Hello My name is Mark,

I am a 16 year old gay boy, that hasn’t come out of the closet yet. I’m afraid if I do, no one will accept me for who i am… including my friends and family. Will Jesus and God Accept me? Is being gay a sin? Am I Going To hell?

Please Help… Im Scared…

Being gay is not a sin. Being gay does not automatically mean you’re going to hell. Friends and family can be troublesome, but I guarantee you God accepts you as you are. He will ask you to do your best to lead a chaste life, and if you let Him, He will give you strength you never knew you had. But if you fall and fail, please be assured that you can pick yourself right back up, go to confession, and be assured of God’s love and mercy for you.

We are all sinners, regardless of sexual orientation and all of us are in need of God’s forgiveness and mercy. The Good News is that He gives His forgiveness and mercy to those who ask for it with a contrite heart.
 
Remain celibate and do not act on your disordered passions and you will be perfectly fine in the eyes of God.

Poperville, I think that OraLabora has done their usual bang up job of knocking out a great answer to your question… so I’d like to take on a different tack.

I note you say “Will Jesus and God accept me?” and I emphasize the conflation of two very different things here. To wit: you are NOT your sexuality. Your sexuality is a trait you possess, not who you are. You are not “I’m attracted to men”, being attracted to men is a trait ABOUT you. When I think about who I am, the fact that I’m attracted to women never comes up.

Like almost any trait, human sexuality can be used to do good, but it is also an avenue for our conscupience (propensity to sin) to prey upon us. ALL people in all times have suffered temptation to do things contrary to their human nature (goodness) to fulfill conscupience in exercising certain traits (and human sexuality is a big one). But the first step to piety is realizing that who you are is NOT based on a trait and that as a person you are firmly in control of your will.

Please don’t confuse what I’m saying here… I’m not talking mumbo-jumbo about “treatments for being gay” that can supposedly make people heterosexual. What I am saying is that the first step towards righteousness is realizing who and what you actually are (independent of traits) and then realizing that you are radically in control of your own impulses regarding acting on those traits (and self-reflection and impulse control is what makes us uniquely human). You are made lovingly by God, and have all the same potential for righteousness as any other person… that’s powerful, seize on it and take responsibility for your life!

Based on the posts above I think the forum has accepted you.

You may not believe it at sixteen but you are more than your sexual attractions.

You are created in the image and likeness of God. You are in the world for a reason. Your job is to find your vocation and live it.👍
 
Actaeon and Triumphguy, great points; we are whole people, sexuality is an attribute, not the definition of a person.
 
Please contact a local priest and seek out personal IRL direction. If you don’t want to speak to your parish priest, contact the diocese or go to a neighboring parish. CAF is wonderful, but direction from a priest who knows you personally and knows your situation is 1000 times more helpful than anything we can say here.
