Hi everyone. I can’t seem to stay out of a state of mortal sin. Like I’ll go to confession and then I’ll come home and I’ll decide not to be Catholic anymore and will fall in to a state of mortal sin again. I don’t know what to do about this. It has become such a severe problem for me that I can’t even stay out of mortal sin for one day. Please help! 😦

Hi Holly,

I imagine the borderline personality disorder is a big factor here. It’s possible that you may not be in mortal sin due to diminished capacity as a result of your illness, but that is something you’ll need to discuss with a priest.

The Sacraments and prayer is your first line of defense. On our own we cannot avoid sin, which is why we need to pray daily for help. Have you considered the Sacrament of Annointing of the Sick?

In addition to prayer, I would make sure to follow the advice of your doctors and take medication as prescribed. If you are doing that and it is not helping, then let your doctor know. If you’re not already in counseling, you might consider going to discuss ways you can manage the impulse to change religions constantly.

Remember that God loves you very much and this cross of BPD that you bear will work for your good in the long run (see Romans 8:28). When we suffer, we are being perfected.

Also remember that God will not allow you to be tested beyond your strength, and He will give you the grace to overcome temptations (1 Corinthians 10:13).

God bless you Beckycmarie for your perfect post.
In my prayers, Holly.

I agree that if these changes of heart are due to your illness, and I suspect they probably are, your culpability is diminished. But you need to bring up the issue with your priest, explain your situation and ask his advice on what to do when these frequent “conversions” to and from Catholicism occur, and when/how often they need to be confessed considering your condition. Your priest is your spiritual father and he is there precisely to help you and offer you guidance, like any father would. Let him do his job and like a good daughter, trust and heed his advice for you. It would probably be best to make an appointment with him specifically for this purpose if you can. God bless you!

You have great advice here. So you don’t get scruples I would just add that if you do exactly as the priest tells you then even if he made a mistake you would have absolutely no guilt. He can if he’s negligent which I’m sure he won’t be but not you. trust the priest totally and you’ll always be on sure ground. God bless:thumbsup: 🙂

every catholic is unique and individual and a great asset for the church of christ, and thats where the devil comes in all he wants is to take sheep out of the flock of christ my advice is to acknowledge what is your sin and acknowledge when it is you sin realize what your doing and say a prayer to st. micheal he can be a real help 👍

Ask God for a spiritual director, and see if a priest can direct you in your spiritual life. And know that God will be speaking to you through the priest, so be sure to listen to him. (I have a problem of sin as well and I have found having a spiritual director really helps)
