from Old Navy, Forever 21, or Target. All three of those stores have GREAT sales and clearance. While I’m not saying all their clothing is modest, I’d say msotly everything has the potential to be modest.

Camis go great with low cut tops and also provide a bit more color for plain shirts. Tank tops? No problem! Pair that with a cute cardigan or sweater and you’re good to go! Pretty tight fitting shirt? A simple cardigan or sweater can give you that extra coverage.

Where I struggle the most is probably dresses. While sleeveless dresses can easily be fixed with a cardigan or sweater, there’s not a whole lot you can do for a dress that’s too short. Forever 21 has great leggings for about $5 and Target has footless tights for around the same price. I’m not a huge fan of the leggings that stop a few inches below your knee, but I do like the leggings/tights that are footed or stop at the ankles - but that’s just personal preference. Also, for a more formal setting, black nylon/pantyhose look great. I wear them primarily in the winter. I have a few dresses that hit just above the knee and dark nylons don’t draw attention to that.

Ok, well I think that’s about it. If you have any questions let me know! Dressing modestly isn’t too hard, I promise! It just takes practice and soon enough it becomes so natural you don’t even have to think about it!

I shop at JC Penny. I’m 21, but I tend to shop in the womans section instead of the teenage section. I don’t like to dress flamboyantly, so this works well for me. And I don’t look like an older lady! lol

Please don’t tell young attractive girls to shop at Muslim stores. I have seen these oufits and I would never wear them. They are sooo unattractive. Please stop being so scrupulous about your attire. You know what looks good on you, so stop worrying. The Vatican if full of art work that to the normal eye is obscene, yet it is still there. Give yourself a breather. It breaks my heart to see all of these young girls so worried about so-called modesty.

The people that tell you your skirt is too short or your heels are too high, just can’t wear them because they do not have the figure for it. I think a slim person is never immodest in a high style outfit. It is the overweight person who has a problem with a young beautiful girl who gives them a sermon on the mount for their attire. Just MHO. If you look good in it and it is not vulgar - wear it! God bless you, from a person who truly knows fashion!!!

It “breaks your heart” that some young girls try to dress in a dignified and respectful manner, as per instructed in the Bible and the Catechism, to avoid inciting sexual thoughts in others?



I’m 18, and my favorite stores are GAP, Target, H&M, Old Navy, Modcloth.com, Forever 21, Anthropologie [which is pretty expensive but has good sale prices], and thrift stores. It does depend on how strict your standards of modesty are, but I can always find nice shirts/dresses/skirts/pants at these stores that I consider modest. You might have to do a bit of hunting, but there definitely are modest clothes out there. Don’t be afraid to go into stores that don’t seem to be “your style” either. I once found the cutest ivory lace blouse in an old ladies’ shop, and got tons of compliments on it.

I would think pretty nearly ANY store would have your definition of “modest” clothes.

Just don’t get something that is too short, too tight, or too low. Most stores have a wide enough variety of clothes to where they wouldn’t all be what I mentioned above… so I don’t see why you’d be having such a hard time?

I’m not into the whole “modesty” thing though (at least not in the sense that you use it), so I guess I can’t give them best advice.

I think the Muslim skirts look really good on me?
I also wear shorts etc. It has nothing to do with being scrupulous. I really, honestly think that long, flowing clothes are beautiful. Is there something wrong with that?

Just to add, it is EXTREMELY rare that I go out in public wearing one of these skirts, which are beautifully designed, that at least one person does not comment and ask where they can get one!

That was an uncalled-for remark on her part. What does being overweight have to do with a young woman wanting to appear modest?

Are we to serve the dictates of fashion, or serve the Lord?

My personal style isn’t Amish, isn’t stiff, isn’t ultra-mode, but cute and comfortable. But there are many personal styles that are also modest. Prefer style to fashion always and you are on the right path.

Chronomanautica yes it does break my heart to think that so many young girls are so upset about scrupulous people such as yourselves that would deny the joy of having fun with fashion. No one wants anyone to be a immodest in their clothing but, come on give me a break, these young girls want to have fun with fashion, something that I am sure you are lost about.Please don’t place your strict codes on the younger generation.
