Hi all. What are everyone’s thoughts on the best online scripture study resources? I’d like to find some good quality programs that have a structured & coherent approach to scripture study - ideally inexpensive!

Hi, Finn!

You might try Googling Scott Hahn’s Bible courses, which are completely free. His Augustine Institute offers quite a few courses at no charge. I think these are the only ones available (and they’re the best around!).

Warning: avoid the St Thomas Bible courses–they’re a ripoff!!!

You might try looking at iTunesU. They frequently have parochial colleges and universities that offer lecture series covering various books of the Bible. You will often see Old Testament and New Testament survey courses, as well as Hermaneutical Course offerings. Also, courses in Systematic Theology frequently provide a good overall framework about the major Christian doctrines and how they fit together.

Hi, Loyal!

This “school” is a fraud! I researched it and all the reviews are highly negative!

Ah I’d be careful with what you read about it. You have to apply yourself with Dr Marshall’s courses. I completed one of them and I was highly impressed by the knowledge I gained.

He also makes good podcasts.

What are you looking for? study for yourself or to lead a group?

Thanks for all the responses - study for self.

Here’s a link to Scott Hahn’s site. If you scroll about halfway down you’ll come to a section titled “Online Studies”. These are the free ones and they’re very good.

He offers 4 separate studies:
The Lamb’s Supper: The Bible and the Mass (contains 6 lessons)
‘He Must Reign’: The Kingdom of God in Scripture (6 lessons)
Covenant Love: Introducing the Biblical Worldview (6 lessons)
Holy Queen: The Mother of God in the Word of God (6 lessons)

Each lesson contains lengthy commentary and questions at the end of the lesson.

Taylor Marshall’s writings are enjoyable and he seems to be a smart guy, but his school has been somewhat lax and unresponsive about removing people from the monthly credit card billing if they decide they want to quit or can’t afford the courses any more.

If you can read or watch his stuff for free, it’s worth taking a look. Just don’t sign up for anything with your credit card.

Do it yourself…🙂

Here is a free online Catholic Scripture study (endorsed by Dr. Scott Hahn)

http://www.agapebiblestudy.com

It has references to the Catechism so have a Catechism handy. Pick a book to study, print out the lessons at your leisure. I would also buy the corresponding Catholic Commentary on Sacred Scripture and you are all set…

All it would cost you is the price of the commentary book and the paper to print out the lessons.

A study for purchasing that I like would be Dr. Brant Pitre’s Mass readings study that he puts out each week. You get a 14 day free trial to check it out and I believe it costs 39.95 a quarter.

I didn’t know this though. It’s upsetting but I’m not going to worry. I’m finishing my degree up at an actual university which requires me to attend class so I don’t feel cheated, just disappointed.

See, I paid for my course up front because I took an additional job to make the money. I didn’t realize that happened to other students of his.

If you get something out of the course, and you aren’t overbilled or cheated, you haven’t wasted your money.
You will get in return the course insights you hoped to get.
Be at peace.

There are also a lot of people who do not read the “fine print” on cancellation clauses of agreements and do not go about it properly when they choose to cancel, so perhaps the fault is partly their own.
