I am looking for conversion stories of former Adventists that have converted to or reverted to Catholicism.

Comments on how you got free of:
  • The law, especially Sabbath requirements
  • Belief in soul sleep
  • The belief that the Catholic Church is the Whore of Babylon
  • The erroneous belief in a so called “True Church” yet to be revealed
A list of false prophecies could also help.

Thank you in advance for any comments you can share on the foregoing or other aspects you believe will help.

Peace!

Sorry I didn’t see this sooner.

There are many former Seventh-day Adventists, now Catholic around.

Here’s some info:

The webpage has information and stories about Adventists who became catholic.

Former SDA pastor becomes Catholic:

forums.catholic-questions.org/showthread.php?t=232806&highlight=Former+Adventist

I became dissatisfied with SDA teachings while attending an SDA college in the early 80s. For years I avoided discussion with SDAs other than close family (only because those discussions were unavoidable). In what few discussions came about, a point many Adventists tried to make, was that attitudes have ‘changed’, adventism has ‘matured’ and that many of the issues the led to my leaving are no longer around.

Well, things do change, the internet made discussion both more accessible and more anonymous, so I started conversations. (anonymity is a big deal when you have a lot of 3rd and 4th generation Adventists in the family, many of them working for their denomination.)

What I have found here and in other forums around the internet, is that not much has changed from what I can see. It is maybe packaged differently, prettier wrappings, more rounded corners and extra padding around the sharp edges… but I can’t see that anything has really changed.

Things that began to push me out of my comfort zone to consider that maybe as an Adventist I wasn’t following the Truth after all…

As I came to the Adventist school as an upperclassman transfer, I had a great many religion courses to take that were required classes but of course were not available at the state university I had attended. I had 12 religion credits that first semester. Four classes. Each class had a different style, but the substance was the same: “Catholicism is not Christian because they believe…” “The Catholic Church is evil and apostate because history records they did …” Almost everything fit into those two categories, just fill in the blank with the specific details.

I began to have a problem in class though. Especially the first category. One professor devoted an entire hour to a lecture on ‘Mary worship’ and elaborated extensively on it and why it was wrong. As a kid I had attended a Catholic gradeschool and as was usual at that time, we attended daily mass and memorized our catechism lessons out of the Baltimore Catechism. What the Adventist professor was teaching was not what I remembered learning. At the end of class, when there was opportunity for questions, I brought up that the Catholic church does not teach about Mary as he had just told the class, expecting some reasonable answer. His response was that everything the Catholic church publishes to teach its doctrine are deceptive lies to make things seem ok, but that the reality is the Catholic church teaches ‘Mary Worship’ because it is really pagan goddess worship disguised as Christianity. He then refused further questioning in class on the subject.

As the semester continued, this became a very familiar pattern.
“History says…” but what I remembered from secular history classes was very different. “the Catholic church believes…” but what I remembered was very different. I thought I was remembering wrong, so I began researching Catholic beliefs, after all I only had a few months of elementary school level instruction. Every thing I found confirmed what I remembered.

Adventists present a very airtight, logical argument for their beliefs. It falls apart though, when compared to actual facts. They misrepresent Catholic history and doctrinal beliefs. They also present a biased view of history. Another reason I left, is that I tried to bolster my Adventist beliefs by writing a paper on all the historical dates used in their prophecy time lines using secular sources to document them. I found BIG problems there on way to many points for this post. So, investigate **investigate **investigate, that is the way out of Adventism.

Academically trustworthy, secular sources of information and history amply discredit their doctrines. Examination of Catholic doctrines and beliefs show that the Adventist claims against the Church as false.

There are endless discussions in the forum over sabbath, state of the dead and other adventist talking points.

Most Adventists will believe that as a Catholic, it is their duty to convert you away from the Catholic church. They will use bible studies, and invitations, and even ‘love bombing’ which is a tactic of being very friendly and welcoming to the intended convert.

Please pray for your friend and inform yourself about your own Catholic faith so that you can defend your beliefs.

