Hey Folks,

I am in the midst of RCIA and converting to Catholicism from my Lutheran/Protestant background and I’ve read This is the Faith by Canon Francis Ripley and Rome Sweet Home by Scott and Kimberly Hahn. These two books have been absolutely FANTASTIC and have really given me a hunger to know as much about Roman Catholicism as possible.

I went to my first Tridentine Mass today and though I got lost about half way through, I loved the service and the beauty, reverence and heritage that it displayed. If this is what being Catholic feels like and the way it depicts God and the ways in which it allows me to see Him, then sign me up 👍

However, I am the kind of person that loves to immerse himself in a topic when he gets into it, but I find that I don’t know where else to go. I’m looking for books about theology and philosophy regarding the Church, but I would also like works in the area of apologetics, the defense of the faith.

It is so surreal to be so excited about becoming a Catholic considering that less than a year ago I never considered joining and in some ways looked down at my nose at Catholics 😦 Your faith and Church is so rich, lovely, reverent and majestic that I desire and hope that one day I will be able to call it MY Church.

I would greatly appreciate any titles or authors you folks could send my way. Lastly, I would also love prayers and thoughts you on my behalf that I continue down this path and that the doctrine and teachings of the Lord and His Apostles would always be with me. Thanks for the suggestions and thoughts folks!

Hi Blue,

Very excited for you in your journey to the Catholic Church!
You can start right here in CAF Shops if you haven’t already. There are several books in apologetics and one of my favs (not in apologetics) is The Fathers Know Best: Your Essential Guide to the Teachings of the Early Church also sold here at CAF Shops.
Best of luck to you and I will be praying for you.

The Church is Christ’s Body. No Catholic can say that the Church is “Mine” nor can you say that the Church is not yet yours. You become a member of Christ’s body through baptism to be sure but you already have the baptism of desire. Christ freely gives his body to everyone who desires it. We are all beggars and so no one group of people can lay claim.

Welcome home. 👍

If you listen to Scott Hahn’s CD about his conversion, at the end of his talk he recommends three books which he states are must reading for any Catholic. I agree.

  1. *]Theology for Beginners by F.J. Sheed.
*]Catholicism vs Fundamentalism by Karl Keating (founder of this website)
*]**Radio Replies **by Frs Rumble and Carty

Theology for Beginners is one of my go-to books.

Chapter 18 of Theology for Beginners is online at ewtn.com/library/ANSWERS/SHEEDEUC.HTM

Radio Replies is a three book set arranged by topic. As the title implies, it is a compliation of questions received by Fathers Rumble and Carty on their radio show which I believe ran in the 50’s.

Welcome home!

There is so much good material out there that it’s hard to narrow it down!

To prepare to do apologetics I suggest you listen to Catholic Answers Live faithfully. Just hearing the same arguments, and corresponding apologia over and over and from different angles will work it into your head so you don’t ever forget!

I’m afraid I am woefully ignorant to the Extraordinary form of the Mass, but I have great respect for it and only wish I could be in a schola cantorum somewhere.

Develop your love for the Mass, and read your catechism and you will be off to a great start!

God Bless

One of my favorite books that I use a lot, both for apologetics, and just for general go to resource is Catholic Doctrine in Scripture by Gregory Oatis. I converted from Southern Baptist, and this book helped a lot because all my old friends and family attacked like rabid dogs . . . and it was comforting to have scripture references for ALL the Catholic Doctrine. They quickly quit attacking, and even grew to admire my new faith.

btw Welcome Home! 🙂

Welcome to the journey home. You will have some hurdles to jump, but well worth it.

There is a huge amount to learn. Check out my group listed in my signature, it has many threads with lots of good materials online, books and more.

There are so many good authors out there and books . Scott Haun has written many books here is two can be very helpful to you: .::" Rome Sweet Home " is a book about his journey to the Catholic church . He was a protestant minister very anti catholic at one point ,he read a book about contraception (written by a catholic) and that started his journey to the Catholic church .“Mary Queen of Heaven” is about Mary and how to explain her role in scripture and in the faith . Another great author is Patrick Madrid who wrote number good books here is a couple : "Where is that in the Bible “,Where is that in Tradition” both of them link Catholic traditions and practices to Scripture . Patrick Madrid is also the radio show host “Open Line” on EWTN Catholic radio channel 1300 . He is the host on Thursdays .Father Mitch Paqua is the host for Wed . Father Mitch has done wonders for teaching the faith . You can see him on several debates on youtube . "Open Line " starts at 3pm-5pm Mon, Wed and Thur, John Martinoni is also a host and he is on Mondays . People can call in to debate the hosts or ask questions protestants are all welcome to challenge them.It will do wonders for you . Hope I was some help to you. Welcome home .
