What are the other books he wanted out?
Jude, James, Hebrews, and Revelation… as far as the New Testament goes.

geocities.com/aprofaith/bible.htm

i found this when I did a quick word search

from the site…
From the Old Testament he removed the Books of Judith, Tobit, 1 Maccabees 2 Maccabees, Wisdom, Ecclesiasticus and Baruch, as well as Esther and part of the Book of Daniel.

From the New Testament he removed the Books of Hebrews, James, Jude, and Revelation.

This is true. And it is a lot of what I am facing. Luther did the same thing that Kyle is doing. There are sections of the Bible that do not line up with his beliefs, so he wants to remove those sections. This is heresy in my opinion…I mean, why not rip out the ten commandments as well so that we can all go kill someone whenever we want?

The idea is insane to me, but that is what I am dealing with here.

I’ve associated with Fundamentalism in depth for thirty years and I’ve never heard of one who rejected any of the 66 books in the Protestant canon. Sounds like this dude is a piece of work all his own.

If he really twists and butchers your Bible verses, he’s beyond reason. Offering him a book or preparing apologetic answers sounds like a fool’s errand to me.

What’s that famous quote? …something about not trying to reason with a pig because it doesn’t work and it annoys the pig? I think that that insight would be applicable here.

That does make things interesting. The problem is that I have GOT to reach this guy on some level. Rome was not built in a day, and I am not going to tear down the walls of hate in a day either. Still, I need to reach him if I can do so.

Here is the thing, and I have witnessed this over and over: People have strong beliefs, and they need support for them. In order to get it, they go to the Bible, but they polute it. Rather than dealing with what it actually says, they interpret it on their own so that it supports their view. This happens over and over. And, it seems to be most prevelent in the Fundamentalist /Evangelical crowd. Not sure why that is, but I think that it may have to do with the fact that they are teaching people to dislike the Catholic Church. I have been to many services of this nature, as I was raised in them. I converted last year, and part of the reason for the conversion was that I could no longer abide my chruch teaching hate.

I think that this is the rhetoric that her father has fallen victim to.

You should get a copy of Karl Keating’s CATHOLICISM AND FUNDAMENTALISM, which is an introduction to apologetics.

Keating tells you what to argue and how to argue and what to avoid. There are other references in the book.

Also consider the website of Catholic Apologetics International and the resources of this website for Catholic Answers. Your nemesis ought to be willing to give you time to research your answers.

And, if you prove a point, stop there. agree to disagree. There’s no point in beating each other up further. You just disagree, OK?

I suggest this…go to a pastor, a non-Catholic pastor and explain your situation. Most pastors, no matter how anti- or un-Catholic they are, will not in any way, shape or form condone taking out any parts of the Bible. At the very least he might be interested in talking to your girlfriend’s father about this. On the flip side your gf’s dad might not be so, um…defensive when talking to a non-Catholic pastor. Then maybe, you guys can go from there.