God Bless, and always feel free to ask questions, either in the forum or through the message feature.

Ok,

All that said above,

You friend will quite likely not be open to being indundated with information. It is very necessary to be well informed yourself… but you have to go slow with your friend.

Depending on her (his?) background, it is likely she has a lot of her social and emotional life bound up in being Adventist. Adventists typically have church activities as the centerpiece of their social life.

If she is from a multigenerational SDA family, it will be even more difficult for her. Adventists often attended SDA schools and many even come from mostly SDA communities.Often, they won’t listen to anything negative about Adventism, as a form of emotional self defense.

Adventists leaving Adventism often have a lot of family and emotional baggage.

For me, I think the first step in reaching an active Adventist, is to simply be a Christian. Be sure in your beliefs, and be able to give a defense for them politely but firmly. My personal experience is that many Adventists do not see Catholics as Christians, at best, they see them as well intended but missled and in need of the “truth”.

Also from personal experience…

As an adventist, I was taught to befriend potential converts as a means of converting them. Its not uncommon for potential converts to be “lovebombed” by the adventist congregation. Not saying this is the case with your friend but I thought I would mention it. Many people are swayed to the Adventist church by the camaraderie… Then they often leave again just as quickly because once they are safely ‘in’, attention turns to the new potential converts.

God Bless!

First, I had to escape the authority of Ellen G. White. Once I found out that she did not meet the test of a prophet, I was able to examine her teachings without feeling like I was being unfaithful to what God wanted. All Christians recognize some form of authority in their church, be it the founder, current pastor, or governing body (Why some people get mad over the Magesterium is beyond me, heh).

In all of Christian history before Adventism, there haven’t been any worldwide churches which worshipped the Lord on Saturday. I looked at the groups that the SDA church claims are their predecessors. They all worshipped on Sunday. The Waldensians and Albiginans or something like that (In fact, the Waldensians still exist today in Italy! Struck me as a bit odd, really). The burden of proof for maintaining the Hebrew Sabbath in the presence of the New Covenant rests completely on Ellen White…and she can’t pass the simple biblical test of a prophet. It really is a matter of the Authority of Interpretation of the Holy Scriptures. Should I trust a false prophet to interpret scripture for me? To set out the laws of faith? No, I will not.

I began to have questions about Authority, God given Authority. Who had it? Who could settle these issues? Who could weigh in with the Wisdom of the Lord and help me? =P This is where my search honestly began for the One Church, the Kingdom of the Lord, the Bride of Christ, the Body of the Lord.

My search inluded all major protestant sects, Sceintology, and some of the Occult. Because of my SDA upbringing, I could not seriously consider the Catholic Church, even though when I was in the Military I had stumbled upon EWTN and Mother Angelica’s program. She caused me to rethink my postition that Catholics were defacto evil, but I still couldn’t really believe what the Church taught. Thank God for His patience and mercy with me.

Anywho, during my journey home, I heard the most compelling argument that I had ever heard in my life. The old covenant was external and did not have the power to change the heart of man. It didn’t really have to power to make you a son rather than a servant. The old covenant pointed toward the new. The old sabbath pointed toward the new. In the new covenant, the Lord gives us the power and the right to become His family. The new sabbath is not the first day of the week, though it looks like it. It is actually the eighth day…it is the fullfillment of the old…an eternal moment in Mass, always present at the foot of the cross. There is sure to be someone here who can explain this far, far better than I can. I have the words in my mind, but I have a hard time getting them out onto this page. Will somebody come and explain the Eighth day a bit better than I?

