I went to confession Saturday so I would be ready to receive Communion at midnight mass. A friend called and wanted to visit today and I have so much going on, I told him no. He pressed me for an explanation, and I lied and said I was expecting company.
I realize this is a lie and any lie is a sin, but is this venial or mortal? Should I not receive?
Thank you!

Mark it off as a poor choice and a venial matter. You should have informed this person that you were too busy to visit. I doubt that your lie was a grave matter…which is one of the conditions of Mortal sin.

If I may ask, what is your reason for being busy? You certainly could have used that as an excuse. If you were cleaning for visiting relatives then technically you didn’t lie.

it was not even a lie, you were expecting company–yourself and your own thoughts–he had no right to press you for an explanation of your time, and you did not owe him any explanation, so you didn’t lie, because you did not withhold info he has a right to have.

We are wrapping, cooking, cleaning, (for visitors, but not the ones I said were coming) bathing children, Rosary, advent story, other prayers, getting ready for Midnight Mass (no idea what anyone will wear) and taking care of an elderly relative. The person I lied to has not been in much contact of late and has a tendency to pop over with little notice and not much regard for what everybody else is doing. Also, the person I lied to has a crush on my spouse and makes things uncomfortable for us when both are present. I told the truth initially, but when pressed it just came out that a relative (who’s visit I knew this person wouldn’t intrude on) was coming over. I didn’t plan it …it just slipped out and now I feel terrible because I just went to confession and I really wanted to receive tonight.

Serious matter? Were there serious consequences because of your actions? Clearly thought out and intentional? You clearly intended to lie to this person or were you pressed into it by the circumstances?

If this person is not close to you then they are an intruder. You need to put a kibosh on this situation. Make it clear to your spouse that he/she NEEDS to intitiate the KIBOSH.

You said the person pressed AND that they have a crush on your spouse…THIS PERSON IS AN INTRUDER.

You did not lie. You were expecting the company of Jesus in the Mass.

As a New Englander, I was brought up to believe that 99% of the world’s problems could be resolved if people just minded their own gosh dern business. You owed him no explanation. None. And intruder personalities like that one not handle the truth well. Please believe the poster who said that you were expecting the company of Jesus in the Mass. Jesus would understand.
