I’m trying to find orthodox Catholic Universities in the US for my daughter. I have two for sure: Franciscan University of Steubenville and Ave Maria University in Florida.

Please help me with other choices, but only good orthodox schools. For instance, Notre Dame and Boston College do not qualify. Too secular.

Gotta stump for my state: Christendom College in Front Royal, Virginia. Super solidly Catholic!

Benedictine College, Atchison, KS (GO RAVENS!)

Mandatum colleges are the best bet. I want to go to the University of Dallas!

I wish you wouldn’t dismiss Notre Dame. I found it to be very faithful, and I met a number of very devout, orthodox Catholic friends there, including my husband.

Water rises to meet its own. If your daughter wants orthodox friends, solid liturgies, holy confessors, etc, she can find them at ND.

About 20 minutes north of the border in British Columbia: Redeemer Pacific College.

rpcollege.bc.ca/

Professors take an oath to the Magesterium each year.

nodito,

What you say is all well and good however:

Until ND boots the likes of McBrien and Scott Appleby (and others who are hardly loyal to the Cuhrch) – I would not take a chance sending any of my kids there.

(not to mention the fact that ND has the disgusting V-Monologues play on campus [endorsed by the president as “academic freedom”], and the “Queer Film Festival”)

Sorry, qmvsimp is right on this one.

I was going to suggest St Mary’s College, right across the street from Notre Dame. 🙂 It’s my alma mater. I loved the all-women’s environment, the faculty were awesome, and I liked that it was small enough that I didn’t feel I was living in a rat maze. There are still nuns living on campus, some even teaching. 🙂

We did go over to Notre Dame for Mass often…with all the different dorms with their own Masses, it was easy to find an orthodox/conservative environment.

However, my husband attended Notre Dame, and he agrees with the OP that it was very secular and not Catholic in his experience. Too much emphasis on football and drinking and other activities. St Mary’s seemed to avoid a lot of that, just by being across the road.

 I didn’t know that! We don’t get any alumni mailings for my DH, so i had no idea things had changed that much. I know back when i was at SMC, in the 90’s, the gay and lesbian students at ND were mad because ND wouldn’t officially endorse their organization, so they couldn’t meet on campus. And when George H.W. Bush spoke at the ND commencement in 92 there were some protests and my own brother wore a black armband.

Sounds like ND has rolled over. 😦 Makes me wonder what St Mary’s is up to!

I understand what you’re saying. Respectfully, though, I think the publicity that stuff like that gets is way overblown. You’re talking about two weekends out of the year. I found it very easy to avoid the Vagina Monologues (which are no longer permitted to be held on campus) as well as the Queer Film festival (and ND doesn’t recognized a GLBT group). And in addition, you get the benefit of reading all the solid orthodox apologetic arguments against viewing these things which flood the campus newspaper every time something like that happens.

As for McBrien and Appleby, I managed fours years within their respective departments and never once had a class with either. I wasn’t even trying to avoid them, it’s just that with so many professors available, your odds of getting a bad apple are much smaller.

Although I recognize and admire this man’s concern for his daughter’s spiritual welfare, there’s also a cost associated with going to a smaller institution. You miss out on things like the Edith Stein Conference, having access to the most masses held on campus every day, the presence of the Basilica and the grotto, the option of joining several liturgical choirs, etc.

There’s something to be said for choosing a larger Catholic university, even if it isn’t flawless, for the sake the other educational, social, and yes, spiritual benefits that one can only receive there. Like all colleges, Notre Dame is what you make of it.

Does ND require its theology professors to take the Mandatum? If not, why not?

I have no idea. But I do believe that, per canon 812, the mandatum is an obligation of the professor, not of the university.

Very nice posts. ND does not require the Mandantum.

Regarding posts defending Notre Dame - Yes, you make good points. But those same points can be made about any college. The well-informed and educated othodox Catholic student will find the right people and classes at any college.

However, young people are very impressionable. I fell into all sorts of sin and heresy while at college. Yes, every college has those sorts of temptations, but not all have the same level.

I am looking for a school where a huge majority will teach the faith orthodoxly, and where the huge majority of peers will frown on immoral behavior. Notre Dame is not that institution.

Thanks for standing up for ND…I don’t like how these threads seem to turn into “bash Notre Dame” every time the topic comes up. Yes, there are problems, but Notre Dame is hardly the den of heterodoxy some people paint it as. As well as all the great things nodito mentioned, the Extraordinary Form Mass is celebrated on campus every Sunday while school is in session. Every time I’ve been it’s always been well attended by both students and professors. The pro-life club is also very active and sent a big group to the March for Life, which included faculty and staff.

And I haven’t heard a peep this year about those awful Vagina Monologues. 🤷 So please, don’t automatically assume everything you’ve heard about Notre Dame being un-Catholic is true.
