for me–a 42 year old out of shape mom.

I’m not coordinated at all. I like calisthenics and wt training, but not too much bouncing around. One of my friends is using power90 and raves about it, but I’m not sure what it is exactly.

any suggestions?

Power 90 is a diet and extreme exercise program that is all the rage right now. It seems to be spread by pyramid too - you do it yourself, and then you market it through your own experience. I would not advise anyone to do this kind of extreme program.

I know Zumba is also all the rage, it’s more like dancing than “bouncing around.” I’m not coordinated enough to do that sort of thing myself.

There are DVDs by Leslie Sansone that are basically marching in place, that’s the easiest thing I can think of, that takes NO equipment and that anyone can do, regardless of the shape you are in.

I second the Leslie Sansone dvds! They are great for just starting out and don’t think that because you are walking in place at home that you can’t get a work out. When I started them, I really got tired! Eventually, you may find that you get bored by the same thing, but by then you may be ready to move up to something challenging. I recently got one of the Biggest Loser workout dvds. BOB! Will let you know how I like it! 👍

I like Total Body Sculpt with Gilad off Discovery Fit and Health channel. When I was looking for something else, I tried some stuff from the library but didn’t really like it as much as I like Gilad. Could you try different stuff from the library so you aren’t out any money if you don’t like what it entails?

Good luck in your search!

I suggest Kettlebell Workouts! 😃
There must be some Kettlebell excersise dvds out there…

There are a series of workout videos…8 minute Abs, 8 minute buns, 8 minute arms.

They are pretty easy and quick…you just have to work them in everyday.

You can also do The Biggest Loser Workout videos and some of Jillian Michaels videos. They are pretty good too.

Zumba is fun if you like dancing but if you feel silly doing it then you won’t be motivated.

Pilates are a great core workout…and, unlike Yoga, I don’t believe it has any religious or spiritual implications that contradict with the Church’s teachings.

What I wouldn’t do is fall into the hype of P90x or Insanity…those workouts are VERY difficult and you will quit within the first 5 or 10 minutes.
I tried doing them after coming out of basic training, while in the best shape of my life, and they were super tough for me.

One other suggestion…I don’t know if you have kiddos that have a Wii or XBox or if you have a subscription to Netflix…but you can get lots of workout videos either sent to you or on stream. We’ve got it in our family and I used some of the workout videos and they are quite good…good luck!

I personally love Pilates. My mom and I do it together all the time when I’m not pregnant. She’s in her mid fifties, and she can keep up just fine. Then just do walking for cardio and you’ve got a full workout regime going on. 👍 Pilates always leaves me feeling refreshed and energized rather than worn out and tired.

You have 2 different programs confused here. You’re thinking of P90X. Power 90 is made by the same company but is a lot less intense and was the predecessor to P90X (Power 90 Extreme). I actually used Power 90 a couple of years ago and lost close to 80 pounds. With Power 90 you alternate a cardio routine and a weight lifting routine every other day. They give you 4 routines on the DVDs. You get two lower impact workouts to start with so you can build up to the second level routines that are a little more demanding. The program also includes a guidebook and a recipe booklet to help you eat healthier. The only thing you need equipment wise is a couple of handweights. I would recommend Power 90 to anyone. I did try to do P90X after completing Power 90 but I found that too intense and gave up on it after about a week and a half. However, it has worked for quite a few people.

Thanks for the clarification, I didn’t know there were 2 programs. Were you able to keep the weight off once you lost it?

My wife did P90X and one of the biggest loser dvd’s last year and got back down to her pre pregnancy weight pretty quick. If you want to do one that’s not too hard, try the biggest loser. If you are up for a challenge, go P90X. She didn’t have too much trouble with either one.

Blogilates - check out free POP pilates from Cassey Ho, an awesome Pilates instructor fr CA. I’m in luv with her free videos! I also like the Tony Horton 10 minute DVDs and combining exercises - you will sweat, easy to follow, and effective. I also use the Lose It app on my iPhone to track calories. Lost several inches in 4 weeks already - more importantly, I have more energy and feel like I’m treating my body like I should, with respect and love. 😉

I love pilates and so do my 50 year old knees. I used to run but now I walk fast. Lesley Sansone and Kathy Smith have DVD’s with non dance routines. Kathy Voight was good also. I can’t do complicated moves and end up making up my own or getting frustrated and stopping. Theirs have been good.
I also don’t like Jillians cardio (lots of squats/knee moves) but her “No more trouble zones” has lots of floor work and you can pick what body part. Some were from the “jane fonda” days and many were new and she moves at a quick pace so light cardio also.
collagevideo.com is good to get a glimpse at the dvd’s before you buy.

Ditto the above. Stick with Power 90. P90x is NOT for out-of-shape people. Attempting an advanced routine like that will simply discourage people.

I’ve not some heavy people that have started off by changing their diet and just walking for exercise. One of my friends went from 325 to 190 lbs just by doing this; he stopped eating garbage and walked an hour during lunch break.

I wish I could find a good spinning video. I finally found a used bike that I could afford, I have really good music, but it’s been so long since I was in a class that I have forgotten some of the routines we used to do. A lot of the videos seem to be filmed as if you were riding outdoors, in a cycling party, and I am not interested in pretending that I am actually going somewhere! I would like a video that shows a class, with an instructor that doesn’t blab the whole time, and an option to mute the sound and just use my own music. I’m not too picky, am I?? LOL Oh, and not a class with a whole bunch of idiots dressed in spandex pretending they are Lance Armstrong. That’s so pathetic. You’re on a stationary bike in a gym, not in the Pyrenees on a road cycle. Loser.

That website is great! Thanks for posting about it!

A lot of it, yes. I’ve put some back on but that’s due to my own laziness. I need to get back to a regular workout schedule.

I never do dvd’s anymore (thanks to elliptical/treadmill) but years ago I used to love my “Buns of Steel” workouts, lol! 😃 Not sure if they make them anymore? They sure did work though!

Yes, thanks for that website! They don’t list spinning per se but they do have spinning videos under “Stationary bike.” (“Spinning” may be a trademarked name by the guy who started the whole thing.)

And the first video up shows just about what I need - the class is even using the same model/brand of bike I have! Here’s a live link for anyone else who is interested.

I totally agree! Gilad’s Body Sculpt is the BEST! Good warm-ups, exercises for every part of your body and what I really like is he focuses on form and explains exactly what you should be doing to avoid injury and get the most out of the workout. It’s just good, classic exercising that really works.

I’ve been doing his Body Sculpt for almost two years now, 4 days a week. (just be sure you get “Body Sculpt” and not “Bodies in Motion” - the latter is aerobics from the 80’s and you have to put up with watching 80’s hair and leg warmers for 30 minutes and some hokey props once in awhile. :))