The Sabbath of the new covenant is an eternal moment. I’m not sure how to explain this any better.
  • Belief in soul sleep
Yeah, the SDA belief comes from a text “The dead know nothing.” Unfortunately, I think that this is a failure to correctly interrpret the text. I believe that the correct interrpretation is along the lines of the fact that the dead really aren’t granted any supernatural knowledge of the earth once they die. Please remember that the Lord only spoke of people being dead if they were spiritually dead. The living only appear to have died when their bodies passed away. Honestly, the dead don’t know anything special beyond their own idiocy in failing to strive to live in grace, so why bother trying to contact them? [If my interpretation is incorrect, I yield to the Church]

There are so many verses in Holy Scripture which speak of what happens after you die. Seriously, find them. I have a hard time understanding why I could not really comprehend them while I was an SDA member. Honestely, if I follow a false prophet, I am the blind following the blind. E. G. White and I both fell into a pit. /sigh.

Getting away from the authority of Mrs. White is the most important step you can take in trying to understand what is true and what is false. Answer the question of authority first.
  • The belief that the Catholic Church is the Whore of Babylon
This is the pure, unadaltered Grace of God! I absolutely could not believe that the Church was in fact His kingdom, His family unless God Himself touched my soul and caused me to open my heart. This is the work of God in my heart… My intellect soon followed in the few years afterward.

It all started with EWTN and Mother Angelica (may the Lord keep this woman with Him in Grace forever…seriously, I pray for her every morning, evening, and night. You should too). I saw a woman in a nun’s habit while flipping through the channels. I was shocked that a Catholic Nun was so wise, honestly. …so wise and so kind. I could feel her kindness pouring through the TV. Later that week (I think), I was at the bookstore and saw a copy of the Catechism. I picked it up and opened it. I’m not sure how, but I ended up in the section describing Love. I had never in my life read or heard such a description. I said to myself. “How can satan’s church say something so beautiful in describing love?” I honestly said that to myself, heh. That has stuck in my mind throughout the years.

That’s what started it all. Well, the Lord started it, but He used these things and these people to open my heart and my mind to Him and to His family.

Over the course of six years I studied the Church. One doctrinal objection after another fell away. I finally started RCIA. I did not complete it. I had an intellectual understanding of Our Blessed Mother and the Communion of the Saints, but I did not believe with God given faith, I think. I don’t recall what happened, really, but I didn’t finish RCIA that year.

Something changed after that time. I really went off the deep end with my life for a few years. When God drew me back through His Vicar, I realized that I believed everything the Church taught. I don’t know how that happened. I really have no clue… I think that maybe God gave me the faith to believe. I was not desperate to believe anything, nor was I even looking for God anymore. I had given up everything. Nothing in life held any attraction for me. I don’t care about anything anymore…except God and His family. …and I don’t even know how that came about, really.

. I am certainly not a holy, pious man, even though I want to be (it is the only way to see Him…be holy as he is). I don’t want to give you that impression. I have committed such sins against God and my fellow humans that I could not feel forgiveness when I prayed. I could not feel His forgiveness…like I was praying to a wall before I quit praying altogether…before I quit pretending to be Christian, even. I’m sure there are many, many like me.

When God drew me back (for keeps this time), He let me experience something that I had never even dreamed of before. I couldn’t pray, really. I copied some prayer list from a confraternity. Psalm 51, 54, 119, Angelus, and a couple of other prayers. I started praying these prayes every morning and every evening. At times, it felt like God was standing right beside me… I had about a month of pure, palpable Grace… (that’s how I know that it’s for keeps this time…I want His Grace, HIs life, His love). You won’t believe me, but even my skin felt hot. It was unreal! I didn’t even know such a state of being existed!!! How do I get back?! HOW?! I search and study constantly, even though I fail frequently. I fail to do what is right and good. It’s like there is a war in my mind and heart. It rages. St. Paul talks about it alot in Holy Scripture. I take some solace in his words.

I discovered Dr. Hahn, Fr. Corapi, Fr. Groschell (sp?), Fr. Pacwa, Karl Keating, and Tim Staples. I’ve spent at least a couple thousand on tapes and books. I found out how to live in Grace. I found the Bride of Christ. I found the Family of the Living God. This is the pearl. How did I find it? …and I wasn’t even looking this time. The Lord’s ways are strange.

