Call it poor planning, but this weekend I am leading a Bible study on the Gospel reading (Mark 12:38-44) which contains the story of the “widow’s mite”. I wanted to show the group what a widows mite looked like, so I thought I could pick up a pack of those replica coins I’ve seen at Walmart and a local used bookstore. To my consternation, they don’t carry them any more! The only place I’ve seen them is on-line, like here:

christianbook.com/Christian/Books/product?item_no=818191&netp_id=432527&event=ESRCN&item_code=WW

But now there is no time to order them. Stupid, stupid, stupid! :banghead:

Anyway, is there anyone in the greater Phoenix area that knows for a fact where I can run over and pick these up, either today or tomorrow? ANY help would be appreciated! :tiphat:

Did you know that you can buy a real Widow’s Mite for $10-20? I would try calling local coin dealers; Phoenix has a LOT of them and I’d think it very likely SOMEONE would have it. They’re pretty common. ShopNBC.com also sells them for around $20, in a protective sleeve.

Thanks for the response. Yes, I did know that, but I think I’d rather be able to find the replica packs, a) because they are cheaper. I only do this occasionally as a volunteer and I don’t really have a budget for real coins, and b) I’m not the most organized person in the world, and I’d just end up losing something that small. :o

Thanks for the (name removed by moderator)ut, though.🙂 (Do you think coin shops might sell replicas?)

It is estimated that over 50% of ancient coins on the market are actually fakes. The real ones on the market almost always come through the black market, having been stolen and smuggled out in order to bypass very strict laws concerning the deportation of ancient artifacts. Buying them only increases the illegal sale of stolen antiquities. Large scale coin dealers typically do have the replicas of Roman and Greek coins, but I’m not sure if they will have the specific type that you want.

Perhaps you can find a local coin dealer who might be willing to loan you the coin you need for the day in exchange for mentioning his shop at your meeting. Who knows, maybe the coin dealer is a fallen-away Catholic whose interest in his faith will be sparked by your interaction.

😃 I never thought of that. If worse comes to worst, maybe I’ll resort to that. Thanks.

I’d still like to find those replicas, though.
