Next week, I will be the cantor. In our parish the cantor writes their own. Since I’ve never done it before what are, some websites or resources I can use for the melodies of the verses?

Thanks,
srfnolen

Writes their own what?

AFAIK, there isn’t anything that a cantor should be ‘writing’ at all.

You’re a catechumen serving as a cantor at Mass? And you’re being asked to write something? What are you supposed to write?

If you are speaking of chanting the psalm…OCP has a series called Respond and Acclaim that has simple melodies for a chant-style word fro word version of every psalm in the liturgical year. Costs around 8 bucks.
Other than possibly this, I can’t imagine what you’re talking about.

They come up with their own melody. The music from the misalette is used for the response.

Hope that helps.

That’s the strangest thing I’ve ever heard! Are you sure they’re writing their own melodies and not simply using chants you’re unfamiliar with? I can’t imagine the pastor or liturgy director saying “Hey you’re on for next week. Write your own chant for the psalm.” Is there a music director in the parish? You need to speak with him or her.

Our Spanish choir used to do this. Until I bought them Responda y Aclama.
I’m telling you, many parishes just spend on the music program. They just “wing it”.
Sad, but true.
They buy the Coro the proper materials now, but they still get songs off of YouTube in Spanish. Which I have to either veto or approve.

When I asked about the music for the verses, I was told ‘to do my own’. We are a small parish and there is no music director as such.

Is that available in an English version? That’s somthing which sounds good to me. The cantors in our parish to a great job. You would never know they may not even know what they are going to sing until they are at the ambo. It’s something I have to work around especially with my personality!🙂

Wow. Just wow.
I understand your opinion. I like organization and by the book concepts so I was initially lost. Oddly enough it really turns out very good. You would never know they are actually doing what they do. I would like very much to visit your diocese. I’ve watched mass from there many times. Maybe I can assist my parish and make recommendations which will improve their methods.

As I said in my first reply, yes. It’s called Respond and Acclaim.

Get Respond and Acclaim from the OCP website. It has all the melodies written out.

Wow. Just wow.
I took your response to heart when discussing the job of cantor. I did my research, found a music score and even sang the Pentecost Sunday sequence which from the reaction I received must have not ever been done or at least not recently. (Our parish was only established in the 1990’s.) I felt proud to deliver my utmost for His glory. Thanks for not letting me just “wing it”. It was awesome and I can’t wait to do it again!

How amazing! That’s the one I found! Great minds think alike. ~SN
You’ve been involved in church music for what, like 3 weeks? And you found the most awesome website right away? Good for you!! A lot of parishes do use “Respond and Acclaim” but I think the Chabanel is more fitting to the character of Mass.
Best wishes!!
