In the Sacristy, there is a fixture that resembles a sink, the pupose of which is to properly dispose of holy water, host fragments, etc.

Anyone know the name of the fixture ?

I remember from my altar serving days. It’s called a sacrarium, sometimes I heard it referred to as a piscina. It does just what you said, to make sure none of the Body or Blood of Christ goes in the sewers, but directly into the ground. Only the holy vessels were cleaned in there. I think old holy water and oil also went in there, I’m not too sure. Anyone else to elaborate?

I’m going to look it up now, I Believe, but I believe (ha ha) it’s called the ‘Sacrarium.’ going to new advent now…

‘Sacrarium’ or ‘piscina.’

Ok, thanks 🙂

Sacrarium is the name I had heard before.

Hi maurin, yes, that’s the name I was looking for. You and matt posted about the same time.🙂

Over on Clare’s site, someone asked a question about the way a priest ordered a host disposed of after Mass. He supposedly gave it to an EMHC, who placed it in a potted plant’s soil :mad:

Anyhow, the first thing I thought of was why in the world didn’t he use a sacrarium ? 🤷

It’s a sacrarium and is drains directly to the ground. Never heard it called a piscina, a Spanish word that can mean swimming pool or fish pond.

**I presume this was a host that had either fallen to the ground or somehow corrupted.

FIRST you dissolve it in water, then pour it into the piscina.**

HOWEVER::
*Note that the Precious Blood is never to be poured down the sacrarium but MUST be consumed. *
Chalices and other sacred vwessels, that have come into sontact with the Sacred Species, may be cleaned in the sacrarium and linens that have had the precious Blood spilled on them can be soaked and the water they were soaked in is to be poured down that sink. Also hosts are to be disolved in water first then poured down the sacrarium.

In this case it comes from the Latin word Piscina.