Looking back over what has happened so far in my life I can see how He has brought change through sufferring. I can see how things are working toward my good. …and I understand that much more suffering is required before my body dies.
  • The erroneous belief in a so called “True Church” yet to be revealed
This was never an issue for me, so I can’t really speak to this question.
A list of false prophecies could also help.

You are welcome. I hope that I didn’t sound to weird here. I’ve tried to be as honest to you as possible.

Here is an amazing fact. A quote from Ellen G. White:

General Conference in Session Highest Authority –

"I have often been instructed by the Lord that no man’s judgment should be surrendered to the judgment of any other one man. Never should the mind of one man or the minds of a few men be regarded as sufficient in wisdom and power to control the work and to say what plans shall be followed. But when, in a General Conference, the judgment of the brethren assembled from all parts of the field is exercised, private independence and private judgment must not be stubbornly maintained, but surrendered. Never should a laborer regard as a virtue the persistent maintenance of his position of independence, contrary to the decision of the general body.
At times, when a small group of men entrusted with the general management of the work have, in the name of the General Conference, sought to carry out unwise plans and to restrict God’s work, I have said that I could no longer regard the voice of the General Conference, represented by these few men, as the voice of God. But this is not saying that the decisions of a General Conference composed of an assembly of duly appointed, representative men from all parts of the field should not be respected. God has ordained that the representatives of His church from all parts of the earth, when assembled in a General Conference, shall have authority. The error that some are in danger of committing is in giving to the mind and judgment of one man, or of a small group of men, **the full measure of authority and influence that God has vested in His church in the judgment and voice of the General Conference assembled **to plan for the prosperity and advancement of His work.
Code:
When this power, which God has placed in the church, is accredited wholly to one man, and he is invested with the authority to be judgment for other minds, then the true Bible order is changed. Satan's efforts upon such a man's mind would be most subtle and sometimes well-nigh overpowering, for the enemy would hope that through his mind he could affect many others. **Let us give to the highest organized authority in the church **that which we are prone to give to one man or to a small group of men.--Testimonies, Vol. 9, pp. 260, 261. {ChL 1.5}”
My, that sounds very Papal of her does it not? Especially as you read where she refers to herself and her instruction from the Lord, and her decisions, and her use of the personal pronoun “I”. Interesting that SDAs look to her word and visions as an authority. And the General Conference assembled as “the highest organized authority in the church”. So why the criticism of the Pope and Bishiops assembled as the Magesterium?

Here we have the SDA church claiming the God ordained and established structure of church authority as revealed in the Bible. And how long have they been claiming this authority? Well, somewhere between today and 164 years ago.

The Catholic church has claimed the God ordained and established structure of church authority as revealed in the Bible as well. And how long have they been claiming this authority? Well, somewhere between today and 2,000 years ago.

Who do you think has had the time to sort out the issues?

This was one of the biggest eye openers for me. The Reformation began about 500 years ago. As SDAs we were taught that God provided more and more light to His people as time went on, which is why there are so many Protestant churches. As more light was revealed and more people believed the truth of the Bible, they moved on and formed new churches. The SDA church believes and teaches that it is the Remnant Church before the Second Coming of Jesus. And because of that, I suppose the Reformation has ended. And yet the SDA church and other Protestant churches are dealing with issues, which have been dealt with long long ago. These Protestant church systems are becoming catholic in nature as they try to address issues, bring an end to the Reformation, and thus end still further exodus from their denominations.

Well said, Patrick. Well said!

Outstanding post, there. It’s interesting that as churches move further and further away from the RCC, in many ways they must become images of the RCC in order to survive as one communal body. Like the church but lacking its authority and special graces.

I am grateful to you all for your responses. I will provide a link to your comments to my friend.

After my initial post I found a vast number of former threads and posts on SDA. I will encourage my friend to join the Forum and prayerfully consider what he finds here. We should all recall that God is faithful to complete a work begun in us. It may take sometime but I know God will provide the grace and the light that leads him home.👍
