(Please Note: This uploaded content is no longer available.) Hello everyone, I’m In a bit of a dilemma I’m going to a funeral for a Filipino family member and they want me to break a blessed rosary that will be placed in the family members hands inside the casket isn’t intentional distraction of a Sacramental a grave sin and grounds for excommunication? I made this rosary for my Aunt. And had it blessed.

There is some Filipino believe that breaking the rosary that’s to be placed in the dead person‘s hands breaks a curse stopping other people from dying soon after.

Exactly, I’m Italian and married to a Filipino. To me this is a horrible thing to do.

I was just asked to because I’m preparing the body for viewing. But I don’t agree with this me doing it or anyone else for that matter. And the fact that I made the rosary for her. I don’t want to hurt anyone’s feelings.

That’s what I’m thinking, I text my priest I’m just waiting to hear back from him.

sounds rather superstitous to me. As far as I know it is a sin to treat sacramentals with such disrespect. As far as excommunication goes, it’s my opinion that that wouldn’t be grounds for excommunication as that is reserved for grave matters.

edited to add that once I went to a funeral of a filipino person and they all threw flowers onto the casket. I really didn’t want to as I knew it was wrong, but did so as not to upset the family. My priest who also was their priest at the funeral when I asked him about it later told me that is not part of the Catholic funeral rite/faith.

I’m Wondering if distraction of a Sacramental is a grave sin?

Probably depends on the intent.

This just sounds like superstition mixed with ignorance. Best to set everything straight.

That’s what I’ve always done. I just don’t want any part of it

That’s just superstitious to me, the rosary is for God, not for curses of death, tell them the rosary is a sacred object, it’s not meant to be broken just to stop the curses of death, it’s very superstitious, death is just natural because we are mortal beings, of course death can be unnatural if the deceased was cursed because it’s intended not natural, if someone cursed the deceased person and the only antidote is breaking the rosary, then, that’s the time you’ll consult a priest to ask God permission to break His sacred object

I would refuse to break the rosary as well. I would calmly tell them that it is superstition to think that way.

They are thinking wrongly and can use some correction from the priest.

That is superstition… simply dismiss the belief

However, I won’t worry too much about breaking the rosary as the rosaryis simply a material, inanimate item

Will the broken part be visible? Just put them in her hands unbroken. Let them think whatever they want. If they ask if you broke them, be honest and say no, and remind them it is against your religion to do so. And then just don’t discuss it any further.

“breaking” a rosary is not a sin, I clean and repair rosaries and often have to break them in order to do this. The sin is the superstition.

It’s a sacrilege to break a sacred object of God, just like receiving Jesus in communion while not in a state of grace, it’s like a slap to Jesus on the face because mortal sin totally breaks your relationship with God unlike venial sin that partially breaks your relationship with God, mortal sin is like refusing the free gift of salvation of God, and it means, you’re like slapping Jesus to leave your soul because the Bible says the wisdom of God, which is Jesus, does not come in a stained soul. In order to know if it’s a mortal sin are the following:
•Doing it with all your will and freedom
•Doing it while fully aware and realizing that it’s evil in the sight of God
•Doing it with desirous intention

If there’s a thing missing in the list, then it means it’s a venial sin

This is superstitious nonsense and you should NOT do what they want you to do.

I live in the Philippines and have been to plenty (sadly) funerals here and every time a Rosary was placed in the hands of the deceased it was NOT broken.
